dude! This is my fifth class and i must say this course of yours is sooo good and easy unlike many others. really helpful; clear pronunciations; detailed explanations; step by step; amusing way. ❤ Highly recommended!
how has your korean journey gone so far?
Indeed, his way of explaining is so easy.. I learned so much by watching only 5 videos ❤
@@cupidre1 well, at that time my vacations were going on so i spared a lot of time but honestly ever since, i havent even looked at my notes or taken any other class. dont wanna discourage you guys just sharing my personal experience.
As Korean, He is a so nice goood amazing teacher!
짱!!!(zzang?) -> Great!!
This series is the best present a beginner korean learner can get! It is much better than even paid courses! Great Job Billy!!!!
you deserved a like from billy
It's been a year since ur comment. Can u speak koreanese now?
@@jmoravek8 yea kinda, I can understand like 70-80% of most songs
@@pancake7417 ahh nice. I'm only about a month into learning Korean, so I have a long ways to go!
@@pancake7417 what about speaking
Reuploaded to fix a tiny typo at the very end of the video. The slide said "Vowel ㅅ" instead of "Consonant ㅅ." Everything else is the same :)
Thank you so much, I always had a problem with this ㅅ I didn't know where I should pronounce it as "s" and where I should pronounce it as "sh" but you made it all clear for me, Thanks a lot💜
Fun fact: I didn't even noticed until you said
On episode 4, while showing the two new syllable blocks, the second one (with the vowel in the middle) says that the first consonant should be on the top left. It may be a typo, but I don't know if many have noticed.
@@grim5113 Thanks for noticing that! Yes, it should simply say "Top." However in this case since it doesn't affect anything as there aren't any other "Top" spaces anyway, I'll leave it unless someone finds a mistake in that lesson which I could fix together with it.
@@GoBillyKorean Cool beans! By the way, I'm loving the series so far! I'm getting the first (or first two 🤔) Korean Made Simple book(s) soon. I hope the book(s) will give as much insight as this video series :D
These videos are seriously a lifesaver. This is the first time I've been able to hear the differences between all the vowels. Thank you so much for this!
“It’s kind of like someone punching you in the stomach” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was for sure one of the most challenging classes so far for the amount of vowels, but super funny!
facts i feel like giving up😭
As a native Hindi speaker, some of these pronounciations are really easy for me. Like the eu vowel(simple horizontal line), it sounds just the same as one of the vowels in Hindi. Thanks for the videos, Billy :))
YEAH
As a native Hungarian, it is extremely easy for me as well, we have the same sounds! (we write ㅡ as ö, ㅗ as ó and ㅜ as ú)

I just realized that "으" kinda sounds like a disgusted "UGH" 😂😂😭😭

Are you fluent now?

This is so helpful! I casually learned to read 한글 a few years ago as a teen but never learned it "properly". The sound differences are so much easier to tell apart now! And I'm glad to know the proper stroke order now as well in my own writing. Glad I started from the beginning of your course instead of skipping ahead. Thank you!
after learning all the way from the first lesson to this lesson Im actually able to read, "well then, see you again next time" at the end of your video in korea without even realizing :O
Just yesterday I watched 현우 산생님's video, the one where you visited him on your last day in Korea and I felt like I fried my brain. 😂. So I could "hear" the difference, for example when you said 영 and 용 but I couldn't hear the difference when I "said" it, but now I see that 오 is a somewhat more base sound than 어. So thank you very much for that Billy.
Let's keep learning guys!!!!!!!
Thank you so much❤ I’ve started learning Korean 5 days ago. This is the most difficult lesson for me, but I’m grateful for your free lessons.
Grazie😁, I traveled aboard in Australia and now it has almost been two years since i've been here, I want to do the same in Korea, so within 2026 i will go there for one year, so thanks for these lessons, they give me a sight of hope ❤
I just wasnt learning on duo lingo and i gave up but i found ur course and im doing so mych better i write my first word (gangnam) today and i literally cried so hard thank you so so so so much. Ive been trying to learn kirean proficently for so long n now it feels possible
This is incredible, this series is honestly so helpful, thank you so much
so happy found this channel.. so challenging to memorize the letters, grammar and pronunciation, wish me luck and Thank you Billy.. 🙏
You are absolutely brilliany Billy. Thank you
i love this course so much!! thank you so much!!
this ones very challenging, have to keep playing this on repeat for the first couple minutes. having fun tho!
