    We just posted our update on building 4 birdies 8-1 beds as one large long bed, and leveling that 😀. Using stakes and string work best we have found. Good luck growing!!

      @@michelleinthemeadow we have a tunnel with 2 tall 8-1s on each side in the long and skinny formation (roughly 16ft long with 4 cattle panels). Then this short new mega bed is amazing at 27ft long and 44" wide. You need to make sure you think about the supports when doing multiple beds like this though, it takes some trial and error.

    You are so fortunate to have a wooded lot, and neighbors with same who share tree debris. I'm starting to realize that I can't afford to fill one of these beds, because I'd have to buy filler. And my back got excited at the prospect of a tractor to haul and dump soil! Omg I love cattle panel!!! So sorry you have to wear the sling for so long. This is a really good video! Very well done! Looking forward to watching your garden grow!

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  2 роки тому

      I am very fortunate to have a wooded lot. It was a big appeal for us moving to this location. I do keep an eye for resources that my neighbors leave on the curb, because it seems like there are always leaves and branches and things around. The tractor was a massive help I suspect that one tractor dump is the equivalent of 20 of my wagons and so that saved me about 80 trips or more with the wagon back and forth. I don't live in a neighborhood where I have to worry about an H O A, so the tractor grooves in my grass aren't troubling for me. In other neighborhoods that could be a problem. Thank you for watching the video and thanks for the good thoughts about my shoulder. Day-by-day I'll get stronger and get back to full me, meantime I'll keep on going as best I can.

    Regarding your rust on the metal in the edging: Dissimilar metals that are touching can generate galvanic corrosion. If you want to mitigate the corrosion, you can spot wrap the wire with 3M tape.

    I tell you what... that tractor is a great win. I'm on 1/4 acre property in a town full of lots the same size or smaller so I don't even have a neighbor who has one. Filling our massive Birdies 8-in-1 took over 2 cubic yards of fill. When the wheel barrow or garden cart can only move 6 cubic feet at a time... and these 40-year-old bones are doing the work. Ooof. Next time I'm renting a tractor, even if I have to drive an hour out to get it! :D
    Thanks again for sharing these videos. I hope to see your channel and content take off like an eagle - Best wishes!
    edit: Just read your About for your channel. Funny you are also on 1/4 acre lot.

      @michelleinthemeadow  2 роки тому

      You are welcome, yes I'm on a quarter acre and the soil was a hundred feet away from where I needed it. That would have taken me I am estimating 80 of my wagon loads to fill. Thanks for watching

    Wondering if you can invert the corners to create and inside bend, if you were connecting several kits together to make a unshape, with the 32 inch tall beds?

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  2 роки тому

      Interesting idea. In theory I guess you could, the one challenge I see would be from an aesthetic standpoint, the inside walls are painted white so you would have a different color on the outside Flicker Hill Homestead has created an extended bed system and bought extra bracing to make an ultra long bed. ua-cam.com/video/JbodeojLRZ8/v-deo.html

    I sure looked like there was gonna be too much shade where you filled the beds. I sure appreciate your experience. This way I don't have to try and re-invent the wheel when I get my beds in. BTW I learned about leveling the ground before from some 15 gallon grow bags and tomatoes this year. Level helps a bunch.

    Good to see your update about your Vego and Birdie's raised beds. I bought 2 Vego 10-in-one beds last fall. Where it took you only 2 hours, it took me 4 hours to put together one raised bed. I filled mine with a pecan tree I cut last year, dirt & bokashi from 3-40/45 gallon trash cans and 18 cubic feet of compost. I decided on a 8/7 feet by 4.5 feet configuration. This gives me the most growing area.

      Thank you for watching and I think I really was so determined to get it done but I was able to go faster. That is a great way to fill it, I am hoping to do some calculations later to talk about what it cost to fill the beds.

    i bought a water tank from tractor supply that looks like this but it has a metal bottom to hold water. i opened the drain and added about 5 inches of rock so its over the small drain. i put a peice of root barrier cloth on top the rocks then filled the rest with kow manure bags and the top foot was potting soil. the thing is doing great but i wish i knew at the time i could just toss a ton of old logs in there instead of buying a ton of bags to fill it up

    I've seen a number of videos where, like you, people filled a good portion of the bed with logs, branches, etc. Given that many vegetables have roots that go to 24 inches deep (some more), it seems that your beds really don't have much soil to work with. I like to have at least 20 inches of a mix of soil and aged compost to work with, and 24 inches would be better. Please update us on how well your plants grow in your beds.

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  2 роки тому

      That is a great point. I wish I had done just a wee bit more soil simply because the beds settled down. I will do an update video later, but so far most of the things that I planted have had a reasonable amount of production. Happy gardening my friend. Thanks for watching.

    Have you u ever considered aeroponic tower growing? I wonder if it's more cost effective? What are your thoughts. I personally do in ground traditional gardening but I don't have much space. So the idea of growing vertical is appealing.

    • @michelleinthemeadow
      @michelleinthemeadow  2 роки тому

      I am using greenstalk vertical planters. And I have a video coming out with that soon. I don't want a garden that requires me to have electricity for it to function. So I'm not a big fan of an aeroponic style Garden.

    I wonder if putting a layer of chicken wire (at the bottom, under the cardboard) would help keep moles from digging up into the garden? (I'm about to install my vego gardens myself). Thanks for the great vids! Very helpful.

    • @michelleinthemeadow

      You are very welcome, thank you for watching. Yes I think that it would be helpful. On a wooden bed that we had we added the hard for a cloth underneath. I don't know how big moles are perhaps the whole in the wire gaps needs to be fairly small? Good luck with your new garden bed and happy gardening.

    What kind of soil did you use and how many cubic feet did you use? Did you add any amendments? I have more beds coming and need to fill them all at the same time. I have the lower beds but will still do they same layering method on a smaller scale. I saw someone down the street who cut their tree and said I could have the limbs etc. Its been there for months so hopefully it will be there next weekend. (I am so happy to see your video!)

      I use a garden soil mix that can work in raised beds, from a local company. Since I do lots of gardening and Mom does lots of gardening we had a truckload brought in to help with all the projects around my Suburban Garden. I would estimate that I used about a yard of soil in each of the beds. And I made a huge mistake and forgot to amend the bed. When I planted the seedlings I added a mycorrhizal powder at the time. I have since come back through with plant food. Things seem to be doing much better now. Thanks for watching.

      We are in Northeast Florida, the dragon fruit stayed in the greenhouse all winter and seemed to really thrive in there.
