One in One Out/Sorting My Shelves #1 | February 2021

- In the first of a new monthly series, I go through all the books that arrived at Savidge Reads HQ in a month and see which I have read, which I have not… and what to do with those. As 2021 is the year of the one in one out rule, once the shelves are full they are full and it’s a case or lose the new books or replace/switch them for old. Eek. See how I got on in the first one and let me know what you would like to see in the next. #SortingTheShelves #Unhaul #BookshelfTour #OneInOneOut

Good idea about the try a chapter, give another chance.
The Last Chance Savidge Saloon. Ha.
“Chunk in, chunk out” - me when I go swimming
I’m sure that’s not true. I’m a chunk but I think chunky is funky.
@@SavidgeReads we’re chunky, funky and fabulous 💃🏻💃🏻
ooooh I *love* this concept!!
Awww thanks so much. Though I come across quite chaotic I think. Hahaha, it was quite stressful. I’m already slightly dreading the next one. Ooh and thank you for recommending Whites. I’ll be reading that this month.
Loved this video! I empathise with your couture situation. The other day i went to the grocery store wearing jogging pants which is not a problem, but I had not noticed that they had a rip in them and my bottom would have shown. Mercifully I had a shirt on which would have covered much of the unwanted view and I was also wearing unmentionables, but it was still embarrassing.
Thank you for the video!
Hahahaha. Thank you for the giggles you’ve just brought me. Hahaha.
Yes, definitley do the second chance saloon. I would love to see if you do end up loving any of the books that you are ready to get rid of at this point.
Hahaha. I’ll see what I can do.
I love the ideas of one chance saloon and one on one off
I loved the chaotic energy of this video :) don't change a thing!
Hahahahahaha. Chaotic energy. Hahaha. That’s tickled me.
Love the read a chapter idea for your second chance books. Love the read it/not read it. Makes me feel better about all the books I meant to read and never got to...I just get distracted and end up reading something else, and then I feel the book from my proper TBR list glaring at me judgmentally...
I’m delighted to make you feel better. Hahaha.
Yes! Love the idea of a try a chapter vlog! 📚
Think I’ll do it soon!
The look of satisfaction on your face when you call out READ. I love it!
Hahaha. 10 times in 55. Bloody hell.
I am so jealous of your tbr room! Book lover goals for sure!
I’m very lucky. Well I’ve worked bloody hard to get it but am also lucky. That’ll make sense if you’ve seen the TBR video. Ha.
This video was so much fun! Definitely to the try a chapter!
I shall before the month is through.
I love this video! It's a great idea, looking forward to seeing more
Thanks Harriet.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this--it was more fun than facing my own stacks and need to cull. The read one chapter idea sounds excellent, and I plan to give it a try on some unread books hanging about. Having a long, semi-bleak winter weekend. Reading and hearing about books others are reading is always a quick, intriguing diversion. Thanks!
A pleasure I am so pleased you enjoyed it. I think the try a chapter tag is going to be interesting. Especially with those five.
Really enjoyed this video and looking forward to more in the series 🌸
Thank you!
Love the last chance shelf idea
Yes. I’ll be going through it later this week.
Loved this video, books and organisation my two favourite things to watch all in one! I quite liked the read not read bit at the beginning, I think it helped me get it all straight in my mind more than if you just showed the piles after you’d sorted them. Can’t wait till you do another one like this
I think I’ll keep it but maybe just talk about the proofs in one lump sum as the reason I got them... is cos they were proofs. Hahaha. With the ones I buy that’s a different story.
You encouraged me to purge my bookshelves. I took three bags to charity shop and discovered I have multiple copies of many books but most important I found a pile that I want to read and reread.
Wow. That’s brilliant. I wish charity shops were open here. Even better libraries. I’ve all the books from between Christmas and new year ready for Liverpool libraries.
Sending love for all you do to make isolation tolerable, Happy Valentine's Day. Still want to read the Glenconner memoir and Murder on Mystique. Now I'll be anxious to see Michelle Pfeiffer in French Exit, which I read. Now I'm not sure you said Michelle Pfeiffer, I also did not care for the anticlimactic Dutch House, but I love Ann Patchett.
