  • Made in Abyss had its second season this year which also was the signal for me to binge it all. After completing both seasons and a jaw dropping movie, I have come to the conclusion that this is very much a painfully amazing series. Let us discuss this emotional journey. As always, thank you for watching, your support is always appreciated.

For your worries about the story sticking the landing we aren't sure yet because from this point in the anime there's not much material in the manga and if I'm not mistaken we're probably near the midpoint of the story by the end of S3, but if there's one thing that's certain it's that this author is taking his sweet time with developing this story and its characters and world. So if there's anything that's certain it's that this author is not interested in rushing his story for release dates or sacrificing his fanbase's patience for a better quality product.

The ending doesnt matter tbh, the show is literally about the journey/adventure. Its almost certain to end in tragedy. Thats what the abyss does. It swallows dreams and people whole. Riko never stood a chance, she was touched by the abyss before she was born.

Hopefully it stays that way, as the anime grows in popularity the studios producing them will start lighting a fire under him to produce more. I hope he holds his ground and works at his own pace. Made in Abyss is like a work of art.

On the positive side, the latest chapters have been impressively meaty on a narrative level (and gorgeous, as usual), with a lot being set into motion which I think will be crucial to the final stretch of the manga whenever Tsukushi gets there. Also: Srajo the Obscure. I need say no more.

Bondrewd is such a fascinating antagonist. Irredeemable, an absolute monster, but he's not insane. He cares about the kids that he experiments on and I don't know if that makes it better or worse. If you didn't know, his theme, "The Rumble of Scientific Triumph," even has a children's choir for the vocals, which is just that much more disturbing.
Also, I just love the absolute swagger he has in the way he says "Gangway!"

I felt like the creator knew nothing could top the shock value and pure horror embodied in the Mitty transformation sequence, and figured by this point we were all expecting the same gorey grotesque style. So instead chose a different route that acted more like a slow train wreck that progressively got worse the more you thought about it. It was more psychological horror than just body horror.
The implications of Iryuumi giving birth to unfinished hollow babies that were born to die was chilling. The bastardization of a young girls (questionable) wish to be a mother.
Personally I wasn't all that shocked by Iryuumis transformation when I first watched it. It wasn't until I processed what actually happened to her, and what the rest of the crew were actually doing (killing and eating hollow babies), that I got that WTF feeling.
Such a different experience but just as impactful.

My fucked up theory. Lyza uses Riko to obtain power of some kind. She needs a child of an Aubade(Reg) and a reanimated human(Riko). Of course the 2 are opposed to the idea but Lyza mind controls Reg somehow to r*pe Riko. Then they somehow defeat Lyza and sacrifice themselves for the greater good and Riko will be remembered as The White Whistle Riko of The End.

I have a theory. What if, in the center of the abyss…. Is a black hole. A portal to another dimension. The planet is essentially going down a tube and being crushed under the pressure and scattered amongst the stars of an entirely different universe. I can’t think of anything else more grandiose and perfect for this series. Something so natural and devastating that you can’t help but feel you are one with the abyss. Is there hope? No idea.

Season 2 was so great. There was no real "villain" Just a bunch of decent people who are forced into bad situations. They show what a real villain looks like at the very beginning. I think everyone can agree that Vueko's father is evil. Everyone in the Ganja squad are "good people" Irumyuui was sentence to death by her tribe and Ganja squad saved her. Does that make it right what they did to her, absolutely no, but it shows how good people can be driven to bad things. Wazukyan wasn't a bad guy, he did everything he could to save as many as he could. He wanted everyone's dream to come true, he's the one who gave the wish granting egg to Irumyuui. The Abyss is the one that granted their wishes in the most ironic and messed up way.

Berserk and Made in Abyss are my two favorite anime. The Evangelion always holds a special place in my heart, but at this point I can’t tell if it’s because of the story or the mix of the story with meta effect of way it was executed and Hideki Anno and his real events and how they impacted Eva and how I feel
    About it.
Anyhow, berserk and made in abyss are like two sides of the same coin. Both are so bleak and so spiritually satisfying at the same time.

One of the things that really stuck with me from The Golden City of the Scorching Sun which I don't see brought up all that often, maybe because it is only one small character arc of many in a season which had a *lot* going on, is Belaf's atonement. You have this man who, perhaps out of jealousy for the closeness between Vueko and Irumyuui due to his boyish crush on Vueko, essentially forsook this young girl who he was, despite himself, beginning to see as a daughter, and then in his moment of deepest weakness he is saved by an act which he sees as a far crueller betrayal to that child… and worse, the taste of it literally lingers in his mind, delicious. He begs the one he betrayed, now something approaching a god, to give mercy and kill him, and Irumyuui transforms him into something beautiful and alien and, most horribly, all but immortal, forced to dwell on what he did for centuries, then finally, when he is given the freedom to die, he makes his peace by passing on his memories of these people who he truly loved to his would-be daughter's daughter, the only just and kind thing he felt he had left to do. It's… harrowing.
Oh, and the little stuffed animal Hollows saying goodbye to Nanachi. And Riko's gift to Maaa. And Faputa's speech to the Village, and when they offer themselves to her one by one. Just. The entire last few episodes of that season. God. I've been trying to write about it for months and there is so much and it means so much to me and there is nothing quite like it.

    @samisuhonen9815 Рік тому

A lot of people consider that the show must be near its' end because Riko already has her white whistle and made it to the 6th layer, the end. But no, I'd like to think, that the 6th layer is just the start. The layers 1-5 are just the tip of the iceberg. At the 5th layer there was this ancient abandoned ritual city for lowering people into the 6th layer and below. It is a gateway.
I would assume there are many layers below the 6th. Which makes it kind of miserable that the expedition for the golden city, mistook the 6th layer for the golden city, just because there were some ruins. And well, they were tired, they wanted the journey to be over, they wanted to rest. But they picked an awful location for it, due to the water parasites. From there everything derailed for them.
But it will be interesting to see, what lies below the 6th layer. How much more depth? Is it going to get increasingly dark and miserable? Is the bottom going to be a trap, mere emptiness? Or will there be a genuine golden city, a paradise only for those with the courage and capability to journey all the way there? So deep and lost that no message from there could ever return. Patrolled by beings so formidable, nobody could even attempt to send a message back to the surface.
This could explain why bondrewd has not found it yet. We know he has a unique power of going to the 6th layer and returning. Well, practically, but not technically. As he is able to shift his soul, mind, memories, and personality into new bodies, he can just send an expendable body into the 6th layer, get trinkets and trade in the hollow city, pop back into the lift, lose the humanity of his body, pick up the mask and relics he obtained, and keep being bondrewd as another body.
But even he needs a lift or something to bring his deformed corpse along with its' trinkets back up from the 6th layer. Who knows, maybe he is aware of the actual bottom of the abyss, by sending one of his bodies there on a one way trip to die and find out. But he himself is unable to return as that body, come or go as he pleases. So he is absolutely consumed by the desire to beat the curse. He is almost losing it, desiring Reg's body that is not affected by the curse. Maybe he even knows what Reg is, what he was built for, and by whom.
