I'd say both barista's and chef's have some of the most demanding, stressful and underpaid jobs in the world. You need to love the work and what comes with it, as a succesful venue is a busy one. No easy days. I love your energy and spirit!

This type of job, working as a barista, in the kitchen, in the galley, and any similar scenario entails a lot of experience. You have to be really systematic, organized, focused, patient, willing to adjust to any changes, and open to improving oneself. This job is physical and mental. You have to be one step ahead. But if you master it, it will come automatically, as if you are playing! Learned a lot as a flight attendant working in the galley, sometimes being asked to help in the cabin, chatting and being friendly, diffusing an unpleasant situation, running to the back to check on a sick passenger, monitoring that passenger drinking his third Scotch, watching out for a possible smoker in the lavatory, selling Duty Free, doing inventory, and taking care of the flight deck crew! It was exhilarating, but very, very exhausting due to the time zone changes and ultra-long-haul flights. Point is, I like watching you work, Laura. You are very hardworking, organized and clearly a very optimistic person. For some reason, your vlogs entertain and calm me. Perhaps I miss that rush, and I feel less stress being on the other side of the screen lol! If I were a barista, I would have loved to work with you. Keep smiling (too bad we have to smile behind our masks nowadays, though). New subscriber here!

uuuh... Yeah. If you work in a factory, and are not "systematic, organized, focused, patient, willing to adjust to any changes, and open to improving oneself", then you'll be missing an arm or a leg in no time.
Sometimes you're asked to help clean a machine, load up another one, resolve another's error state, help out your new coworker that doesn't know the machine yet, and so on.
And I'm not even a factory worker; I just noticed that when I walked through the factory floor at the place I work at.

i recently worked in an independent coffee shop nearby my house as a barista. I struggled a lot because it is my first time working anywhere and my first coffee making experience so i am trying to improve my work flow to be more fast and competence. thank you for making this vlog, it reassures me a lot when you said it took you a long time to to multitask like this. hope to see more from you soon! -your fellow barista 💕

    Nice vid, subbed.
What skill should a barista have?
I'm not a barista but I worked as a concept store/coffee shop manager and the first thing I noticed, like 5min after entering the job the first day was the lack of organization and planning of the employees AND the boss.
The ability of multitasking comes after the skill of planning meticulously everything. And you clearly prove that in your video. You arrange every little detail so it makes multitasking easier.
The employees of the shop were trying to multitask but they were failing, in fact they were failing to even single task efficiently. So it was my job to show them how to do it by coming up with processes like you do. And I'm not only talking about the coffee shop but also the shop and eshop/web/communication parts.
As a concrete exemple, so many times the barista was doing other things than pulling shots, latte art and serving while I was bringing the dirty dishes and he was not cleaning those as I was bringing them so the counter was a mess, a real dirty mess and it would stay like that the whole day. It drove me crazy especially that customers would see it. When it was my turn to be the barista (including latte art) everything was pretty fluid, every task has to be managed to the end because interrupting it is in the end a waste of time. So I was able to be in the same time the barista, the commercial, the manager and the communication manager.
So yes first skill (and you clearly have it) --> organization+planning every little detail.
And to be honest seeing you working was a joy.

These vlogs are ao addicting! I know that coffee making is one of the more complex beverage making process, but going inside the cafe makes my head hurt because of the things baristas need to prepare, there are so many. Makes you feel grateful for every cup, you know. Thank you for the dedication!

as a barista myself I think it's very important to love your job & not do it for the money because being a barista seems easy but it's not & if you ront live what you're doing than you're just gonna cause a problem for yourself & everyone around
and second I think having good social skills & knowing customer service is also very important as well as always staying clean:)

Your Rosetta looks so good! Latte art is so hard. I'm not a barista (nor will I ever be one!!) but I loooove coffee. I tried latte art once and the fact that you have to focus on angling then lifting the cup at the same time as swirling the milk then doing the art is something I don't think I could ever do! Melbourne is the best place for coffee and for being a barista. Unfortunately for me when I arrived to Melbourne it was so hard to get hired without experience. No cafes would hired me as trainee or something others offered me 15 per hour but didn’t promise training. I really love coffee but sometimes the industry here is a bit snobbish and unless you know a lot you would be taken seriously. Cafe managers and Hopso businesses in general want you to already know everything.I eventually gave up and worked in cleaning because I had to pay bills , I am still thinking about trying again but definitely not working for free in order to get an opportunity 😅

Lift your jug higher when you cut back through the design (there's slight dipping at the top). Looks like you could try finish the rosetta a touch earlier and top up the cup at the end of the pour (bottom of the design). These things might stop you building up the thicc bit at the top. Great vid! You're doing a great job, super efficient. Nice!

3:35 I used to drink black coffee while fasting. I did it for years and it screwed up my digestion and I think my endocrine system. To much black coffee, usually strong from a moka pot... Be careful : )

    • @laurangelia
      @laurangelia  3 роки тому +1

Oh wow, thank you for the pre-caution! I usually only drink filter, which is quite light, since it's very diluted. We use 60 grams of coffee to 1 litre of water.. and I'm currently switching to just drinking water, because I don't drink enough water everyday, that's why I need to keep it up :) I hope you're okay though!

    • @rfdc

@@laurangelia Maybe it is different with filtered coffee. I just wanted to share my experience because they usually tell you it is ok to drink coffee, and I think it is not so black and white, it can have its downsides.
I was actually doing OMAD, so fasting for 23 hours a day and only eating one huge meal in the afternoons.
And I used to try to recreate an espresso shot using a moka pot at home, so as you can imagine the coffee was a lot stronger than filtered.
I am no longer doing IF and (as best as I can) I only drink coffee once a week, in a nice coffee place and I get a couple of espresso shots. So I feel I'm better. Thyroid is not at a 100% but at least no medication is needed. Digestion improved I think.
      Good luck!
      Fasting is an amazing thing.

Really enjoy your Barista vlogs Laura. They are good. I was intending to come there, but lockdown 2.0 beat me (guess it's gone back to takeaways only, for Gordon Cafe again).
I use to make coffees long time ago, but "barista" never used & only 2 types of milk.
When i (in early June) happened across your first video at the other cafe, i got sad.
I've not sat in a cafe since March & have/had been running a coffee social meetup group for 8 years, but same day as i saw your video, i ended my group as no point when can't have meets.
Looking forward tho to getting there one day, am in North suburbs so bit difficult now, but i jave mentioned Gordon Cafe to several friends in your area

If the steam pipe could be left at an angle, would your "magic" steaming work well?

Hey thanks for watching! :) I’m sorry about your group, there’s really nothing we can do about it now except to comply, be patient, cautious, and kind.. I hope things will get better soon and you can have your coffee social meetup group back again :) Thank you for mentioning Gordon to your friends, looking forward to serving you! Stay safe always :)

hope someone can answer my question!
why is she putting a cup on top of an other? at 0:49? I guess that its to put the cup closer to the portafilter, but why?

    • @AbuSalem2099
      @AbuSalem2099 3 роки тому

Maybe is a kind of riser, batistas use risers when the grouphead is high and or the weather is cold to get cups closer to portafilter to avoid coffee temp drop.

You shouldn't worry about taking charge of other people while you still mess up a lot yourself.
That's what my superior told me, and I agree. Just focus on yourself and you'll be ordering people around before you know it! :)
