When Walton first got to Boston one of the first things he did was go to Robert Parish's house to tell Parish and make sure that he knew that he didn't want to take his starting job away from him, that he was there to come off the bench and help them win a championship.

The true greatness of the Celtics was the way they played as a team. As the ball moved so did they to be in the right place to get a pass and/or take a shot. Winning and not individual stats were what was important and they did what they needed to do to try and win every time. Yes, Bird demanded that of his teammates but he also set the example and worked as hard or harder than the rest to achieve that goal.
A great player makes those around him greater if they play the game correctly and that is what Bird did.
Another way to look at how great a player Bird was and how he affected the team is to look at the 88-89 season where Bird only played 6 games and the Celtics record was 42-40, their only season with under 50 wins while Bird was on the team .
In Birds first 7 seasons the Celtics won 61 games or more 6 of the 7 years. The season before Bird the Celtics were 29-53.

I think D.J. is the most underrated. Bill Walton might be the biggest Bird fanboy ever though. If you want to see something funny watch "Bird event." It was a fundraiser for his college and they dedicated a statue of Larry. It starts out with the usual coaches, college players and then they bring out a few of the Celtics.
It immediately goes sideways. Walton says that the college president sent a bottle of whiskey to his room. I believe Walton had finished it before he got on stage. He tells one Bird story after another completely cutting off the poor host. In between he keeps telling us how much he loves Larry.

This was an amazing team. The best passing team ever. Bird won his third consecutive MVP and his Game 6 against the Houston Rockets has been called the greatest game he's ever played. After the win and the winning the title, coach K.C. Jones said "Larry has reached the pinnacle of basketball. I defy anyone to tell me there is a better player in the world today." Great reaction as always bro!!

My favorite thing about that team was seeing the ball go from halfcourt to an easy layup on 6 pretty passes, and the ball never touching the floor. Grace in motion. They had to have worked for hours in practice on "no dribble/no travel".... that's what i call it, anyway. I grew up an hour from Boston and watched from age 7-20 during bird's career

Man, McHale vs. Parish is a tough, tough call. It really depends on what you're picking them for.
If you're picking a team for a game, or a series, or even a season, I'd go with McHale. His peak value was higher than Parish's, and he was just unstoppable in the low post. He only had about 8 good years, but for those 8 years, I'd put him on about the same level as guys like Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, and Dirk Nowitzski. I wouldn't rank McHale as high as them on the all-time list of great power forwards, because he didn't last long enough at that level, but I think that's the class of player we're talking about.
If you're picking for a franchise, so you need players that you're going to keep together year after year for as long as possible, I'd go with Parish. Parish out-hustled almost every other center in the league, and he lasted forever. He was an excellent rebounder and a good, opportunistic player down low. You could make him your center, and know you could pretty much pencil in about 17 points, 10 boards, and 2 blocks a game for 18 years...
"Superfluous" means "extra and unnecessary." So like, if you wore a belt *_and_* suspenders, then one or the other would be superfluous, because you only need one of them.

Just for a little Lakers/Celtics rivalry fun. The Lakers bought all but one of their titles (Magic's rookie year), while the Celtics only bought one title (08' Title) winning all the rest organically. 😉
Northeastern is a great school. The late, great Reggie Lewis went there. I'm sure you made the right decision for yourself tho, heck, Boston winters are brutal.
Another fun fact. The fast break was created by the Celtics, and used to be called "running a Boston" It has always been the Celtics identity since the start of Red Auerbach taking over. One thing the Celtics always had thru the decades was big men that outrun other bigs (until the Danny Ainge small all era). We all saw a revival of Red's Celtics in the 2008 =2012 seasons with the most recent Boston big 3.
I'll leave the rest of any questions to others or my posts are going to be a damn book lol. Great vids man!

Larry Bird and the Celtics started my love for basketball. Every time they were on TV, I was watching. Every second, even if they were down, hoping for Bird heroics. I would immediately go outside and start shooting, dreaming of being like him. By high school, I realized that I would only grow to 6’ and any chance of being Larry-like was gone. Still did a junior research paper on him and his Celtics, though. He remains my favorite athlete of any sport.

