  • In today's short video I fix the carbs on my 1986 Yamaha Phazer. At the time, I was unsure of what exactly caused the issue, but a few days later, it suddenly clicked: the dowels that the floats hinge on had backed out, causing the floats to skew and wedge themselves shut, disallowing sufficient fuel flow. The dowels are ever so slightly tapered, and need to be lightly pressed into place, I was not aware of this the last time I cleaned the carbs and they inevitably backed out, causing this problem.
Of course I just HAD to pick the coldest day of the season to do this, cause why not, right?
Working on a short riding video, we have a few days left of snow, and then it's nothing but rain and low 40s for the next week.

Hi I noticed your plastic boost bottle that connects and balances the intake is missing. It will just suck un metered air.

Wow!! I had the same sled years ago. I miss the thing. But damn, first pull to start it!!! I seriously was amazed. Great video.

Yep, they are damn good sleds, they sold millions, so thankfully there are still plenty of parts floating around to keep the classics running.

Thank you, I grew up on a 1984 model that unfortunately bit the dust in 2014, I received this 86 for free as part of a special deal, it's nice to be riding on my childhood snowmobile again.

That's basically what happened here, just make sure the enrichment jet (choke) is fully closing, and if that doesn't seem to change anything, you may just have to pull the carbs off and go through them. Check compression, should be 90 at the very least, anything under is top-end rebuild territory. Oil mix is a very hard thing to explain and understand through text, I suggest finding a video showing how to determine the mixture based on smoke and smell.

@@KirkB_ Good to hear, The Mikunis on these are very sensitive so they need to be cleaned reeeal good. I strictly run ethanol free in mine and they still eventually gum up.
