You don't have to go with a Trini set, Panasonic TAU, JVC I'Art, Toshiba A-Series, are all just as good, if not better in some cases, don't sleep on RCA (Thomson) either, or Hitachi, Sharp, all the Japan made CRTs are crem'da'la'crem, your main concern is getting one with as low hours as possible, if you are ok with a smaller set, PC monitor CRTs are a great option, a 17 or 18 incher can be had for a reasonable amount, and lastly, look into plasmas, they are not by any means a bad alternative to CRTs if you are after a bigger screen for your retro games, keep in mind a plasma will need an OSSC or RetroTink for the quality integer scaling they have to keep 240p games looking crispy.

@@Wobble2007 I would like to add that the Korean ones are good too, mainly LG and Samsung and even Daewoo, especially later models are comparable to Sonys, I have a 2008 Samsung that is my best CRT for sure in terms of picture quality and probably one of the last ever made and a 36inch LG FLATRON from 2006 that is great. Honestly all CRTs are good and an improvement over LCDs for retro games, if the tube is in good shape and not too dim or defective then you're good.

I found a 32 inch Sony Trinitron on the curb someone was throwing away, its plugged in in my garage with a Super Nes atm where the kids are playing Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country (don't own many games atm cuz I sold all mine as a kid before they were even born), but man do those games look amazing on that thing. I think its more of a flat screen and the scanlines look incredible, even on a Composite cable the picture is so much clearer than I remember as a kid.

One of my top #10 reasons for wanting to move out of my apartment and get a house is to have more room for CRTs. My 36" Trinitron is stored safely at my parents house but that thing is going to need a custom built crate for it without handles as I never want to carry it up/down stairs again without that. I do like it's flat screen for 3D gaming but for 3D/Sprite games I actually prefer my curved screens.

    • @casedistorted

Yea I found a 32 inch Trinitron on the curb and I almost didn't take it as it sat there for a few days because it was so heavy, I needed to have help to lift it into my suv, and it took up the entire trunk space. A 36 inch I couldn't imagine lifting.

No motion blur is the greatest advantage CRTs have over modern displays at this point in my opinion. I have many options to play my retro consoles, but the CRT is still king.

    • @NintenPizza
      @NintenPizza 5 місяців тому +4

Well that's just it. CRT's are still king in the motion clarity department, simply because they have no motion blur. And there's zero latency, although games running at 120-144fps on QD-OLED drops input lag down to 5ms, which is good enough imo. Plus 120-144fps cuts down 50-60% of OLED motion blur, which gets you into plasma motion clarity territory.
The best you can do with 60fps gaming on QD-OLED like with those HD Clone FPGA consoles like Super Nt, Mega Sg, Duo(etc) or even the original consoles, is by pairing them with an expensive scaler via HDMI or component(HD Retrovision)like the RetroTINK4K, and using it's 60hz BFI(plus HDR to SDR brightness boosting trick to compensate for the 50% drop in brightness by using BFI), which will wipe out 50% of OLED motion blur.
Supposedly the TINK4K adds 2ms of lag on it's own, it's 60hz BFI adds another 8ms, and you'll get a few more ms of latency from that HDR SDR brightness booster setting. So probably less than 15ms total that you'll be dealing with. Sure, QD-OLED + Tink4K has perfect blacks, higher brightness and progressive scan for retro gaming, but CRT still has zero lag & zero motion blur. ;)
The problem is, finding something like a 27" Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT these days with low hours is becoming extremely difficult. These are 15 year old TV's. They won't look as bright as they once did, black levels will be lighter and the colours won't be quite as good either.
      A QD-OLED(Think Samsung S90D) + RetroTINK4K is the next best alternative. ;)

@@NintenPizza Funny enough I have both the RetroTINK4k and the 27" Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT you mentioned. Both are amazing, and I move my MiSTer between the two. For the TINK the LG OLED BFI does a good job of addressing motion blur, but the nits aren't high enough on my set, and increasing them too high on the TINK I seem to lose detail and the colors look off - which is not the TINKs fault it's the modern TV. It's worth noting that motion blur only bothers me in fast paced 2D games, so N64, PSX, GameCube and other 3D console I leave BFI off and it looks close to CRT quality to me. The CRT looks great, and I know it's not as good as it was new, but I honestly can't see any color or other issues, and I accept that nothing in the analog world is perfect. I have the TINK4k because it's awesome, and while I'll never part with my CRT for as long as I live, when modern TVs improve or my CRT dies I hope to get a comparable experience on modern TVs with the TINK.

The other 15 or so I have in storage, because as you said they aren't getting younger and once they're dead they're dead. I got most of mine for real cheap as well, most people were "free, just take it."
Fun story, when my grandma-in-law moved into assisted living she had a component input 100 pound CRT in her basement. My mother-in-law was all frustrated that she'd have to pay someone to move it (because she didn't want anyone in her family getting hurt carrying it up the stairs) and then pay to dispose it. I turned it on and said "tube looks good and has the uncommon component inputs, put it on craigslist as 'free you just have to move it.'" She was skeptical that someone would want it but it was gone the next day. If it wasn't for "you are not getting another TV, you have enough already" I would have taken it.

The warm glow you refer to is the natural incandescence CRTs have, from the phosphors and electron gun, plasmas have it to a certain degree too, the phosphors get excited a different way, but it's not too far from a CRT, nothing can replace that almost three-dimensional depth of the image though imo, unless we are talking the new 16K OLED light-field displays, but there is more to it than that with CRTs, it's the natural dynamic motion they have, the greyscale performance, the shadow-detail that makes games like Doom 3 or Resident Evil pop, I think when eQD is readily available, and an 8K or even 16K RetroTink to use with it, at that point, there may be a genuine option to replace the big screen CRTs with at least, replacing PVM/BVM/PCM CRTs will be a tall order though.