I'm really happy you moved Out. I kept getting distracted by it... Well done :)
Hahaha. People are getting distracted by Arabella. She’s not moving though.
Brilliant video. You are so brave culling your book. I don't have that many but hate getting rid of any. Love to pass ones that Iove onto close friends that I know will look after them. Keep your joy coming xx
It’s hard to do a cull, the edits make it look a bit easier. Hahaha.
I just started Cantoras yesterday (after putting it off for over a year) and already I know that it's gonna be a new favourite! Happy to see it's found a place on your shelves!
Yes, I’m looking forward to getting to it when the mood takes me. Lol.
Good luck! Welcome to the STRESS
Phew. I’m thrilled to have your blessing. You inspired me so here’s a homage. Lol. I don’t know how you limit yourself to a trolley. I’ve had to use mine as back up 🤣
I really enjoyed this video. Great idea!!! And yes definitely do try a chapter on those books, I reckon.
Thank you. Will be trying a chapter this weekend.
Really enjoyed the format. Purge those shelves!
Slowly but surely we will get there.
What a lovely (and let's be honest, corageous) video! Very happy the "Out"-book is out of sight 😉
Hahahaha. It got sooooooooo many comments.
I'm amazed at the way you kept all of these books organized! I might try read one buy one. lol
Oh there were A LOT of edits.
Yes! Try a chapter! I cant tell you how many books I thought I wouldn't really like then was super surprised once I got started.
I shall report back!
Another great video, as always Simon - thanks for the entertainment! I often do the 'try a chapter' thing when I'm unhauling and I always hang onto unhauled books for a couple of weeks, just in case I find the time to give them one final shot before they find new homes. As an aside, I really enjoyed the van apfel girls are gone when I read it in 2019 :)
I’ll report back on how I get on with this Angie. I think some, like proofs or ones I might meet again anyway, I don’t mind getting rid of as they go to the library and find readers who will love them. Some of these though I felt deserved an extra shot.
This was super satisfying lol Also I love doing the try a chapter tag. It's an easy way to find out if a book that sounds lovely is going to actually work for me or not and then I don't feel as bad if I get rid of one.
Try a chapter tags are a big part of my reading all week this week. I’ve just done one this very morning.
Great video and idea of one in one out. I definitely need to apply this to my books and shelves as I'm running out of space 😮 did start to watch live last night but the children begged me to play cluedo with them. Last chance saloon with read a chapter great too. Can't wait to watch book club video with Mel, seems like an eternity ago that I read Grown Ups.
I absolutely love Cluedo so I can completely understand that beating watching me to be fair. Book Club returns on Thursday. It had been too long. The next choice is ACE!
It all went very well. The local library has ordered Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club. I'm first in line when it arrives. Canada Reads last year convinced me that to read it but 2020 had too much darkness already.
Thumbs up for The Last Chance Savidge Saloon. You'll need it when a chunkster knocks several books off the shelves.
True. I hadn’t thought of that. Though I don’t buy many chunksters. In fact two chunksters nearly went. Lol.
Yes I did enjoy the video Simon 😊 like a lot of people I like the idea of read a chapter and see how you go 😊
I shall be. I’ve set some time aside to do it later this week.
I love the try a chapter idea! Would love to see those videos!
It shall be on the channel before the month is up!
The Marlowe Papers is such a great read. And I also enjoyed The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone. I’m always on the hunt for books set in Australia so The Van Apfel Girls satisfied that hunger.
Looking forward to The Marlowe Papers and to trying a chapter of The Van Apfel Girls.
Absolutely love this! It's so interesting to watch your thoughts on the books you're getting rid of. Once I finish uni I would love to build a library like yours full of books I'm excited to read!
Do it do it do it!!!
@@SavidgeReads once o get a steady income I'd adore to start building my library
thanks for such a great idea - I must do the same on my shelves too because loads more come in than go off! really enjoyed seeing your books :-)
Awww thank you. I enjoyed making this video.
Loved this video! I love the idea of the last chance saloon too ☺️
I read "An Unkindness of Ghosts" by Rivers Solomon this month and very keen to get to The Deep soon, such an interesting concept!
I need to get An Unkindness of Ghosts. I feel like I want to read all their work... possibly in order.
Fun video - hope you do more of these in the future
Once a month is the plan!
