  • I have found the holy grail of CRTs! This Sony KV-36FV310 has become my current obsession as of late. I have spent a lot of time hanging out with it and checking out all kinds of games and what they look like on the screen. This is peak performance! I picked up an HDCRT from OfferUp and quickly decided that I could find a better screen, and I found this one! It's crazy what you can find online for free!

      @@dangr3957 not to say rgb is the only way to go but most people who want this tv want their games to looks better than it did back in the day composite on a crt is definitely better than hooking directly to flat screens but if you have the option i think color correctness and fidelity in rgb (so i high res textures arent as blurred on n64 and other 90s consoles) is way more important than seeing the transparent water falls or other transparency effects on genesis most games are playable without the transparencies but i also have a genesis on composite for that reason on a separate crt

    if you are really into CRTs keep an eye out for a nice old PC crt. can still find them. I recommend anything with a 110khz or higher horizontal scan rate. Some people complain about Samsungs but I had one that looked ok. You will also need a graphics card with analogue out(newest cards with this are 900 series), possibly a dvi analogue to vga converter (small piece that makes it so you can use a vga cable instead of dvi cable), and possibly a VGA gender changer(if the pc crt has a cord on hard wired). You can have a lot of fun getting high refresh rates out of them + all the positive crt traits you listed in the video. I know you mainly want to game on that 36 inches though lmao.

      High-end CRT PC monitors are becoming pretty hard to find. I had to have one shipped from Florida to Canada - the casing got damaged in shipping, but it still worked.
      However, due to misuse (rapidly switching resolutions in a vain attempt to get it to work with an overly modern video card), the flyback eventually started arcing (and high-end flybacks are virtually impossible to find). I had to get another monitor shipped from ENGLAND, but this time it didn't survive shipping - the mainboard was weak from years of heat exposure (CRTs can legit warm a room) and cracked.
      My last hope is to swap the flyback from the latter into the former. Note that this is only possible because both tubes (and hence the flybacks) are EXACTLY the same model. This isn't for the faint of heart, because CRTs store dangerous levels of voltage. I sent away for specially rated gloves to handle the innards and discharge the voltage.

    Great vid! Its interesting to me with all the renaissance movement for retro gaming, consoles, etc; that there is NO-ONE making a modern version of the CRT. I understand that the process maybe expensive but I believe that anyone that can fill this niche would make a killing. Many enthusiast would not buy one but several; hopefully this can happen.

  • @Microwave414

    CRTs are the best way to play retro games hands down, perfect blacks and no input lag and just the right amount of softness to where the image even on component video doesn't look overly sharp. However there are some shaders on retroarch that when combined with an oled comes really close to mimicking the look. CRT Royale comes to mind as that doesn't mimic a PVM but a real honest to god consumer grade trinitron TV with scanlines and low count TV lines also which are the vertical lines that makes each "pixel" look separated from the next one over if you get up close to the screen. Heck it even mimics the glow effect of CRTs though, on an oled that's slightly redundant since oleds have that same exact glow effect also over bright sprites also. I'm not going to be throwing out my CRT anytime soon but its good to see the look preserved.

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 4 роки тому +1

      @@charvelgtrs To me lag is not the issue, what is the issue and I've seen it even on gaming monitors is blurring when things are moving fast, also black levels are something LCDs can never, ever get exactly like CRTs or oleds. Even FAL screens still have light bleed plus costs 3k to get something you can somewhat compare to an oled. On the flip side LCDs don't have to worry about burn-in which honestly is a legitimate trade-off between the 3 display types so there are real reasons to still use an LCD.

    • @charvelgtrs
      @charvelgtrs 4 роки тому +2

      @@Microwave414 OLEDs have no motion blur and perfect blacks. Burn in really isn't a problem unless you don't vary your content. I've heavily games on my 2006 Plasma and it still doesn't have any burn in.

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 4 роки тому +3

      @@charvelgtrs I've seen motion blur on my oled when playing sonic 2 or sonic CD and going at top speeds through an act so I'm pretty sure it still very much exists however, I am also running on a late 2015 model OLED so that might explain it. Also its barely noticeable and you really do have to go looking for it while on LCDs it's hard not to see the motion blur, especially in 2d games. Lastly yeah with burn-in I don't really think about it, most people I've seen complaining about burn-in either had a faulty screen from the factory or had news and/or sports running on their screen almost all day long. You really have to work hard and/or be really stupid to ruin an oled.

    I’m glad you mentioned the KV-27HS420, I got one because it had HDMI too! I’ve got a gaming PC, Roku, and Apple TV hooked up to it right now and I have a high quality pass through dual splitter on the HDMI port to save wear and tear when I hook up different gaming systems to it. As far as lag, I don’t really notice it very much, I just play the game and adjust naturally after a bit I guess, it’s so much fun to play games on a CRT! New games are cool too as I’ve finally gotten around to playing “Farcry 5” and it looks fantastic! I have a JVC Pro series CRT as well that I got before I stumbled onto this one and it’s pretty great in its own right so others should know not to feel discouraged if you don’t find a Trinitron as there’s some great CRTs from the other brands too. If I remember correctly, both ended up costing $15-20 altogether so it’s not all that big of an investment to get a CRT these days if you find one locally and avoid the auction sites. The only downside for me is that the screen doesn’t adjust and scale all that well for regular PC use so it’s sometimes tricky when using my gaming PC and the windows are huge even when I have the desktop scaled right. The best thing for this used to be the ATI Radeon All In Wonder series with component output as that was able to adjust the screen properly for PC use on my old Panasonic CRT TV but it’s all DVI, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort now. Oh well, minor issue altogether, hopefully these CRTs last for a long while yet and I never have to replace them!

    I got a 32" Philco 16:9 CRT recently, the picture quality is so phenomenal that it looked like a OLED tv or something, minus the HD resolution.
    When you sit 10ft from the screen or more, you can't tell the difference in resolution anymore, all you see is that AMAZING contrast and INCREDIBLE colors.
    Being widescreen, modern content looked perfect on it, such as movies.
    I bought an HDMI to Component converter, with the ability to downscale FullHD content to 480i, so now I can hook my PS4, PC, etc to my CRT. lol
    For retro games that were originally in 4:3 format, it supports that too. The screen is big enough that a 4:3 image in it is as big as a 29" TV screen.
    Since then I've ditched my LED TV, the image quality is SO BIG, that I'll hapily trade the high resolution of the LED for it.
    They say the last plasma TVs from Panasonic and OLED TV can rival the picture quality of these CRTs, but I can't easily get my hands on one right now, so I'll keep using the hell out of my CRT for now. lol

      I've found that latency on my Sony WEGA only presents itself when using the HDMI port or while using a resolution lower than 480i over component cables. Man, my friend and I had suffered greatly only a few months ago lugging a 32" Sony XBR Trinitron into my apartment but now I'm heavily considering the one from the video. There may or may not be one down in the San Diego area. How did you pull it off, rent a truck and 3 guys to move?!

      Go for it! A buddy of mine and I rented a U-Haul van for the day and were able to move it with just the two of us. If you can't find an furniture to set the TV on hit up Home Depot and they'll cut the wood you need to the correct specifications!

      @@Scarflix This one might come with the OG stand. The TV is free but I'll have to grease some palms to have a few buddies of mine help out 😅

    I never thought about how smooth analog TVs were until I played Tomb Raider Last Revelation on this tv after playing games on my Samsung Slim HD CRT for so long. I thought it had little to no lag and didnt bother me. Crazy how the truth set you free.