You looked puzzled by the picture of Bobby Orr. He was the greatest hockey player Boston had or probably will ever see. He was a great two way player. That picture of him flying through the air was captured after he scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. His banner hung over the scoreboard in the Garden. He also had career ending injuries. Larry said he always looked at this banner before a game.

Even the short highlights are good, but doesn't quite manage to convey Bird's level of sheer WTF on the court that day.

I have this team as the best ever, but there's a couple of Lakers team which are close. The Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1987 Lakers team come to mind. I made sure to watch every Celtics/Lakers games during the 80's when they were the two best teams. I think you nailed it on the head... TEAMWORK...that's what makes a great team! And you can't just go by the number of wins. So many players on this team could come through when it mattered, whether it be shooting, passing, rebounding, setting picks, fast breaks, etc.. Hard to beat a team like this. Damn, they had Bill Walton coming off the bench! Besides having an MVP season in the NBA, he was one of the best college players of all-time at UCLA. In his sophomore and junior years his team went 30-0 with two national titles. The consecutive game win streak ended at 88 after he hurt his back. But overall the 1986 Boston Celtics team is definitely in the top 3 of all time, and in my book, number one!

I am from Rhode Island and was 15 in 86. This is still the most prepared team i have ever seen, including as the best passing team. Bird's leadership had everyone always in the right position. Overlooked is the tenacity on both ends of the court. Everyone sprinted back on defense, and had a full team running the fast break.

Ahhh young grasshopper! Your wisdom increases each day! You now have seen the light of great team lead by ninja legend!!!! You seek answers to many questions, yet let me guide you to a completely different aspect you have not considered! Red Auerbach was without question the greatest architect in the history of professional sports. As coach and General Manager he won (sit down for this one) 16 NBA Championships!!!! He led the Russell/Coussy Celtics to 9 titles. Then had the foresight to grab Bird as a junior eligible. AND as one of his greatest, craftiest moves, secured the top pick in the 1987 draft! Let me run that by you again SLOWLY! Red Auerbach pulled the trigger on a transaction that secured the number one pick, the same year as his club submitted an all time juggernaut season!!!! Len Bias, was a young man from Maryland, with an incredible talent that would have secured Boston's future fortune's for a decade to come! He truly possessed athletic skills that would undoubtedly brought the 87 Celtics to even greater heights. Sadly, he (Bias) decided to celebrate his great fortune to join the NBA's reigning champions by partaking in cocaine. He suffered a fatal heart attack the night he was drafted. Along with Birds back injury. This spelled the beginning of the dwindling results of the late 80's into the early 90's for a team that deserves a much better place in history....

DJ and Bird had practiced what they would call their "secret play". It was called secret because they hoped no one could figure it out for a week or two. It was practiced for about three months before they put it in use. There is the secret pass shown after his number was retired on this pass. I hope every one enjoys it.
Most of the footage is DJ number 3 being retired (before his death).
DJ worked the Celtics as a scout and coached a minor league team. He died of a massive heart attack now nicknamed the "athletes heart attack". Sudden Irregegular pulse beat. .
Another super star who died in a pick up game was Pistol Pete Maravich.
I believe Reggie Lewis also died on the court during a pick up game.
CPR would not have saved all of them. Their hearts had gone into sudden irregulae heart beat.

Dennis Johnson won finals MVP with the Sonics in 1979 as their hyper-defensive slasher shooting guard. He had slowed down quite a bit by the time he got to Boston and the arc of his shot flattened out too, so he was more of a post guard than a slasher and his outside game was only mediocre much of the time, but he was still extremely clutch late in close games. Often teams would double off DJ leaving him open on the theory that DJ had the worst offensive stats of any Celtics starter, but with about 5 minutes to go in the game, DJ would always lock it down and start hitting almost every shot he took. He would be like 2 of 9 in the first 40 minutes of the game, and then go 5 of 6 down the stretch to finish the game 7 of 15 with 5 clutch buckets in crunch time.
The greatest play of Larry's career is probably the steal and assist down 1 with 1 second left in game 5 of the 1987 ECF - and the guy who was alert, intelligent and clutch enough to cut to the hole, receive that pass and hit the contested layup with 1 second left to win the series, was Dennis Johnson.

