I'm pretty much all states have their sirens tested every month, I don't live in Tornado Alley but the sirens still go off every month here, it just went off a couple of minutes ago in fact. I personally think they are kind of cool :) I actually get excited when I hear them, even during tornado season, I just find weather so fascinating
There's a difference between hearing them on a monthly basis for testing than hearing them when there is actually a tornado. I also think it's the thought behind the siren that scares people, not the sound of it. I personally don't find either the siren or tornadoes scary, but that's probably because I live in a state that's more prone to tornadoes than others. I guess people's responses all depend on how immune they are to the sound
My wife's home town tests their siren every Saturday morning at 7AM. The first time I spent the night at her parents' place, the siren went off and I busted into full-on ninja-reflex get-everyone-to-the-basement mode (used to live in Oklahoma). My wife just looks at me, says "It's just a test" and goes back to sleep.
It may be because I grew up in the Midwest and spent more than a few nights in the basement during tornado outbreaks, but the sound of a tornado siren STILL makes my hair stand on end!
3 working STH-10 sirens. 1 street-front pole mounted STH-10 in front of volunteer fire hall at the junction of Main & Haynes. Another on top of city hall on I think 6th street and main. And the siren in this video is just north of the rr tracks that run east to west in the train yard. We also have a non-op. siren on the main street court house.
Hey BigSky...we have the same siren here in Polson (Lake County) and there's two in Flathead County...one's in Kalispell downtown and one just above Eureka near the Canadian border. There used to be one in Pablo by the Tribal Police HQ but they moved south to Ronan so their VFD could hear it also. Nice video!