Thanks for sharing your very informative videos,,more vlog to come 😍😍godbless sir Billy kureom tamiteoba🙏🙌☝️
14:08 omg thanks. now i know why it went shi on some and si on some. got it. omg thanks for clarifying.
It is so helpful thanks big brother ♥️
Hello Teacher , the way you teach is perfect. Thanks a lot :)
If I tell about your Korean Lesson Serious in 3 words,"you are superb"❤❤
01:14 "But they do sound VERRY different" BRUH I'm going crazy here they sound the same!!!!!
"ㅗ" sounds more like an actual "O" with rounded lips. If your lips are rounded like that, it'll make the "ㅗ" sound.
As a Dane, some of these pronunciations that others have to practice more, I find extremely easy since they are almost pronounced the same way as letters in my language:) Like 어 is pronounced like å, 으 is pronounced like æ so it’s very easy to remember for me
this one was so helpful to me
Great video. Thanks
Similar to Hindi so able to get the vowels well. Thank you Billy.
Lesson 5: recognizing, reading and writing ✅
I had no problem hearing the difference between ㅗ and ㅓ, but I struggled so much with remembering (으) I still sometimes get it wrong😭🥺
Hey Billy loving your classes so far making my pronunciations better and one more as an Indian I'm akso a native hindi speaker ofcourse you said don't romanize Korean sounds as they only create confusions plus we don't have the English alphabets that fit exactly the Korean pronunciations but I feel if I connect the hindi sounds we have in our language with the Korean sounds I feel better..
As for 어 we have ऑ
for 우 we have उ
And many more which make the same sounds.... thus it's easy to differentiate between Korean sounds...all thanks to you what a clear pronounciation you have!!!
You are a lifesaver thank you so much this helped me alot
Great job billy ❤
I'm so happy i found you!! 🥺😭
Thank you 💓
thank you!
thank you!!
This one was intense 😅
This lesson was difficult, but knowing Romanian and Russian helped me with some sounds that are not present in English :)
If you are an Indian so it is really easy to learn this hangul what is consonant cause the pronunciation are same as our swar and vyanjan it was really easy but it is also confused because there are so many pronunciation and other type of work but some are similar to each other so this is why it is little bit confusing but if you will concentrate then it will be very easy and thank you for this series Billy ...
it is super easy and it is also so helpful that is a good thing...
Highly recommendable ...😊
Thank you.😊
People usually don't believe me when I tell them they do sound different, but they do! After some years of practice I can clearly hear it.
Wow this one is dense, I think I've watched it over 5 times now just to get a hang of everything
Gosh, what would be really great is if I had these videos in supplement to a brick and mortar class with you. haha.
I found some very intelligent, skilled tutors out here but they all seem to share that hardcore pile of homework mentality OR! just chat a little for whatever amount of time I pay for.
What I mean to say is that you strike me as a teacher who has the patience to work with an ADHD student that struggles greatly with the subject.
it's too hard even for a beginner so i need to re-watch it again 😅
료 nearly sprained my tongue 😂
It might help to think of it as 리 + 요, just said quickly together, because originally that's what ㅛ is (just ㅣ + ㅗ).
@@GoBillyKorean That DOES help thank you so much! 🙏
ok like i thought id be able to do 2 vids a day but this one had a lot of info. ill just take my time and memorise all these vowels before watching the next one
Please take your time! The most important thing is that you're learning the material, and not just making your way through these videos. If you're practicing along the way, you'll be much better off by the time you finish, and will actually be able to use most of it when you're done :)
@@GoBillyKorean thanks for the reply. im only at vid 22 rn and i rewatch the vids if i feel like im forgetting something or if i didnt understand something fully. your videos really are great
I'd die for you Billy
i have watched this soooo many times but cant seem to get it in my brain. i know 80% of hangul but struggling with mainly these ones. I know how to say like hello/goodbye/goodnight and basic things like that but my memory is like a potato XD
I would never forget the "WHY two lines?" from learning to read Korean in 5 mins lmao.
thank you so much for making these videos. they’re super helpful. i have a question though! is it bad to write sounds in my notes? like beside ㅔ i wrote “eh” to help me remember. i pretty much have a sound written next to everything i’ve learned so far.
