The coach didn't take him out with the triple double plus 9 steals. He sat out the fourth quarter because the Celtics were ahead by a lot. Coach asked him if he wanted to go in and get the 10th steal, and he said no, I've done enough damage.
This is a great example of why his stats aren't better than they already were. He didn't care about stats. He only wanted to win

@@darkwolf1202 That killer competition from the greats made Larry better than most younger people are willing to admit. 👍 They won't even normally give him a chance and watch old footage of him. They can't be bothered. They know he can't be that good but he IS better than that and will blow their minds IF they'd just watch. Two letter words can be big words and carry great significance. Seriously, the man was great. Up there with all of the best and they knew it.

That game where Bird was one steal away from a quadruple double, Bird checked himself out of the game. Later he was asked why he didn’t stay in and get the QD? Bird told them he could get a quad double whenever he wanted, we were up by 20, no need for me to be in the game.
John Stockton said his rookie year when they were playing the Celtics in Utah, that before the game started Bird walked by their bench and said, “I feel good tonight, I’,m feeling like 43 tonight.” Larry scored his 43rd point in the 3rd quarter and checked himself out.
Bird was an insane trash talker who could back up everything he said.
He was warming before a Knicks game and was banking in 3 pointers, a trainer for the Knicks saw him banking them and said bet you couldn’t do that during the game….Bird said 5$? Knicks trainer said you’re on. Celtics were killing the Knicks, and Larry checked out in the 3rd again. He forgot about the bet. Danny Ainge was by the Knick bench, and the trainer told him to tell Bird he wants his 5$. Ainge told Bird what the trainer said. Bird checked back into the game for like 4 minutes and banked in a 3 point shot and then checked back out. Dude was worth millions and but made sure he won his $5 bet……lol.

Bird didn't care about stats, unless it was just to mess with his teammates. He wanted to win. He volunteered to sit out on the possibile quadruple-double game. The coach asked him if he was sure he didn't want to go back in. He didn't. He wanted his teammates to get the time.

The 80's with Bird and Magic, the 2 best all-around players of all time, was amazing.
As for who is the GOAT - first someone needs to define what makes a particular player the GOAT.
    Some say Jordan - why?
If you want to talk about championships Bill Russell won 11 championships in 13 years of playing.
Scoring? - Wilt Chamberlain once averaged 50.4 points a game for an entire season.
Points per game over career - Jordan is first at 30.12 points per game, Chamberlain is 2nd at 30.07 points per game.
People say Bird could not jump - if so, how did he averaged more defensive rebounds per game than
    Kareem Abdul-Jabber
    Hakeem Olajuwon
Shaquille O'Neal - just to name a few.
Why was Bird harder to guard than Jordan, because Bird never stopped moving, always thinking ahead and planning his next move.

James Worthy's comment about how he would rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird makes sense when you think about it.
    - Worthy was an athletic player. (who was voted #1 on his college team, which happened to also have MJ on it)
-MJ's typically made guarding him an athletic contest, so Worthy, at least, knew what he had to do to defend against MJ. He would either be quick enough or he wouldn't.
-Bird, on the other hand was the 'mental' to MJ's 'physical'.
-Impossible to predict (Ridiculous IQ), he always had a different plan and you basically had to figure out a new 'puzzle' of what his plan was every time you faced him.
-If you made one small mistake, it was over and he got the bucket.
-That's why there's a saying that goes: "Jordan would make you feel slow. Bird would make you feel stupid".

What really gives Larry his claim to G.O.A.T. status, aside from all the points made here, was his ability to play through his injuries like no other. One injury rarely talked about is his hand. Larry Bird played his entire NBA career with a shooting hand index finger shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations have failed to straighten it; he can bend it only halfway to his palm and was an injury he sustained after college. You can clearly see the finger at 28:07. I suggest watching the Untold Story of Larry Bird and the 5 times Bird played injured. It will add a lot more to other viewings of Bird when you know why he was motivated to play through any adversity. Remember he was always trash talking and used to call his shots to taunt the other team.

Let's see: Rookie of the Year, 3 straight MVPs (regular season), 2 Finals MVPs, Founder of the 50/40/90 club (multiple times), won the 3pt contest three straight years, got a triple double while shooting with only his left hand majority of the game, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year. No other NBA player can say they have accomplished these feats. Not saying he's the GOAT, but anyone saying he isn't top 10 is absurd. James Worthy said, "I'd rather guard Jordan than Larry. Jordan made you look slow, but Bird made you look stupid." Pat Riley said, "If I need a shot to win a game, I'm giving it to Jordan. If I need a shot to save my life, I'm giving it to Bird."
Edit: If Bird had not came into the NBA, it never would've become the monster it is today. The issue was the NBA was predominately black, and there were no real rivalries.

Jordan led the bulls to an 11 game turnaround and lebron led the cavs to a 17 game turnaround. And what did all 3 have in common on their rookie seasons. Neither one had their best teammates yet.

Luka is Bird 2.0....with two significant exceptions. Bird had the tenacity of Jordan, and demanded the ball in any winning situation. Bird played against himself more than against another. His trash talk was to get others to play harder to pressure himself into more impossible situations. That kind of killer mentality is rare......Bird (confidence/ability), Jordan (confidence/skill), Kobe Bryant (skill). It's rare to see that kind of player today. unfortunately....... Bird retired not because he thought it was time, but because he didn't feel he was giving the organization the worth that he provided....due to injuries.

NBA today is soft. Bird played when you could be physically resistant. If players weren't allowed to touch Bird like in today's rules, he would drop 60 like Covergirl. Easy breezy. Facts.

Fun Fact: In 1985 I believe, Larry Bird dropped a near Quadruple Double: 33 Points, 12 Rebounds, 10 Assists and 9 Steals in just 3 Quarters.
Edit: I think the enemy team injured bird out before he could achieve it but idk

Nope. Bird came out because they were so far ahead. When his coach realized that he was one steal away from a quad double he asked if Larry wanted to go back and get it. Bird said, "Nah, it isn't fun anymore."

I love Jordan and he is in my top three..... Bird, Jordan ,Magic. But Jordan never beat Larry Bird and Larry beat Jordan a few times. Jordan got revenge on every player that ever beat him except Larry. And Larry beat every great player of his era, including Jordan.

Kareem, Bird, Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, Wilt, Russell, Olajuwon, Duncan, Roberson, then Magic, LeBron at 12...I don't think anyone playing with today's rules can be in any top 10 because of how weak the defense is. There is a real argument that because none of today's players were tested with the brutality of the, 80s and 90s....it disqualifies them. Jordan should never make top 2 pick (which is a shame because he was that good).... like it or not, three of his championships were assisted by the NBA and that should disqualify him, the case for bird is he saved NBA, was more of a all around team player, coach of year, executive of year, level of difficulty of his championships combined with Jordan simply not having to play under the same rules at crunch time. The NBA was saved by Larry and Magic show, when they were gone the NBA needed another savior and that was Jordan....when Jordan came back to NBA, the NBA made sure he won. I would love to see LeBron playing under old rules, its realy unfortunate for him he was never tested the way the players were tested in the greatest basketball era.....but I doubt he would have lasted anyways. I have bird ahead of Wilt and Russell because the competition was considerably stronger in the 80s

Luka is a poor man’s LarryBird, Bird would eat him alive, and lock him up on defense too. LarryBird would figure out Lukas tendencies and actually exploit them. Btw, Larry could beat Luka at the three point line TODAY. You can’t compare the two, or any other player to LarryBird because he was MVP three times and runner up four times, he was also rookie of the year which they left out.
