Larry Jon Wilson: Canoochee Revisit/Ohoopee River Bottomland

- Larry Jon Wilson, a singer/songwriter somewhere between Tony Joe White and Jim Croce, cut four LPs in the second half of the 1970s, none of which sold many copies (New Beginnings, Let Me Sing My Song To You, Loose Change, Sojourner). It's hard to understand why, because he's simply great.
Luckily enough director James Szalapski filmed him doing the self-penned "Ohoopee River Bottomland" in a recording studio in 1975 for his movie "Heartworn Highways", a must-have for any fan of the mid-seventies new country scene. Other performances include singer/songwriters Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Johny Hiatt, David Allan Coe, a very young Steve Earle, Charlie Daniel Band and Barefoot Jerry with "Two Mile Hike", yet another hard to get piece of great music. The movie is available on a 2003 dvd in an extended version.
Larry Jon Wilson still performs occasionally and cut two great songs for the album "The Country Soul Revue - Testifying", produced by Dan Penn.
PS: Somehow the sound wasn't on the clip, so I edited it from the soundtrack.
Update: The new cd "Larry Jon Wilson" was released on 1965 Records in July 2008.
James Endeacott, proprietor of eclectic record label 1965: We've just signed a guy who's 70 years old -- Larry John Wilson -- who was mates with Kris Kristofferson in the '70s. He's not made a record in 28 years and he's just made one for us, just him and a guitar recorded in a room overlooking a beach in Florida, and it's heartbreaking.

Just finished Heartworn Highways and discovered this man for the first time in my 63 years!! I won't be able to get enough...he should have been another Waylon!!!
Gonna miss you. Larry Jon. I cannot begin to express how much your music has enriched my life or how much of an adventure it has been to find your music. Rest in Peace, Larry Jon. You will be missed.
I still remember his first Frank Brown Songwriter's Festival in 89... In 90... He brought Shawn Mullins and Matthew Kahler down with him... We were IMMEDIATELY drawn to each other and were connected for life as he paid me one of the kindest and warmest compliments I've ever gotten about my mixing and recording style when it came to matching the tones of that guitar to that rich Baritone voice and the myriad of subtle enrichments I applied... about halfway through his second song... He looked back at me across that board and stopped playin' for a minute to say " Son, this is so strange, and so strangely warm, comfortable, and AMAZING... Nobody has EVER gotten this sound LIVE before... And this damned FAST!!" And he played on... Occasionally, Shootin' me a knowing glance and a smile of approval when he'd hear my effect of choice sync up with his tempo... Then we started hangin' out away from the venue and realized we were pretty much Spiritual Twins save bein' 20 years apart in age... I dunno where he kept that wondrous heart and soul but even THAT big body couldn't house them... And just when I get a handle on the Memories he and I made and slow their descent down my face... I happen to work with his Son, Tyler... And immediately realize that he had adopted Larry Jon's playin' style and started playin' Daddy's Music... My spirit went into orbit and i wept just as hard as I did at my old Brethren's passing... Thank all of you for sharing and appreciating the amazing phenomenon that was... and still is... Larry Jon Wilson ... May the Great Spirit bless each and every step and breath each of y'all take and every dream Y'all dream... Much Love from Ol Big AndY's Camp to yours..... Peace Y'all%
How is he not well known. What a talent !

Loved Heartworn Highways, it changed my life, still changing it! You gotta see it if you haven't! Larry Jon really rocked it! Glad to know he's still doin' it!!!
He's gone now but we can still hear his music.
"country-funky"... I like it !
you can see/hear his pure guitar riffin' in heartworn highway, he's fantastic!
any other songs with this riff? i feel like Stepenwolf - The Pusher almost shares it, and i think there's another "hippie song" from the 60s with this riff
Every summer I would go to church camp in Adrian, Ga. The campgound was right on the 'Hoopie and is literally "low-rent land turned to sand." We had the hand-fans to beat the heat and gnats. Been a Larry Jon fan since 1976.
Trudy Phillips grandson, she was my mother's friend and a good Old Line Primitive Baptist so I know he came from a wonderful family. The Churches he mentioned in the first song was all in the Original Upper Chanoochee Primitive Baptist Association, all still serving the Lord Jesus Christ, most all over 200 years. John Cowart, Hebron Church
This is fantasic music by a unique artist who is vastly under rated. From One musician to another you are at the top of the tree. Wonderful stuff and I love it. Mike Reed
for years been a big fan of Barefoot Jerry's

You can get a CD called New Beginnings/Let me sing my song to you ( a compilation of two of his albums from the 70's) from the UK if you're interested. It'll take some searching online, but worth it.

lol, bxx
Wow Brent Maher sure looks young there.
jeezus, man
Pardon me- But for the past 20 years the only Larry Jon I could get was from China, Japan, Italy or other non-US sources!! Now it seems he's everywhere, and then some. I have always admired LJW's musical integrity, but from where I am, it's sad of you(have to be, so-called fans/friends) to come out of the musical woodwork and immediately try to .... !!
What studio was this filmed at?
Why did LJ quit music for 28 years???