For the individual sounds it's fine, but just make sure you're not doing that for any words :)
Hello. I am going slowly through this series. Love all the work you put in! Question on this video. At 9:35 why is the second example sounding like YAH? It seems I am hearing the vowel and not the consonant?
nevermind... in the repeat at 10 minutes I did hear the N
love you
I always say that ㅓ sounds like the English word awe. Is that a good equivalent for that character?
Oooohhh Billy! (spoken like Jim Carrey in the Cable Guy)
I think by knowing Hindi it is bit more easier to learn korean as in hindi there are different letters for these kind of different sounds 😌😌😌😌
The way I learned, the vowels in these two words are pronounce differently. In the word for pen 펜, it takes on the same sound as English. But the word for dog 개 the sound is similar to the a in "hay" but shorter like in "cat" if that makes sense. I've heard some of the vowels combined with W have no real distinction when pronounced. So many subtleties in Korean, some more important than others.
Originally they did have a slightly different sound, but now in Korean they're officially considered to be the same sound so it's no longer necessary to teach them as separate sounds.
So I've been wasting my time trying to keep these separate? At least I'll save time going forward. New subscriber as of yesterday and enjoying your channel!
@@GenHornhead Probably :D I also learned them a bit differently back when I first started (18 years ago), but they're no longer taught that way anymore.
going to Korea next June.... wish me luck. I think learning how to read can help when trying to find a place, name of foods, numbers etc. I was so lost last time I went to Japan. We couldn't read anything. so I imagine that if I learn the name of places or food or numbers I will be able to read them. I have a whole year. lets see what happens.
wow i did not know about ㅅ becoming sh when vowel ee is applied
So what’s the different between “ㅗ”and “ㅜ”??
For me, the confusion isn't between 어 and 오 but between 어 and 아. To me they sound very similar and it took me a while to get them straight.
Have you ever been to a Korean book store? Do you know how to order a book at a store in Korean?
5th Video of my Korean Language Class.
Hi Billy! I am great up until this video. I'm struggling with remembering the pronunciation of some of the vowels. Do you have any tips on how to tell them apart?
It will just take time. Don't try to fight it or stress yourself out about them. Once you start learning the language and grammar, and listening to more Korean, they'll come more naturally to you. In the beginning, there's not much you can do until you have enough experience hearing them and using them yourself.
flashcards are really helpful :))
is it possible to use the ㅇconstanant twice? for example양 in order to make ("Yang")
Yes :)
Hello Billy, I noticed the omission of 서 in this presentation does it have it’s one rule or was this simply a mistake?
This video couldn't include every possible syllable with ㅅ as there would be too many - it's only a few of them.
Hi 😁 thank you for all of this. quick question: In my notes from the first couple of videos, i wrote that there would be 14 consonants and 10 vowels, but as i got through this lesson, I've written 14 vowels in my notes. Do you know, am i making a common mistake in how I'm counting which ones are vowels?
ㅣㅏㅓㅔㅐㅑㅕㅗㅜㅠㅛㅡ
My keyboard is missing two of the vowels you taught, but it includes 12. Maybe i should go back and watch the first video to see if my note about 10 vowels is wrong. Thank you!!
The number is just the "official" count (which doesn't include double consonants or diphthongs), but if you know all of them in this course you've learned all of the ones you'll need to speak Korean :)
@@GoBillyKorean thank you!!
Damn so good rn
Amazing effort. Thank you.
I have a problem differentiate between ㅗ ㅜ
I had those problems before tho when I tried looking at the alphabet again. It did not confuse me anymore.
i need help, at this point i have 14 vowels and 10 consonants, can you help please
Thanks Billy for telling that trick for ㅅ in the end,as I was confused when to pronounce it as 's' & when as 'sh' !!
But can you tell me the trick for ㄴ which is sometimes pronounced as 'd' in beginning & sometimes as 'n'.& Also for ㄹ which is sometimes pronounced as 'L' (English alphabet) & sometimes as 'r' in beginning ?
