I never knew this game existed until I saw this video. It was never in any arcade in my city, and I never heard about any of the home versions. Luckily it doesn't look like I missed anything.
I will admit that when I first played this game in the arcade I thought that you were in control of Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner. That was until someone corrected me. Then I could not get enough. Once again Patman another great vid. Keep them comming.
Patman is becoming like the cool gamer Uncle I never had, everytime I think I know every arcade out there he always brings back a arcade I never knew about (Ninja Gaiden and now Road Runner) Now I look forward to see what forgotten arcade game I can discover and try to add to my phone rom games.
Atari Games has always been owned by Warner. The Consumer division was sold to Jack Tramiel who ran it into the ground. Warner kept the Atari Coin Op division.
Loved this game as a kid, had it on the Amstrad, but only ever saw it once in arcades. Gutted there was never an Amiga port, but as it was a US Gold release, it would have most likely been a lazy Atari ST port that ran slightly slower. so probably dodged a bullet there in hindsight :D
It was pretty widespread in the area I grew up in. The same can be said for gauntlet on the Amiga, never received a port of the original but it Probably would've been just a lazy ST port
There were a few secrets in the game,. Wile E. ran faster than road runner's walk speed and a bit faster than 2nd gear, but can't catch 3rd gear, but if he goes off screen, he gets jet sneakers which are faster, but can only use them for a short while. Also, if you travel slow near Wile E. then go to high speed , road runner will stick out his tonuge at Wile E. for 2000 points.
While not an arcade game I highly recommend Desert Demolition for the Megadrive/Genesis. You can choose to play between the Coyote and the Roadrunner, it's very well animated and the sound effects make you think that you are watching one of their cartoons.
Never knew there was a laserdisc version of this. I’m sure my fading memory has me playing with a trackball, either I’m totally wrong or it was a converted cab. The Amstrad version looks like it plays just like the stills from the box. Literally.

A similar version to this is on the Gameboy Advance. Looney Tunes Double Pack - Acme Antics & Dizzy Driving. It's 2 games in one but Acme Antics is similar to the arcade game you just run as the road runner to the right only. Such a underrated game. So much fun.

Thank you for this video. I have nearly forgotten about this arcade game. I recall playing it and simply getting frustrated due to its controls and gameplay. It was fun for maybe a few minutes but quickly grew repetitive. Still would play it though whenever I had the chance.
When I clicked on this video I never even heard of this game. They made an arcade game of Road Runner? So I looked on MobyGames... and I own this game for the ZX Spectrum! Not sure when my dad bought the game but I just never played it. So thanks for the video, it's all falling into place now. The game is alright but the best Road Runner game is definitely Desert Demolition on the Mega Drive. I tried that game over my holiday and it feels like I'm interacting with the cartoon, it's so amazing! I highly recommend Desert Speed Trap for the Master System but Desert Demolition is superb at capturing the source material. Might just be the licenced game most faithful to its source material. 👍
I love the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. I used them for my first pro-literacy skit in TV Production class in High school (I took the course for two years). The idea was that the reason things go so wrong when Wile uses ACME gadgets is that he can't actually read well enough to understand the instructions. I honestly don't recall what the final form of the project was. My original plan was Wile using a remote control aircraft to chase down and disable Road Runner. I actually finished that video but I did so on 9/7/2001 and my teacher told me to redo the project so the plot didn't involve an aircraft after 9/11. I think I was considering changing it to involve a catapult or a giant axe but I didn't like those ideas much. (I had considered and rejected both when I was first brainstorming ideas) However I think I was told no explosives the same time I was told no aircraft which limited my options even furthur, so I might have chosen one of the two for lack of a better option.
What always bugged me was there was another project as part of the same assignment and IMO if mine needed to be changed so did his but he got to keep his as planned/ I have nothing against the person running the project, we were friends at the time, and I was actually part of the projects acting cast. But his storyline involved a group of terrorists taking over the White House and getting the illiterate president to sign a treaty giving them ownership of the US. And I don't see why that was considered ok in the aftermath of 9/11 but my original plan for my Wile E. and Roadrunner skit wasn't. (In fact if memory serves the teacher told me that sticking to my original video would have been an act of treason when she told me to scrap and redo it)
I like this content, its very entertaining and takes back some of that classics most of people played, my favorite video is The History of Spy Hunter - Arcade documentary .
I was lucky enough to try this in the Arcade, and while the game was perfectly fine, my playing was not : ( But for me, winning games isn't as important as playing them and having a good time, even if I can't get past the first level. Thank you for showing us this, Patman~!
I have a memory that some game with the Road Runner was released for Windows (perhaps it was a sequel to this) in the 1990s or 2000s. I recall downloading a free demo of it, but never got around to playing it.

If I remember correctly, one of the issues in the gameplay is that the roadrunner would eat the seed and it would take a few seconds. You would see the roadrunner pecking at the seed. You could leave some seed if the coyote was getting close.

@Analyzing Male Slavery I game on everything but unfortunately for the last 20 years or so I've had a health issue keeping me from being able to sit long periods if I can avoid it so its consoles only for me now. I don't mind too much though because all my favorite exclusives from Nintendo and Sony aren't on PC, nor are all my online gaming buddies.

