- This circuit of the Cruachan Horseshoe takes in the two munros of Ben Cruachan and Stob Diamh. The clockwise route starting with the top Meall Cuanail gives and enjoyable ridge walk with stunning views.
The cloud inversion just added a wee bit magic to the start.
Really enjoyed watching this video and well done for making it. This is a serious walk especially in winter conditions! I did it on 26.3.2022, a glorious sunny day and could see the whole route ahead. Some tricky icy areas though to scramble over.
I travelled out on the Glasgow-Oban 975 bus and got off at the Power Station at 1100. Long haul up to Ben Cruachan, stuck to the ridge to Stob Daimh then followed the faint path down by the gorge and was back at the start in 6.5 hours, with over an hour to wait for the return bus. Great day out and achievable by public transport.
Hi Frank, A long day you had and sounds a lot more epic than just turning up by car. Ben Cruachan is a terrific ridge walk and needs a bit of focus when tackled in the winter. Many thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie.
I love the way you've inserted the photos of the same route from 2016 when the hills were covered in snow!
Hi Jakollee, The tops are so different in many ways through the winter. Glad you enjoyed the contrast. Cheers, Charlie
Great video, so glad you posted it as when I did this it poured all day, failing to clear as forecast. Great to see what I missed on the day. Thanks
Fantastic video Gents. You had stunning weather for it. I do love a good cloud inversion , they all ways look so dramatic! 😀⛰🥾🏴
Dave, It's fantastic walking through cloud into clear sky as it adds just a wee bit more magic to the day. Many thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie.
Another smashing video Charlie. I did the Cruachan horseshoe a good few years ago, in similar conditions. We bivvied on the ridge and witnessed the most stunning sunset. Great memories. Keep the videos coming!
Hi Roy, Sounds as if you had a superb overnighter on the ridge and gathered memories that will last for ever... great stuff. Cheers, Charlie.
Stunning day. This was my first ever Scottish summit along with my dad. Gr8 memories
Hi Steve, this was one of the early ones I also did with my dad many moons ago. Cherished memories... Many thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie.
@@charliemccartney7055 I live in New Zealand now, where there are mountains foe ever, but Scotland is a very special place to me. In New Zealand we do not have the same access to the mountains as you do in Scotland. So much private land
Looks like a day for shorts. My last munro, 'Derry Cairngorm', done in November 2005, was done in shorts. I could not stand long trousers except in the coldest, hypothermic conditions.
As usual, Charlie, an excellent video. Climbed this magnificent mountain -- but it's really a range of mountains -- back in 1995, but from the east, beginning near Dalmally. Did all the tops -- so it was one of the most tiring days I have ever had hillwalking. Thanks for posting! :-)
Hi Rosa, Completing the four munros in this group in the one walk is a route we have talked about for a while and still to do. I always enjoy this area with being my first munro adventure back in 1983... now that is scary.. where has the time gone. Cheers, Charlie.
@@charliemccartney7055 Where has the time gone? I have no idea, but if you ever find out, let me know. :-)
Epic Charlie..... what a fantastic day you had absolutely stunning.

Hi Charlie cracking walk on a cracking day love the cloud inversion haven't seen one of those for a many a year I think Ben Cruchan is up there as a classic horseshoe round well done looking forward to the next video clip 👍
Hi Phil, I agree it is certainly a classic walk particularly if you catch it during the seasons. It's just great getting sunbathing weather on the tops for a change. Cheers, Charlie.
Last time we tried to climb up there we encountered gale force winds and had to turn back, magnificent conditions for yous guys.
Hi John, It's always a mountain that is better left for stick on weather to full enjoy the experience. Many thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie
Another walk to the list … Great video 👍
Hi Kenneth, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience once to get around to it. Certainly worth trying to keep it for a good day to take in the whole experience. Cheers, Charlie.
Great video Charlie.Really is a fantastic circular route.😃👍
Hi Andy, The circuit of Ben Cruachan is always a super day particularly with terrific weather. Many thanks for taking a look. Cheers, Charlie.

Hi Wolfgang, Hope you are well.... As you saw we had a cracking day, warm with no wind which gives plenty of time to stroll and soak in the views. Certainly a day to remember. Cheers, Charlie.
Incredible footage, many thanks for sharing, need to head to those two soon,
Hello, Many thanks for taking the time to view. Just pick your weather day when planning your day as it's great to get the whole experience of the tops without clag. Cheers, Charlie.