Please reply!
All of those (and more) are covered in this series after just a few episodes :)
@@GoBillyKorean O... Okay! Thanks for replying!
Me who punched my stomach to know that sound 💀
14:36 It seems that 's' doesn't only turn into a 'sh' sound, but that for most of the pronunciation in the bottom row the 'y' sound disappears as well. Is that correct? And is that always the case? [So for example instead of "shyu", you said "shu". I think I could only hear the 'y', when you said the last one, i.e. 'shyae'. Hope I am making sense. :)] Thanks!
You want to avoid romanization for this reason, among many others. It's not going to be consistent since it doesn't match with English. It's best to listen with your ears and not try to equate it with the English alphabet.
Hi Billy, is 오 pronounced as OH or WU in English? Sometimes I hear Korean people pronounce as OH, other times as WU, thank you.
Can you give me an example of what you mean?
It’s OH. But there’s a well known exception with the word 삼촌 (uncle). Everybody pronounces that as 삼춘.
@@GoBillyKorean @Learn Korean with GO! Billy Korean Hi Billy, thanks for your reply. I use Google translate and the number 50 in sino korean system sounds like' wu sip', instead of ' oh sip', and the same goes for any numbers starting with 5, 50,500, 5000...
@@wanderspark 50 is definitely “oh ship” and not “wu ship”. Maybe because the “oh” is spoken so quickly/briefly, so you’re not hearing it as expected.
It’s pronounced like a double O as in boot, shoot, etc. imagine pronouncing the “u” sound in “pull” alone.
This is amazing! But I'm having trouble with the ㄴ ; it sometimes sounds like d. Any tips to learn the pronunciation?

Hey can someone pls solve my issue actually he said at the beginning vowels are only 10 but now he is teaching us a lot of vowels pls tell me asap😅😅
That's just the "official" number, but as you noticed there are also diphthongs (two vowels combined). The same thing happens with consonants. You don't have to worry about the "number" since it really doesn't matter. If you learn all of the ones I teach, you'll know all of the ones you'll need :D
Hello billy, I have a question. What means 대하다? And how i can use it?
This series will teach you how to use both ~대해(서) and ~대한.
@@GoBillyKorean what episode?
@@nikolekyt3812 It's best not to skip ahead, since everything is taught in order. But you can find it in the episode about how to say "About."

안녕하세요 Billy I have another question what does this sound make료 I get confused because it sounds like dyoo sound can you please help me 🙏
It simply sounds the way it's written, but it will take time and practice to be able to make that sound quickly and accurately every time. Just make sure you're practicing what you're learning, and exposing yourself to plenty of Korean along the way.
Thank you 👍💖
Great job love it I'm using it to teach my son the language!!
Easiest way to learn
So the vowel combination not discussed was 서 as in 서 울. I thought I heard someone say "sh" but wasn't sure.
That's not a special rule. It's just 서울 (not "sh").
Hi Billy, is 료 pronounced dyo in English?
Sounds like ㄹ is making a d sound here.
ua-cam.com/video/2-4ShB33Eu4/v-deo.html
Why this lesson is so hard 🥺
I did not understand fourth one previous lessons it was called L now the pronunciations is completely different i cannot write in romanaization as it will not make sense but confuse on that though
Romanization should be avoided since none of these letters will match with English :)
9:38 i have a question here
i thought ㄹ was pronounced w L or R this sounds like D and i’m so frustrated i don’t know how to pronounce this!
ua-cam.com/video/2-4ShB33Eu4/v-deo.html
__ is pronounced like the 'oo' in "look"
Hello I have a question why dose 냐 sound like ya but not nya I'm confused can you tell me please billy
ㄴ is not the same as an English "N," nor are any letters the same as English letters. You'll just need time and practice to help your ears adjust to the different way these sounds are made in Korean :)
Thank billy 👍
Thank you 😊👍
If you know Hindi , it's very easy cuz all the vowels are similar to hindi vowels
Do 먹어보기 and 먹어보는 것 have the same meaning?
No. Literally, they're similar but not the same. In this course you'll learn both of those forms. They're what's known as "Nominalization" forms and I also have other videos about that on my channel.
9:34 shouldn't be "niya"?