@@SavidgeReads Yay!!
Hi Simon! I loved this video. Actually enjoyed the 'read it, not read it', would love seeing you actually going through your shelves, the more boring details the better for me, I'm just that nerdy. I can spend hours just going through my shelves, rearranging and looking at them.
Ha. I will film me going through my shelves the next time. If I need to. (I so will!) I shall just dress more appropriately.
I don't know what it is but I love all kinds of decluttering/swapping/"in vs. out" projects across different channels! Books, makeup, clothes, anything. Something about people reevaluating their space calls to me. And I'm so happy to see Sing to It on your list! I've since read and really enjoyed it, although unsurprisingly the longer stories were the ones that spoke to me more (especially the last and longest). But the super short stories were also perfect reading for when I was feeling scattered and drifting away from reading generally. I'll be reading more Amy Hempel and will report back on how her other collections compare :)
I am really, really looking forward to it. I almost bought it in The Strand last January but didn’t and had only remembered the cover. Then you showed it and advance praised it and so I was IN!
yes..definitely give them another chance with reading a chapter.
I shall do. Haha. You’re all enabling me. Lol
Yes to second chance saloon, yes to chunk in and chunk out, yes to haphazard and making it up as you go! The only change I would make would be simply to hold up a pile of books to say 'read' and 'not read' rather than going through each book because I am sure those books will appear in hauls/ vlogs/ reviews. Having said that I do like to know why you picked up the books! It's your thing so do with it what you will. I now have to watch your other videos that explain your shelving system as it seems so complex!
I might just hold up the not read proofs/publishers sent I think. Unless I’ve read them. As they don’t count anyway. I think I still need to go through all I’ve bought and hold myself accountable. And see why I bought what!
@@SavidgeReads great idea! I will watch whatever content you're making as you read similarly to me in terms of range of genres and every video makes me want to read several books I hadnt heard of until you mentioned it!
Love the idea of the “Last Chance” trolley stack. I really liked The Dutch House on audio because it’s read by Tom Hanks. I think you’re being smart by trying to keep your books to the space you have. It gets harder to get rid of things the longer you own them. Ask me how I know - lol.
I would imagine from lived experience. Hahaha.
I do the one chapter of each book I bring home from the library. I very often gave at least 5 or more. After I read the chapters I decide what order I’m going to read them or even if I’m going to read it at all. It really works great. I think you could try it with those 5. I’m sorry you don’t get on with Ann Patchett she is one of my favourite writers.
Oooh that sounds like a fun way of way doing things. Don’t take my Patchett thoughts personally. Hahaha. We can’t all like the same books/authors but that’s exciting I think.
Yes on the try a chapter tag! That way you can tell me if I should read or unhaul the Girl Who Slept with God as I haven't read it either but there it sits on my TBR lol!
Hahahaha. Ooh that’s too much pressure. Maybe you should try a chapter of it this month.
Love this idea. I've been thinking about a system for sulling/keeping track of my TBR. The Deep is awesome waiting (im)patiently for Sorrowland to be released. Love that cover of How Beautiful We Were. Would totally buy that just for the cover
It’s a stunning cover that has some menace hidden in it. I think I talked about that when I hauled it. Have you read Rivers’ An Unkindness of Ghosts.
@@SavidgeReads I have read An Unkindness of Ghosts. Loved it! I have a Discord and a bunch of booktubers and I are going to be reading it next month.
Great video. I’ve limited myself to buy 2 a month until the charity shops open again and I’m trying to give ones I’ve read to friends or charity. 📚📚💛💜💚👍😊
Good to still be supporting. The indie bookshops need it badly.
This video was so fun but also a bit stressful 😂
Sorry it was stressful for you.
@@SavidgeReads Haha that's alright, I'm being dramatic for sure!
Good idea about to try a chapter!
Thanks!
Love it! Looking forward to this new series. I don't know if this is helpful or not, please disregard if it isn't, but Red, White, and Royal Blue is not YA, its actually adult. I think the confusion lies in the fact that the fanbase tends to be people who enjoy YA and the fact that its not particularly "literary".
Ooooh maybe it’s like The House in the Cerulean Sea in that way. Though it doesn’t help technically as it’ll need to go on my import books and those were a nightmare to whittle down further. Hahaha.
