  • If you are going to change the lifters on an LS engine you have to get some bits out of the way first.

    Nice one bud its refreshing to see one with out the yank bs chatter.
    Very helpful insight into both the take down and the parts that wear.

    As I had low oil pressure in my 6L LS engine in my truck, I took the whole engine out. Found that the middle camshaft bearing had spun out. I never took the heads off. But when I changed the camshaft and bearings i wondered how to get the lifters out. I was used to being able to do so when the intake was off on the old small block and big blocks. I had the engine upside down to change the camshaft and bearings back then :)

    And this is called improvement over the old style where all you did was pull the intake and valve covers?
    Glad I am just an old guy nowadays...

    I pulled the lifters out of the LS1 in my VY Commodore eventually last weekend,while additives & engine flushes may have cleaned the varnish from the lifters & their bores,it didn't stop some "mushrooming" from happening to the lifters,the offending lifter that turned out to be ticking for most of the time was one of them on cylinder number 6.
    I think the exhaust one was hardest to get out on that cylinder & the hardest to remove of the whole lot of them.
    So,I'm replacing the whole set of lifters not before replacing the timing chain as it has a bit of slop in it,the pain in the ass is the oil pan gasket that I replaced 5 years ago needs to be replaced again as the oil pan needs to be removed to remove the oil pickup tube,the oil pump needs to be removed to replace the timing chain.
    I can't get access to the bolt which holds it onto the oil pump so it needs to be removed, while some people drop it down about an inch ,there's no guarantee that if the oil pan is bolted back up with the old oil pan gasket reused, it's going to leak & the mating surfaces where the rear seal carrier & timing cover meets need to be resealed with RTV sealant.

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup  5 років тому +1

      The factory lifters are pretty limited in their lifespan...The worst ones I've seen had worn the pin out that the roller runs on...Good luck with it Russell.

    • @RussellBooth1977
      @RussellBooth1977 5 років тому

      Yeah ! mine has done 337,512 kms but the car has lacked oil changes in the past I think.
      The now default LS7 lifters for the LS1-7 engines are a lot better,apparently !!!!

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup  5 років тому +1

      Strangely enough the lifters are the same as the ever faithful 3.8 Ecotech.

    I just replaced one of the lifters on an LS engine in a cop car. Its a lot of work.

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup  8 років тому

      +1970chevelle396 I've seen them so flogged out that the needle rollers gave up and the car only had 100;000k's/60'000mls on it...Quite a common thing to happen...3 fragile spots on an LS..lifters,,piston skirts and rear crank seal plate warping to leak like a rear seal failure...Other wise they are a pretty stout engine.

    • @1970chevelle396
      @1970chevelle396 8 років тому

      On the cop cars they have Active Fuel Management Lifters. It drops it down to 4 cylinders if you drive it real easy. Those lifters go bad all the time. . Im not sure why they would ever put those kind of lifters in cop cars. They drive them real hard, so it will never drop down to 4 cylinders.

I got the whole car for a steal so I’m not really worried about it just want your experienced opinion on how long she has left to live and if there’s anything I can do to keep her going! @ZIGgassedUP Please HELP ME!
    Could the valve oil lifter causes knock? besides the sound i mean when i monitor my engine on the scanner it says knock present:yes
    if not why there is a knock in my ls1 ? i tried everything (replace a\f sensors, AirMass, Spark plugs, higher octane fuel, replaced the knock sensors them self) by knock i don't mean the sound of a knock, the computer says that knock is present! and the performance is affected.
    tomorrow i'm removing the heads to replace valve oil lifters and clean piston surface.
    please any idea what to do?

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup  8 років тому

      The knock sensors detect knock from detonation/pre ignition...Usually what happens is the pin in the roller lifter fails and it presents a bottom end rattle...I've not seen lifters set a "knock" situation to the PCM but I guess it's very possible but the failed lifter will have a definite rattle a bit like worn wrist pin and more so when it's cold...Good luck with it mate..

    • @kinan990
      @kinan990 8 років тому

      so what do you think should i do next ?

    • @ziggassedup
      @ziggassedup  8 років тому

      I saw that you've done a 6-8 swap...How many K's on the engine...The lifters usually fail around 100,000K's I've found...How were the plugs when you pulled them out.?...Is it lean.?...Vacuum leaks or poor fuel supply will lean it out...When you say "performance is affected" what do you mean.?...Hard or easy to start..stumble of misfire..or is it in
      " limp home" mode.?..I gues the check light is on..If the light isn't on then the problem is other than an electrical vomponant...I'll go look at the vids there may be something there.

    • @kinan990
      @kinan990 8 років тому

      Today i checked everything again, also cleaned the fuel injectors.
      hook up the scanner again when it's cold first start the scanner displays that knock is not present... after 3-4 minutes it says knock present, removed one spark plug and checked with a camera scoop the surface of the piston looked clean, the last thing i wanted to know is: if the valve lifters are ticking, does the knock sensor detect it as a knock?
      and thanks for your reply :)

    • @kinan990
      @kinan990 8 років тому

      i mean that performance is affected because when the pcm detect a knock via a knock sensor it will hold back the performance.
      there is definitely no misfire no lean/rich no leaks nothing!