I found all 3 of these during a small town Recycling event in Wisconsin while driving my school bus route, so I got super lucky. All 3 came from nice little neighborhoods where old people just didn't want them anymore, sadly.
There were SO many CRT's that were being recycled and were in hauling away boxes at the local town hall, most of them were just RF or Composite only inpuits, the ones I got all have S-Video and Component, which is awesome. Now I just need the dang consoles again, I had everything prior to 2010 but sold everything before 'retro gaming collecting' got really big.
I wish I had a PVM or BVM but it seems those are still very hard to find or they're expensive.
The only thing I don't like about CRT's is the whine or noise they make, but I miss the look and glow that they have, it feels like they're alive compared to flat LCD's that are lifeless and too bright.

Wow man those big TVs look superb ! At some point i owned 7 CRTs but i had to reduced to just 2 because they were breaking my back and gave me an hernia. Nowadays i own a 24" Phillips a little Magnavox 14" and one Sony 32" Plasma. I still browse CL and FB market looking for a good deal so maybe i'm addicted to these monsters. LoL

These tvs are impossible to carry because of the uneven weight distribution and shape. I carried a 27" Trinitron down the stairs without gloves and felt like my back was gonna break even though I think it's only 80lbs. With a 40" I think you would need 4 people and it's maybe 150lbs. If you carried a 36" by yourself you are a beast!

This vid inspired me to get a 34" Trinitron ( SD ). I really love it, - obv for games its great, but I spend most of the time watching DVDs in 480i, - certain shows like the Simpsons - the colour pops in a way thats even better than OLED, - Is DVD inherently 480i? - if I play a DVD on a 480p screen using component or RGB will I get a 480p signal or is there maybe a special DVD player than can convert it? - 480i flicker is not terrible, but I am itching for better. - The other thing I am really keen on is a 34 or 36" that takes VGA - I would love to play DOS games at 640x480 while on the couch.

Hi, I've just subscribed and I'd like to know if those CRT TVs are connected from RGB out from consoles and through a RGBS (or SCART) to Component (YPbPr) inputs. I'm wondering about this because here in the western hemisphere (both North and South America) TV maximum resolution support is through component inputs and TVs don't come with SCART inputs as in Europe.
Great video and great content! 😉
I hope you're doing well, here I'm trying to cope with winter 🥶 in Chile 🇨🇱, South America (currently July 28th 2024)

I grew up with crt’s and gigantic projection tv’s! Around 2004 I was rewarded a brand spankin’ new black Sharp crt tv because my mom, step dad and I lived at our apartment for one whole year lol. It must’ve been a 20 incher. I played a lifetime of PS2 on that thing. We also had a silver/gray flat teen sony Trintron crt in our living room at that time. Unfortunately I threw the Sharp tv away when I was in my mid twenties ( what a moron). I have no clue what happened to that grey sony Trintron. I believe my step pops recycled it 😥 Fast forward to today and I have slowly been growing my cathode ray tube collection 📺 I have two 20” Sony Trinitrons, a 19” Trintron, a 13” Trintron, a tiny Panasonic w/built in vcr and a big ole 27” Trintron that’s currently in a repair shop. They’re all black with rounded tube screen. That’s my ideal crt. Not a fan of the silver/gray ones. Happy hunting y’all

The only troubling thing here about the CRTs tv is that for some reason the gamers like to use these for just gaming. These tvs were not design with gamers in mind. These were the central entertainment center of our living rooms decades ago. Why cant gamers use todays for their gaming....i dont understand. I am not a gamer ..never have or be even when gaming first appeared back in the late 70s. I still own my Sony Wega 32" crt tv i bought back in August of 2007. Its still going strong and has a strong vibrant clear sharp picture the day i purchase it. Im not comparing to todays flat screens. But i wonder how many of todays tvs will last as long as my crt tv.

So I want to know, what would the theoretical highest resolution be that a CRT could go up to if there was still innovation in the production of CRTs? They can indeed do 1080i and higher with decent refresh rates, but what could they get to and would they still be able to have high refresh rates, maybe even higher than CRTs normally are? And also I know the monitors had to be higher resolutions to display text nicely, but why didn't they make the TVs high definition when they clearly had the technology for it?

Having CRT's to close to each other can be bad in the long term, especially if speakers are on the side like your wide-screen. The magnets in the speakers will over time start to stretch the picture of the screen sat next to it. While both screens are there you won't see the distortion, but 5-10 years from now and if one dies and is moved having been stood next to each other that long the image will slowly pull towards where the magnets were on the removed screen...
Try to get 1/2 a meter gap between CRT's. Move the wide-screen slightly away more from the other screen, and think about moving the white, and smaller black one on top of the other screen.

Any suggestions in terms of a CRT that is relatively "lightweight" but still has decent image quality?
I'm setting up my new office in 2 weeks and would love me something as lightweight as my Amiga 1084S for my game development endeavors (that monitor would be perfect already, but I'm not sure it supports all the resolutions used by retro consoles, plus it's sort of flickery in interlaced mode).

I have noticed the Sony sets are generally a bit heavier than the other brands for some reason, so maybe avoid those! If you go with a 20” or a 27”, those are still a bit heavy but a lot more manageable. I certainly think JVC is a good brand, I’ve heard great things about Toshibas as well but have not tried them myself. Good luck setting up your new office!

I have a MISTER and a couple CRTs sitting beside each other, one sitting regular and one on its side for TATE games. But every time I wanna play TATE games I have to unplug the component cable from the one TV and plug it into the other. I'm sure there's a simple switch device solution, but I've not got around to researching. Is that thing you have what I need? Or if it's not do you know what I DO need? lol . Thanks.
