I've been fighting rapier for 3 years. This is right up there with the best "how to rapier" videos on the internet. I would send anyone to this video who was studying Fabris.

The degrees to radians conversion was crucial for my understanding of rapier fencing, thank you so much!

To be fair, if it was given as a a fraction of tau, it would actually be useful. 1.571 radians is not all that intuitive. 0.25*tau radians, on the other hand, makes it pretty clear it's a quarter turn :D

I've been fencing for a couple years and thought I was terrible because I couldn't figure out why my beats and parrys would throw my sword out of line every single time and then this guy comes in with a lesson for first timers and changes my life with that wrist trick.
I really hope that at the end of learning weapons series, Jason and Brian have a huge competition where they both fight each other with every weapon they learned about, one dual per weapon, whoever wins the most battles at the end is granted the title "The Warrior Supreme"

The head instructor is excellent. He has a certain poise in his movements and you can see the centering of his mass. He is always balanced. His second is close in his movements. I've learned so much thank you for sharing!

YES, somebody said it finally!!! Rapiers were originally quite broad. That thing is a fencing sword, or florete.
What's the difference?
This specific rapier guy has them confused in his description. A rapier was definitely a military sword and a small sword was a civilian or upper class weapon

I've been re-watching a lot of your old videos recently, and seeing this in my recommendations is great. Seeing the older videos reminded me of why I love your content so much.

I was a Ninjutsu Instructor for awhile and I thought these guys were great instructors and concise in the things that were important. Frankly blown away by how good of instructors they are
This interested me more than I thought it would, I kind of want to try fencing out, especially with Rapiers. I always thought fencing looked dumb, but now I kind of understand what they are doing, what the goal is. Made it much, much more interesting.
You want HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).
The type of fencing you're thinking about is nothing like this.
@@hailhydreigon2700If there isn't a HEMA club near by then modern Olympic fencing is still better than nothing.
Keep a hema mindset in mind. Buy a rapier and treatises and practice at home. Hopefully convince a friend at the club to join you.
And remember that you're training to fight effectively not just to win a contest. Avoid double touches and weak flicks. (These are things HEMA practitioners can also be guilty of)
Yes!!! Love it when you learn a new skill with awesome masters/senseis/teachers present. We learn so much and it is great to see the love they have for their craft. Whether it is parkour, fighting with long swords, firing a bow while galloping, jiu jitsu...it really doesn`t matter. It is both fun and amazing to watch, and I love the long videos!!!
Please make a video where you learn self-defense when you are wheelchair bound. That would be great, and mighty helpful!!

If anyone was ever wondering what the Fifth Rule of Proceeding With Resolution was, here it is.
Rule 5 of Proceeding With Resolution is to advance when your enemy has his hand rather straight, by turning your own point from either above or below, pointed directly at his hand.
In this way, you force him to choose which side he wants to defend or attack, and you can quickly avoid his blade in that tempo to strike at his body.
You should use your hilt to defend your body as you turn your hand to make your thrust. Having the point at your opponent's hand makes caving all the more quick.
The reason it runs counter to what they were learning is that in general, Fabris says that you ideally want to control the outside line, because for your opponent, it's very weak for them, and advantageous for you. It also makes controlling the blade much easier and maintains blade contact, which is important in rapier fencing in general regardless if you're discussing Fabris, Capo Ferro, or Thibault.
Maintaining blade contact is much safer in rapier fencing, and easier. Further, not many people have that quick reaction to make this rule work as intended by Fabris.

very interesting and very in depth for such a (relatively speaking) short video! Thank you! I just took an interest in rapier fencing like... well yesterday. I've been doing some years of Filipino Kali which also is a weapons based art and was somewhat influenced by the Spanish as they occupied the Filipines and I find it interesting how many parallels can be found between arts. There are obvious differences, too of course which come from that both arts have different focus (for lack of a better word). For example, I immediately recognized the definition of distances. In Kali we defined them a little differently maybe but in the end it amounts to pretty much the same distance brackets (adjusted for the length of the weapons used of course). We'd use the terms largo, medio and corto (long, medium, close) to differentiate those distances.
Finally. I've been waiting for a good long MR video to come back with teachers and stuff.

I did fencing (saber style) in highschool, I still have the medals from the competitions. I explain to friends and family all the time how it's more like fast paced chess with swords and not just waving around like barbarians.

@@DubiousDubs I can drop some destreza authors, but i practice Salvatore Fabrice fencing which is italian, so i don't really know anything more than a few basics: Francisco Lorenz de Rada, Luis Pacheco de Narvaez, Jerónimo Sánchez de Carranza. Those are the ones that ring a bell and i know of academies that use their systems. But beware because it is kinda different system from the one in the video.

I've recently completed a novel that involved a rapier fight at the climax. During the editing process, I will definitely be incorporating some of the amazing lessons I learned from this video into the book. Thank you for this video; very interesting! I like how you guys had a few funny moments but also took the topic seriously and did your best to follow along with what the instructor was saying. This was really cool, guys!
Whoo boy, if you like writing stuff with sword fights, you should train in it! HEMA is becoming more and more popular, so chances are there's a club near you. Like they mentioned in the video, they're doing Fabris, but he's just one style of rapier. George Silver, Rada, Destreza... they're all significantly different while still using rapiers.
Mike Edelston, whose well known in the HEMA community, wrote a book centered around sword fighting. You should check it out. Also, what's the name of your book? I'd like to read it!

@@Ruizg559 That's really cool! Yeah, I'll definitely be checking that out. Well, to be honest the novel I wrote isn't really about sword fights; it just happens to have one brief one at the climax of the story. The book I wrote is called Killing Day: A Love Story. It's more of a philosophy book with some action and a bit of romance sprinkled in. It's more of a trippy, surreal, dialog-driven story. It does need a bit of editing so no promises it wouldn't have some rocky parts lol. I posted it on wattpad, along with the 2 other novels I've written, so you and anyone else that might be interested can read it for free there. Thanks for your comment and the info about that book though, I'll for sure check that out!

I love how during the more experienced duel, some of the times they would get into a grapple or an extremely (dis)advantageous position for one or the other, and then just stop because they both were observant and skilled enough to recognize that a stab wasn't necessary to see who the victor was.
Wow the whole thing about footwork and moving was absolutely fascinating. I think I could integrate this to shooting and keeping the gun still while on the move
