  • The Talladega racetrack in Alabama was originally slated to be built in Spartanburg, SC. Spartanburg natives David Pearson, Cotton Owens and Bud Moore are among those that give thoughts on what might have been.

First time I drove through Spartanburg when I drove truck I blew my horn and blasted The Marshall Tucker Band on my radio all the way through it. Was in tears when I got passed the city limits. Also before I got to the city limits, I pulled over and on my dirty truck wrote the number '15' on both sides. I felt I had reached racing heaven that day. Never will forget it as I'm sure many motorists that day never forgot that crazy truck driver from California with #15 blowing his horn and waving to everyone and anyone with "Take the Highway" blasting on the radio.
R.I.P. BUD MOORE, DAVID PEARSON AND ALL THE REST THAT LIT ME UP AS A KID FROM THE GREATEST RACING TOWN IN AMERICA!

I was born and raised in Spartanburg, as a teenager I knew some of the local drivers David, Cotton, Rex White, Elmo Henderson and others I was their paper boy. The civic leaders have made some very unsound business decisions over my life time. Talledega was one of them. The leaders just missed the boat on that one. but boy oh boy have times changed, when Michelin and BMW came along the county leaders could not give them enough in concessions, tax breaks, building roads, etc. and continue to do so today.

As a Carolina Boy and a Driver I would have to seen S.C. get that superspeed way. And you can beat there would be more folks at the track and think how far we would have gotten with both I26 & I85 already here! It's not to damn late!

Some people you just can't get to change. That decision cost them million's in revenue. Way to go Spartanburg.
How did they ever get railroads and highways ?

Be careful what you wish for. You need look know further than Atlanta to see what comes of wide open, uncontrolled growth.
