Eppadi padinaro, in Karnataka Devagandhari composed by Sri Shudhananda Bharathi was initially popularised by the famous woman vocalist PadmaVibhushan Smt. D.K.Pattammal! The ancient Devagandhari, is popularly known today as Karnataka Devagandhari. It takes Shatsruthi Dhaivatam in stark contrast to the Abheri that takes only suddha dhaivatam. Karnataka Devagandhari may be equated to Bhimplas in Hindustani music. The version of Sri Tyagaraja's Nagumomu that is in vogue today is rendered in Karnataka Devagandhari though it is listed as an Abheri kriti ( muted Aberi kriti) . Muttuswami Dikshitar has composed ‘Veenabheri' in the raga Abheri ( janya of Natabhairavi with scale S M1 G2 M1 P P S S and S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S that was followed by many erstwhile singers incl. MS Amma n strictly proliferated swarakalpana by these notes !!! ) with the usage of suddha dhaivatam. But now the raga structure is known as janya of 22 Melakarta. karaharapriya...S G2 M1 P N2 S/ S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S. In fact D1 is to be used.. But by using D2 it is like using the structure of Devagandhari ( Janya of 22 Mela. of Sree Ragam)!!! !.
Pls note that the another “Devagandhari” (different ragam, an an audava-vakra-sampurna ragam...ie. as janya of the 29th melakartha ragam- Dhira Sankarabharam). Technically the first Devagandhari is popularly known today as Karnataka Devagandhari as said in the beginning, I have no issues if vidwans say that the kriti ‘Bhajare Manasa' and ‘Eppadi Padinaro' are in Abheri or in Karnataka Devagandhari! while ragas are similar and often indistinguishable.!!!.
Here the Suddhaananda Bhaarati kriti- ;Eppadi paadinaro', rightly stated as under ' karnatka devaganfhari' , that is devoid of Rishabam and Daivatham in Aarohanam and with all seven sworas in Avarohanam/ Daivatham is D2) is a class poetical lyrics.. Superb Virutham of 'Thruvasagam Moondram Thirumurai ' - 'Namassivaaya Thiruppathikam' first hymn (composed by the ninth century Shaivite bhakti poet Manikkavasagar). The vocalist presented a melodious rendition...maintained sustained tempo throughout the recital. Lovely tone n diction! .....Best wishes.
