Hi Michelle! I can't believe it's been a year already! Congratulations! And thank you! Thank you for all of your very hard work in planning, recording, and editing your videos. Not to mention the physical labor of creating the gardens to begin with! Speaking of the labor, I hope you're going to have strong assistance with digging out the beds, repairing, and filling them again; also with new beds. Love the categorized notes! I'm a nerd that way too, and I so appreciate it in others! Yours made for great flow in this video! Mark does a good job teaching us about his raised beds, but nobody can hold a candle to your thorough, clear, detailed approach! Have a great week! Good health and happiness to you and yours!
I have 5 Birdies Raised Beds and a bunch of feral neighborhood cats in South Florida. To deter the cats, I use free used coffee grounds from Starbucks sprinkled over the top of my mulch. It has kept the cats from sleeping in my beds OR using it as a litter box.
Michelle, I was moderating for You Can't Eat the Grass tonight, and in the chat was Flicker Hill Homestead. I mentioned that you gave them a very nice shout-out in this video. They said they thing you're great, and your video is in their queue, so they'll be watching. I thought it might make you smile to know!
Thank you for the video I found your channel as I was trying to decide on raised beds for my small lot. I really appreciate the info provided and I am so excited to expand my garden with Vego beds.
I have both beds as well and live in Michigan where I get 5-6 months of snow and then get flooded for weeks in the spring. No rust or issues with my beds either.
@@michelleinthemeadow it’s a bummer but I love gardening so I make it work. If we ever move I’ll be making sure w get some extra frost free days though 😂
This is the best review/s on the beds I have come across. I have 8 birdies beds and am happy except for the trimmings on the rim. I see they are selling extras, but for the cost am not buying anymore. You have done a terrific job describing both beds, and it's time for them to send you out some out some new products for review. My opinion. Thanks Michelle, you have done a great job!
Thanks once again for a great video! I would like to share that we placed our two Birdies' Beds with grass immediately surrounding the base of the bed. We have had zero wear and tear from the string trimmer after a year. I didn't think about the possibility of damage when we installed the beds, but will keep an eye on it.
Regarding the screws rusting: I got two Birdies beds in June of '22. For various reasons, I never got around to constructing them. They sat outside next to the garden, getting soaked when the lawn was watered and sitting through all the unusually high rainfall we had in NorCal last winter. I just this month put the beds together, 11 maths later. The cardboard boxes were trashed and the bags holding the screws, etc. were full of water. The screws were fine, not a speck of rust.
Thank you for your reviews and occasional updates. I appreciate how clear your explanations are. I would love to know how the screws compare inside the bed, beneath the soil, since they stay pretty moist and arguably take more abuse.
I wouldn't worry about toxicity leeching either...however, keep in mind, just because the USDA says it's safe....does not mean that it's actually safe.
Thanks for doing the comparison videos! How far apart are the beds? If you knew you were going to put the cattle panel arch between them would you change how far apart they are?
Great question. And now that you've asked, I'll be more aware in the future. If I had known, I would have made them 4 feet apart. This is barely 3 feet. Not quite enough.
it does not stop burmuda grass-- the weed fabric-ask me how i know as my yard with the fabric is covered in grass- was sick and could not keep up with it all
Can I put the garden fabric under the bed? I plan on using the 3.5' x 6.5' and 2' x 8' vego one and I want to plant things like strawberries and stuff like that, things that don't care that they're growing on a box on rocks. lol I also want to denture critters since like... We have rabbits, birds, and squirrels.
That is a great question. I would imagine that you can put them on top of a weed fabric.Yes but you may not get the benefits of Microbes and earthworms crawling up into your bed over time. Of course you could always add earthworms to the bed later yourself.
I haven't tried that brand. Our dirt in my location is a bit more clay than sand, likely due to our high water table and proximity to woodlands and creek.

Unless you put a cage over your beds, it will be tough to keep the Racoons out. I've witnessed a racoon climb into an open dumpster that the opening was 6 feet off the ground.
In earthboxes, when emptying, ants are thriving bigtime in the moist environment, so I see ants more in moist environments vs dry. Will have to pay attention to this in the other gardens and see if both fit the ant situation.

Thank you. Cool to know that. Flicker Hill has a really huge setup - I'm envious.
I like the British green color available in the Vego beds, plus I like their many accessory options. I also like that they're a little bit taller.
Thank you, Queen Kitty. It is a nice color 😀 I agree they have more accessories, too.

Thank you for sharing, Cortney. That's great to know. Have you started planting out for the season?
@@michelleinthemeadow I just started about 2 weeks ago. I only have about 98 frost free days here so the garden season flies by but I love it!

Thank you for taking the time to put together these valuable monthly updates. The fencing idea for the bed's is brilliant! ❤🐝🦋

Thanks, Michelle, for another great video!

I would love it if you could try the birdie urban. I haven't seen any good info on it yet and I'm very curious how it ages!
Stay tuned because that video should be coming out within a few weeks. Thanks for asking!
Thanks for the update and answering questions.
Are these the only two products you have purchased from Both companies?
I have purchased other items from both sellers. Did you have other questions?
Great advice regarding ants
Thanks!

Ants prefer dry beds? Doh! That explains my losses over the years we were in droughts! Thank you!
You're welcome. 🤣
@@michelleinthemeadow I asked this question about ants. Thanks so much for addressing this.
You are welcome. Thanks for being a part of our community here. ❤️
Could you try the Vegega Trellis and see how it is? The cattle panel is way too unwieldy for me by myself.
Possibly next year, I'll need to look into it a more.
Did you ever try VEGEGA ones? Don't you have SAND as a base being in FL?
I haven't tried that brand. Our dirt in my location is a bit more clay than sand, likely due to our high water table and proximity to woodlands and creek.

Does anyone know how they hold up in below zero temps and snow/ice?

This is an excellent question
Iguanas in Aruba get pretty big, maybe 24+ inches
Thanks for sharing. That's pretty big. Wow.
Hedgehogs are ok, they are insectivores. They eat bugs and rarely burrow in the ground. They make nests in leaf litter and needles or in tall grass.
Thanks for sharing. It's not a critter we have around here. Do they root up dirt looking for bugs?

i have cats and they are my biggest problem cus the think my garden is a giant cat box trying to keep them out is a on going problem!!
I've been fortunate so far. I will be discussing some other options for keeping them out, too.
No WILD Hedgehogs live in North or South America. UK YES. Iguanas are mostly in SOUTH FL!! The cats feel safer higher up.
Thank you 😊
Vego garden is now having something self watering available
Thank you. I haven't tried those yet. I'll take a look. Happy Gardening 😊
Birdies are clearly superior. also not chinese.
Thanks for watching Richard. Happy Gardening. 😊