I liked this idea and want you to the last chance saloon thing!
I shall be doing that 🥳
i really like the "reading a chapter" idea to see if you like them :)
I shall give it a whirl.
I really enjoyed it! I liked hearing what you e read/haven’t read. The try a chapter tag is always fun to watch because sometimes the synopsis is better than the book and vice verse. I was sort of glad to see you decide to get rid of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone. I didn’t enjoy that one at all. It read far more like mediocre YA than Picnic at Hanging Rock, which is what it’s highly compared to.
Hahaha. I’ll see how I get on when I try a chapter of it.
My eye always got drawn to 'Out' on your crime shelves so I'm happy that you moved it. Definitely try the last chance saloon try a chapter thing!
Ha. I think it’s hilarious how many of you got your eyes caught on that. Had your eye Out as it were.
@@SavidgeReads I thought I was the only person who noticed it! So when you mentioned if in the video I was like 'I feel seen!' Ridiculous! Great vlog by the way.
Loved this video!!
Read it/Haven't was great. If you're anything like me, reading one chapter will mean every one of those books stays. LOL
Hahahaha. We shall see Stacey. I’ve got soooo many books that have come in already this month I’m going to need to be extra tough.
I’d love a try a chapter video. (Although maybe don’t bother with the Ann Patchett...I agree about The Dutch House 😂)
This one of Patchett appeals because of the subject matter and the current conversations that It’s A Sin has started.
I like the try a chapter idea. Was hoping that you'd maybe give the books you decided to unhaul a chance over the course of the following month.
I think that’s probably what I will do. I filmed that a week and a bit ago so I could try a chapter of them all tomorrow. Maybe.
so much fun to watch!! The Deep is SO worth reading and its very short. Question: Do you read graphic novels? 😊
Yes, the last chance saloon sounds good and then maybe read the first 30 pages?
I’ll see how I get on each one that’s for sure.
I fully condone cheating, loved this. Looking forward to next month's video and I hope you feel okay after the vaccine now :)
I wouldn’t say it was cheating... just bending the rules a little. Lol.
We That Are Young is AMAZING. I think your Mum would like it too. Sorrow And Bliss is interesting and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts. Don’t listen to our podcast on it yet because spoilers. ;)
I was spookily thinking that it might be a Louise book too. I’m shocked it didn’t end up on the Women’s Prize longlist that year as seems a Women’s Prize kind of book too.
I always find culling the books really difficult, I don't have nearly as many bookshelves unfortunately. The one in one out is a good way to do it if you can be strict enough.
I was strict enough. Ish.
I like last chance saloon, but with the rule of having to read it in the same week you do the try a chapter - instead of putting it back on the shelf. And I think it would be fun to read it in the same video and then at the end, let us know if it was worth it!
Oooh I like that idea though I don’t think I can do that with these five in February as Chris I had picked my TBR and next week I’m matching my reading to the glasses I read with. Hahahaha.
I would have to do at least 3 chapters if the chapters are short and yes yes try them i feel awful if i get rid of a book and i have not tried it. Love the video...
Oh I don’t feel awful. If I want to read them in the future there is libraries and bookshops and the like. Lol
All The Young Men- powerful and emotional read
She’s phenomenal isn’t she?!?
@@SavidgeReads she is amazing! Those nurses at the beginning should be ashamed! X
Yes. People are often scared of what they don’t understand though sadly.
😳 Simon ! I’m not sure I’m going to cope with not seeing OUT in the background Aaargh 🤪🥴😉
Hahahaha. I know change can be difficult. But sometimes it’s for the best. Lol.
Defo full shelves.
Heading that way. Though a few empty ones. Lol
Ooh yes I love a try a chapter video - good one to try and unhaul, I'll try that!
Do you have to unhaul from the section you're putting the book into though? Can't you unhaul from any shelf? Might make it easier for you!
Would make it easier yes. But too easy and basically I won’t do it. Hahaha. Also would ruin my shelving system. The books have to be on their rightful shelves and something must come off those shelves to make space. Those are the self imposed rules. Ha.
@@SavidgeReads yep mine absolutely have to be in their rightful places too!! I totally get that 😁
I’m pro try a chapter/last chance saloon! Culling books is so hard!!