I used to have this on the Atari ST & really enjoyed it. I was never lucky enough to come across an arcade version of it - but playing it on MAME is nigh on impossible - try as I might with all the various tweaks, the controls are so sensitive! I imagine it would take a replica of the arcade joystick. Great game though, I wish they'd done more of these Loony Tunes games. I often think of this game as Wile E's revenge as it's the only time he got the upper hand!

I'd love to see a video on Firefox. I'm pretty sure I saw the cabinet in real life back in the day, but I can't be sure because I don't really remember it well. It's a movie license with a cabinet similar to Star Wars so it could be memories crossing over. I remember seeing the similar M.A.C.H. 3 from Mystar all the time. Looking at the video, It seems like Firefox might have a fairly immersive experience for the time, but the gameplay might not be great, where M.A.C.H. 3 did something which functioned closer to (but not just like) a traditional shooter with video backgrounds. If Atari's laserdiscs were failing it might be why I didn't see the machine as much during the post crash mid-1980's years, at least in my area, although KLOV lists the game as "Very Common" so it's out there.
We didn't have the sitdown cabinet in my area only the upright But yes, it does look like a great immersive experience. The game is on the list is the matter of getting do it and finding something interesting to talk about
"Arcade hit" you say? Maybe it was in some regions of the country. I never ever seen it in any arcade I've been in. I saw the Nintendo version in Toys R Us way back then, but I had no idea it was an arcade port.
My feeling is, they got the game exactly backwards. The player should have been controlling the coyote and trying to catch the roadrunner, not the other way around.

I had the C64 version from a compilation. As you know, we mostly used tapes for games in the U.K. and the tape loader for this one was painfully slow, which spoiled the game immensely as you had to load each level separately, and that included reloading the first if you die on it. Not good.
Road runner and coyote were my favorite Looney tones cartoons. In retesting thing is DC comics and the Looney tones crossovers. They had Elmer fudd and Batman as one of the crossovers
are there any Lazer disc versions of the arcade game that still exist anywhere? I wouldn't be shocked if Galloping Ghost had one (ill check next time I go)
I believe there is only two that were ever made. That footage from the UA-cam channel I mentioned was taken back in 2010 and every so often the owner will bring it out to gaming expos.
Always loved this game back in the day! i even owned one for a while... it has a great "slippery" feel to the control that you didnt get on any other game. Sadly, it CAN NOT be experienced on any other platform or emulator! The true feel of the game if just too dependant on the hall effect joystick! i have even seen cabinets in classic arcades that have changed out the hard to find hall effect for a traditional joystick. it makes the game nearly unplayable. 😞
Loved this game in the arcade! Not one of my best, but I got reasonably good at it (meaning I could clear the first 3-4 stages at least). But that also means I can’t play it in MAME at all, because I’ve never been able to come up with a control scheme (mouse or otherwise) that even comes close to matching the feel of the original arcade joystick, so all my muscle memory is useless..
I don’t remember this one at all from the arcade or C64. I think my 10 year old and I have a project this afternoon: fire up the 64SX and locate this game!

I think I rented the NES version once. Looney Tunes video games are weird for some reason, but it's nice to know the earliest one was true to the cartoons. Considering the other NES LT games, you have Crazy Castle, which you can swap out any IP and it's still the same game, and indeed it is in certain parts of the world. Then there's Bug's Birthday Bash which also feels generic and the LY license was thrown on it.
The Super Nintendo games at least had the spirit of old cartoons, or at least enough references to them to make the games feel totally unique to the toons. I think Crazy Castle was a Roger Rabbit game in Japan. And at some point, future Crazy Castle games featured Woody Woodpecker.

Loved this game. Local laundromat had it. Any suggestions on getting controls on MAME to respond like the arcade. I remember there being 3 speeds depending on how far the control was pressed.
I have read that he can use a flight stick on the game in the mame Emulator for accurate arcade controls. Not too sure since I don't have one to test it with

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries yes. I got mine for $200 on Amazon. There's roughly 1200 games on it, all arcade classics. Kung Fu Master, all Double Dragons, Bad Dudes, all Pac Man games, Galaga, Q Bert, etc. The MK games aren't all that great, but it's well worth it. You should give it a try! And thanks again for your material. Love it!
The Commodore 64 version was well done, but the music drove me nuts. Who thought it was a good idea to exclusively use the "sawtooth" waveform of the computer's sound chip? It's like listening to angry flies in a plastic jar.
I used t otry to play this on the CPC6128 when I was a kid, we had a TAPE version from some Games Multipack, and it actually loaded once every six months, so didnt play it very often

There have been a ton of licensed Looney Tunes games for various computers and consoles but not sure about the arcade. At the moment, this is the only one that springs to mind

I love that they thought a 4 to 5 second load broke up the flow of a game. Now we have 2 minute loads in the middle of most games.