Brilliant Charlie, Fantastic views. The dam looked very atmospheric in the mist and the cloud inversion was spectacular. I'm jealous of the weather you got! :P Was good to see the contrast between summer and winter as well. Another brilliant film, cheers! Kris.
Hi Kris, It was certainly a cracking day and the cloud just added to the experience. We had all weather combinations on this ridge but it great getting a sunbathing day. Cheers, Charlie.
Nice film Charlie Ben Cruachan is my favourite Munro the views you and Mike got were brilliant mate. PS @9:32 that's a first Mike getting tired ha ha never thought i would live to see the day :))))
Hi Peter, My slow pace is finally getting Mike dragged down... I think he was fed up waiting... lol. We had a super sunbathing day which isn't all that common for us. Cheers, Charlie.
Absolutely stunning!
Hi Fredrich, Glad you enjoyed our outing on a cracking day. Many thanks for taking the time to view. ATB, Charlie.
What a day! You don't get many like that in Scotland. Great video.
Hi Mike, Your right days like this are too few but absolutely stunning when you can catch them. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie.
Superb Charlie. Cruachan is such a great mountain! One of the few Munros I have done twice. You got a great day for it. 👍
Hi Andrew, Your right, Ben Cruachan never fails to give a good days walking and worth trying across the seasons just to see how much it can change. Cheers, Charlie.
Great video Charlie; what a superb day! I really enjoy watching all your videos. I particularly like how you clearly display the route and the possible alternatives. It is a big help in planning, or in this case brings back pleasant memories (of a misty October day). The photos of other trips are great too: seeing the hills in different conditions. Ben Cruachan must be quite a challenge in Winter!
Hi Martin, Ben Cruachan gives a totally different experience in winter and is probable just the right distance for the shorter winter days. A super group tops for all seasons.
I wish I had access to youtube channels when I initially started as its certainly a good resource when planning routes and assessing the landscape beforehand. Cheers, Charlie.
The hollow mountains , did this in the mist so got no views , glad i watched this and seen what i missed,👍
Hello, Its a pity you didn't get the views of this classic walk but you've got a good reason for a return visit. Many thanks for taking the time to view. Cheers, Charlie
Superb👏👏
nice day for a nice walk.
Hi Barrie, We had a cracker of a day and enjoyed being out in warm, calm conditions. It doesn't get much better... Cheers, Charlie.
The fog around the dam made for a great atmosphere there. Looks like the rest of the walk was spectacular!
Hi Guy's, It was just one of those days that don't come along to often and having it on Ben Cruachan was a wee bit special. Many thanks for taking the time to view. Cheers, Charlie.
Brilliant Chaz, cracking day for it mate. Nailed it. 👌🏼
Hi Robin, It was a stunning day. We actually were looking for shade a one point now that doesn't happen very often on the Scottish tops. Cheers, Charlie
@@charliemccartney7055 we were out on Sunday, sat on the summit for 40 minutes just soaking up the rays. ☀️This weekend looking like it could be a bit wet. 🤔
Brilliant Charlie and really amazing quality of footage. Lived this hill when I did it and enjoyed another wee visit! Cheers paul
Hi Paul, We've had quite a few different weather conditions on these hills but certainly great to steal one of your blue sky days.... lol. Cheers, Charlie.
The Force is still strong in you two 😀 Great stuff... Stunning views 👍👍
Hi Moses, Great stuff, I like it..... the needle is certainly coming away from strong but there is life in the oldies.... lol. Cheers, Charlie.
@@charliemccartney7055 Ha Ha you and Mike are still the benchmark for us lot here, no worries. Thanks for uploading Charlie 😀👍
Always enjoyable watching your videos 👍 we’re off to do the South Glen Shiel ridge on Saturday, but have got these two on my list this summer cheers 🙂
Hi John, The weather is looking settled so hope you have a stunning day in Glen Shiel.... remember the midge repellent as they are on steroids up there. Cheers, Charlie.
@@charliemccartney7055 thanks for the advice. :)
One of my favourites Charlie
Hi Andrew, Yes, it's a walk that's high on my list and always worth doing both summer and winter. Cheers, Charlie
Stunning Charlie. I was on Beinn Achaladair that day. Could see the inversions further West. Nice comparison to winter anaw. Cheers 👍
Hi Kev, Was that not a cracking day with all the tops clear for miles. It was surprising just how think the cloud was when we arrived having driven through sunshine and clear blue but it all came good in the end. Cheers, Charlie.
Really enjoyed your vid. I must do that..I will do that...thanks very much
Hello, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the walk when it comes round. Suggest you leave a good day to fully enjoy the experience. Many thanks for watching. Cheers, Charlie