It is to a point. You can always get books again from libraries etc. Lol.
Forgot to join in live as I was too busy reading!! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Nothing wrong with that
Really enjoyed this video, and yes, absolutely try a chapter before getting rid of these books. By the way, how do you dispose of these books? With charity shops closed and the library not accepting donations for now because of Covid, I'm struggling to unhaul books myself.
I’ve got them in bags in the spare-spare room so that when libraries can accept books again that’s where they will go.
@@SavidgeReads makes sense, thank you!
Love these sorts of videos and I'm looking forward to more of them from you 😊. Very happy you've had your meeting with Michelle Pfizer, hope everything went well.
I get why you're going by genre/section but I feel like it should be allowed to expand your imported fiction at the expense of other genres? I personally am trying to read more from outside the US/UK so it seems a shame the amount of them on your tbr has been capped. I guess there's no cap on how much of them you read, could just have a higher turnaround. I've talked myself out of my point haha, maybe something to consider though?
I’m confused. My imported books are from America and Australia generally. It’s not books set in other countries just publishers from outside the UK. I hope that makes sense.
@@SavidgeReads Oh right sorry, I completely misunderstood. I guess my point about unhauling the books you want to read least first, no matter the category, still stands but this does make it far less potent. Oops
I am very jealous of the space.... Any space...! I might have to be brave and do a massive cull.... :(
See a cull as a positive. I always feel a bit better after. And don’t feel it has to be massive a few here or there can help over time.
@@SavidgeReads Yes that is teh only way I can do it, but the problem is every time I throw something away you cannnot see a dent because of the books I am buying in place! :D
Patrick Dewitt (French Exit) is Canadian so should really be on the imported shelf.
But the book is from a UK publisher. It’s only the books from imported publishers that go on those shelves. Also if I started having to sort them out by country I think I would have a melt down. Hahaha. I’ve a lot of shelves but I’m not daunts.
@@SavidgeReads Aww, I see. Sorry, just looking out for one of my favourite Canadian authors.
Did I spy The Push on one of the proof shelves? I read it last week and thought it was fantastic. I also spied One By One by Ruth Ware and the Will Dean books on your crime shelves. I read One By One last week and thought it was also great. And I just finished the latest Will Dean, The Last Thing To Burn, and thought it was really incredible although a tough read. Maybe you got a proof of that one. All highly recommended.
You did indeed spot The Push. All the proofs are safe. Anything by Ruth Ware is also Safe. I have all of Will’s books and have yet to read a one. Lol.
Simon you missed out the Melinda Salisbury or was that February not Jan?
That was February! Lol. I am very strict with rules and shelves of incomings each month. Ha.
I’m doing a similar thing with my books each month, but books I’m removing which I’m not sure about I will try the following month as I’m worried about getting rid of a gem.
I’m going to be trying them. That was the concern us on the the premiere chat and in the comments.
Blackmoor has been on my reading list forever. Did you like it?
Yes very much. I’m a big fan of Edward Hogans books, his second novel is one of my favourite books.
@@SavidgeReads thank you.
Only comment i have is ... Should you be wearing ppe when so close to a precarious book tower!? :) Love this idea, I tried the same... But got 3 in 1 out (wahey!) :)))
Hahaha. That’s tickled me on two levels.
Yes, get rid of Van Apfel Girls. The picnic at hanging rock hook was intriguing but it isn’t.
I’m going to try a chapter. I was thinking when filming ‘did Anna get me this, am I an awful person?’ Ha.
@@SavidgeReads haha I did but before I’d read it - only because of the Picnic reference. A lesson there always read first. 😆
Sorry I'm late to the party !!
Never to late to a Savidge Reads party! They are here forever.
How long does it take you to read a novel?
Depends on the novel. A 690 pager took me 5 days with work being bonkers this week. Then a 290 pager took me less than 24 hours as I was off work. So there’s lots of factors but normally 3/4 a week.
@@SavidgeReads thank you! Happy reading:)
55 😳
Yup.
34 😳😳
Yup. Gotta keep the industry going. Ha. Next months is less... that I bought.
@@SavidgeReads So jealous ❤️
The Girl Who Slept with God, was not very good IMO.
Ooooh noted.