I was never lucky enough to come across an arcade version of it - but playing it on MAME is nigh on impossible - try as I might with all the various tweaks, the controls are so sensitive! I imagine it would take a replica of the arcade joystick. Great game though, I wish they'd done more of these Loony Tunes games. I often think of this game as Wile E's revenge as it's the only time he got the upper hand!

I played the arcade version at a Circle K in Prescott Valley Arizona on 1986.

I'd love to see a video on Firefox. I'm pretty sure I saw the cabinet in real life back in the day, but I can't be sure because I don't really remember it well. It's a movie license with a cabinet similar to Star Wars so it could be memories crossing over. I remember seeing the similar M.A.C.H. 3 from Mystar all the time. Looking at the video, It seems like Firefox might have a fairly immersive experience for the time, but the gameplay might not be great, where M.A.C.H. 3 did something which functioned closer to (but not just like) a traditional shooter with video backgrounds. If Atari's laserdiscs were failing it might be why I didn't see the machine as much during the post crash mid-1980's years, at least in my area, although KLOV lists the game as "Very Common" so it's out there.
We didn't have the sitdown cabinet in my area only the upright But yes, it does look like a great immersive experience. The game is on the list is the matter of getting do it and finding something interesting to talk about

"Arcade hit" you say? Maybe it was in some regions of the country. I never ever seen it in any arcade I've been in. I saw the Nintendo version in Toys R Us way back then, but I had no idea it was an arcade port.

Every port of this game had the issue of getting stuck in the scenery. Even the arcade version itself. Im convinced it was by design.

My feeling is, they got the game exactly backwards. The player should have been controlling the coyote and trying to catch the roadrunner, not the other way around.
I liked Warner Bros better than the Disney stuff. My favorite though was always Tom and Jerry.

I had the C64 version from a compilation. As you know, we mostly used tapes for games in the U.K. and the tape loader for this one was painfully slow, which spoiled the game immensely as you had to load each level separately, and that included reloading the first if you die on it. Not good.
I only had the disc version But I read that the tape loader was extremely slow. Did not know you had it reloaD it if you die

The funny thing is that coyotes are actually much faster than roadrunners in real life.
Road runner and coyote were my favorite Looney tones cartoons. In retesting thing is DC comics and the Looney tones crossovers. They had Elmer fudd and Batman as one of the crossovers
are there any Lazer disc versions of the arcade game that still exist anywhere? I wouldn't be shocked if Galloping Ghost had one (ill check next time I go)
I believe there is only two that were ever made. That footage from the UA-cam channel I mentioned was taken back in 2010 and every so often the owner will bring it out to gaming expos.
Always loved this game back in the day! i even owned one for a while... it has a great "slippery" feel to the control that you didnt get on any other game. Sadly, it CAN NOT be experienced on any other platform or emulator! The true feel of the game if just too dependant on the hall effect joystick! i have even seen cabinets in classic arcades that have changed out the hard to find hall effect for a traditional joystick. it makes the game nearly unplayable. 😞
Couldn't agree more! I have heard that a flight stick works really well with the MAME Emulator but I don't have one to test it out with.
Loved this game in the arcade! Not one of my best, but I got reasonably good at it (meaning I could clear the first 3-4 stages at least). But that also means I can’t play it in MAME at all, because I’ve never been able to come up with a control scheme (mouse or otherwise) that even comes close to matching the feel of the original arcade joystick, so all my muscle memory is useless..
Apparently a flight stick works pretty well in mame when controlling this game. Unfortunately I have not tried yet

I always wanted the SX. I can recall going to Kmart and playing around with it at the store.

I think I rented the NES version once. Looney Tunes video games are weird for some reason, but it's nice to know the earliest one was true to the cartoons. Considering the other NES LT games, you have Crazy Castle, which you can swap out any IP and it's still the same game, and indeed it is in certain parts of the world. Then there's Bug's Birthday Bash which also feels generic and the LY license was thrown on it.
I agree, there are so many of them you could technically swapout the license with.
The Super Nintendo games at least had the spirit of old cartoons, or at least enough references to them to make the games feel totally unique to the toons. I think Crazy Castle was a Roger Rabbit game in Japan. And at some point, future Crazy Castle games featured Woody Woodpecker.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries yes. I got mine for $200 on Amazon. There's roughly 1200 games on it, all arcade classics. Kung Fu Master, all Double Dragons, Bad Dudes, all Pac Man games, Galaga, Q Bert, etc. The MK games aren't all that great, but it's well worth it. You should give it a try! And thanks again for your material. Love it!

The Commodore 64 version was well done, but the music drove me nuts. Who thought it was a good idea to exclusively use the "sawtooth" waveform of the computer's sound chip? It's like listening to angry flies in a plastic jar.

I used t otry to play this on the CPC6128 when I was a kid, we had a TAPE version from some Games Multipack, and it actually loaded once every six months, so didnt play it very often
Never played it on an actual CPC but I have heard how slow the loading times were
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries HaHa! yea, Legendarily slow, I remember the early Amsoft games always had a line in the Cassette inlay card that said "this game will take approximately X minutes to load" then after reading ones that said 5 mins, or 8mins, I found one racing game that just said "This game will take minutes to load" caused a lot of laughter to my 11yo self..