Hi - Your comments about how and why the Celtics - who clearly could not match the athleticism of Michael Jordan or "Nique" Wilkins - were able to prevail over the Bulls and Hawks was because the the unmatched team play of the Celtics was spot-on. The Celtics were the absolute best in those mid-80's years at having players that were unselfish and committed to winning over personal stats. Each of them did everything on the court to make their teammates better - passing, double-teaming, rebounding, running the court, finding the open man every time, and giving their all when they were coming off the bench (ala Bill Walton). They were unmatched at doing this, which is why they were the best team ever.

I remember in high school coach made us watch game film of this team to show what good team basketball looked like. That's how he wanted us to play. I remember being mesmerized by the way they played. I had never seen basketball played at that level. I grew up just after the Bird-Magic era. I grew up in the Jordan era. But what was different was that this Celtics team epitomized what team basketball was and how to play at the highest level possible. Even watching Jordan, I had never seen a superstar do what Larry Bird did. Yes Jordan averaged more points but a lot of the reason for that was that he took a lot more shots a game than Larry. I think Larry could've averaged around 40 ppg for his career if he would've played that way, but that wasn't him. He played the game like it's supposed to be played, imo, and would routinely pass up a good shot to get his teammates great shots. That's why he's #1 in my book.

The 1986 Celtics had a deep bench as well. Scott Wedman started several games while McHale was injured. The 1987 Celtics basically played 5 guys 40 minutes each. The best matchup would have been the 1986 Celtics vs the 1987 Lakers. Which was Magic's best team.

Wilkins was saying this; I Ask Some Young Players This Question Now & Then: "What Would You Choose If You Could; Would You Rather Be A Great Athlete OR A Great Player? Wilkins said Most would Choose, A Great Athlete & I Would Tell Them NO. A Great Athlete Will Get You Some Ooo's & Aww's BUT A Great Player Will Get You Wins & That Is What Larry Bird Was".

This was a TEAM: a GREAT team, full of greats with many and varied talents. I’m 74 and have never witnessed anything like this in any era, before or since. And they played with other greats: Dr. J, Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Dominique to name a few (please note they don’t need full names, even nearly 40 years later!). I don’t watch basketball anymore. It is not the same because it’s no longer about the TEAM; rather, it’s about stars. Boring! I’m happy with these memories.

    Wow Kevin Mchale
    Wow Robert Parrish "Chief"
Wow DJ (at that time he was my favorite Celtic) Was a Former finals MVP before he even got to Boston
Danny Ainge This guy drove me nuts at the time. I considered him somewhat of a "chucker" then. But obviously a great player in retrospect.
Wow Bill Walton a former league MVP before he got to Boston (Walton might be considered amongst the all time greats except for some debilitating foot or ankle problems)
Groing up as I did in this Era in the Boston Area. I personally believe that this might possibly be the best Pro-Basketball team ever assembled. I believe they could go toe to toe with any team from any era and be victorious.

Five season tickets in a family of seven sort of sucked and I tended to get left out a lot but not the this one. Larry was like a hologram you looked away and then he was somewhere else you didn't look away and he was somewhere else. I never saw anything like it. The fact that it was 102° in there cuz it was no AC in the Old Garden didn't even matter.

Obviously a bird fan. Although I always admired the way bird and magic could be best friends off the court but you put them on the same court on opposing teams and their friendship didn't exist. My main reason for loving the 86 Celtics one of the things that I'll remember always is watching Larry Bird out jump Hakeem olajuwon that's locked in my brain. The 86 Celtics were without doubt one of the greatest teams ever assembled but for all their talent for all their strengths what made them the team they were with birds leadership and birds absolute intention that everybody had had all time everybody had touch if he didn't think they had enough touch he made sure they got it he wasn't a grandstander. He was The ultimate team player. That's why as far as I'm concerned he's one of the top three goats.
