Met Mr Gaillard at a jazz festival and he talked to me for over an hour about his life and famous bebop musicians, he kept talking and I kept buying him drinks it was wonderful and he was a lovely man
I met Mr. Gaillard in London, waiting for a bus outside the Selfridges Food Hall, where he had been buying bagels at their Jewish deli. Presumably to dunk when he returned home. He invited me to his performance that night at the Chelsea Arts club where he had a residency. The man was a multi talented genius in several fields, from music to linguistics. A Jazz giant with gigantic charisma.
I met him at the Chelsea Arts Club (mid to late 1980's). My dad was a member and knew him. I'd go for Sunday lunch quite often and he'd be there at the bar always dressed in a sharp suit looking very cool.
Slim had his career reinvigorated after Dizzy Gillespie found him washing dishes at ernestine Anderson’s jazz club in 80’ or 81..I was there when he called George Wein and said something like ‘ I found Slim Gailard’..mr wein immediately got a summer tour together and slims career was back on track ,he was the toast of the european festival scene until he passed away..

Slim was a composer, vocalist and player of many instruments, all of which he did wonderfully. I was born too late for this great music! Pair him up with Slam Stewart and the sky was the limit!
I met Slim many times, initially for interviews and photos. He was an amazing guy. I remember once I was photographing him in St James Park with Buckingham Palace in the background (because HE was royalty!). He was dancing for my camera, playing fantastically with his hat. It is forbidden to do professional photos in a Royal park. So when I saw a van full of policemen approach I got a bit worried. They had seen Slim. All they wanted to do was line up and ask for his autograph! I loved that man.
There is a documentary here on UA-cam where he explains his birth place as Cuba. I think he is so missed and under rated. What a genius! We play Slim on 78's regularly. My kids cant eat a Potato Chip without singing. (look it up if you do not know that one very catchy) He is my favorite jazz musician. Funny & talented.
I remember Slim even though I was just a little kid when he died. Slim was so hip, he had difficulty seeing over his pelvis. And Slim was so cool, you could store a side of beef in him for a month.
Bam Brown on bass, a very comical sidekick while he lasted. Kinds ended up going crazy, but sure was funny in his day. With Scatman Crouthers on the drums, this was quite a trio!

Pickled herring-o-rooney…. I can only love it. Most any food song is worth a listen and the fact that the bagel goes Smash! in the coffee more so. A lot of Slim & Slam, and Slim & Blam are on cd with great stuff from USO shows.
Most likely.... Donuts are eminently more dunkable in coffee than bagels! Slim also combined matzah balls with gefilte fish, when they belong in chicken soup.... "normally"....

It happens like that. My family is 100% not Jewish, but my father grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx and loved Jewish deli food and knew every type of Jewish deli food like an expert. I remember as a kid, instead of a Snickers bar or some other candy, he'd go into a deli and get half a pound of vanilla flavored halvah, and they'd wrap in up in wax paper and tied it with a string and that would be our big treat. Still love the stuff, but it's harder to find nowadays.
why can't we make songs like this nowadays? people always talking about having girl/boy friends and those about sex and material things.. talk about the simple things like dunking bagels in your coffee x)
