In the bedrock edition, when you are making you’re character, in the mouth section, there’s something called “Steve’s mouth?” And in the facial hair section there’s something called “Steve’s beard?” So I guess Mojang leaves the player to decide if it’s a smile or a beard.

Well it was originally a beard, before it was removed because people thought was a smile. They added it back, so it might be a beard, might be a smile.
