I second james comment. and would add ONLY take dog advice from another SIBERIAN HUSKY OWNER. i have seen so many sheperd owners try to tell Husky owners how to train their dog. PLEASE!!! a monkey can train a Shepard
A couple of things to add: 1. They dig. A LOT. 2. The love to be outside at night. We have a fenced in yard. Our girl loves to sit outside under the stars. And the colder the better at night. 3. Running. Is. The. Best. Thing. Ever. for a Husky. Oh , and they are the sweetest dogs ever.
Huskies like to dig the way most dogs like to dig. In my experience with the 2 Siberia s I've owned its not difficult to train out of them. You put their poop and some cayenne pepper in the holes their working on every day in the yard. After about 2 weeks of doing this daily, they give up and don't really take it up again. I've recommended this to my friends who have had problems with their dogs digging and it doesn't seem to matter how old a dog is either. Works like a charm
Im seriously thinking of getting a Husky, I live in suburban London, and have run Marathons, so "I KNOW its a 10 mile run EVERY evening" with my Husky, my favorite holiday destination is ICELAND too, I "think?" that my Husky, may well truly enjoy, hitch hiking around Iceland with me for a month, I wont feed my Husky "dog food" either, I will give it "raw organic meat" to eat instead,
All sled dogs have obedience problems, where even if they know the command they might decide to disobey it... In an actual artic sled dog team up norther Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland, and Nordic countries. The dogs must be able to disobey their owner who is running the sled. If you're mushing in a blizzard, in white out conditions and the human running the sled dog team can't even see the dogs past the sled, the dogs are basically in control making life and death choices using their sence of smell to find the trail to the next village and food and shelter. Blizzard or no Blizzard if the musher yells out the command to "go left" and the dogs sence danger like thin ice or Polar Bear (and yes the dogs know and can feel if they are about to walk on thin ice) they will go in a different direction away from danger even if the musher yells the command multiple times... The independent agency in making choices, and stubborn nature it an indispensable life saving feature of the different artic dog breeds. Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Canadian Eskimo dog, Greenland Eskimo dog, Samoys, and Lukias. All have this instinct
When our Husky is in blow he loses enough coat to make another husky, but he's a really sweet dog and he loves EVERYONE. Yeah, he can be a lot of work, but he's worth the time.
Yeah we fill our Husky's blow fur into a body pillow sized pillow case just to see how much he sheds and like a week later it feels like it all comes back!
@Leonel Copalcua No, Huskies are not known to be dangerous, but any dog CAN be dangerous depending on how you raise them. In general, huskies are "pack dogs", i.e. they love being a part of a family or a group, so they love people. I got my Siberian Husky when she was two months old, and I taught her to be excited when guests come over, from day one, and she adores just about everyone. She wags her tail and howls/talks when people come over. Very, very smart dogs. As long as you treat a dog with love and respect, and treat them the right way, they are generally very harmless animals, especially a Husky. They love to exercise and be outdoors, and she loves to hang out with my friends/family and play.
I just got a husky pup, he's surprisingly good. he's very easy to train, he's teething really badly right now but not biting anything he knows he's not allowed to bite, he eats three times a day and already knows to pee and poop outside (with a few exceptions of him having diarrhea in the house due to some puppy stress) and he's quickly getting the hang of walks. amazingly adorable and smart ginger husky
Teach me your tricks lol we got our husky pup a month ago (hes now 4 months old) and still having at least one-three accidents in the house daily. It's driving me NUTS.
Ambers Life he's still doing great! he's calmed down alot since we got him. we have a much bigger back yard so he's able to burn more energy and sleeps a solid 10 hours no problem.
Whitney Nonya he was born outside, which is why I'm assuming he doesn't like to do his business in the house. and now that he's 6 months old he holds it in like a complete champ. I tend to sleep 9 to 10 hours a night, and even when he drinks before going to bed he's perfectly fine. I actually got really lucky.
I think I was lucky when I adopted my husky 'Shadow' I got him as a rescue and we have gone through 18 months of service dog training. Shadow is really great and has adapted to his new life with me quickly. He takes my laundry downstairs for me and helps place it in the washer, he picks things up for me that I cannot reach if I drop them. He loves going for our runs (he is attached to my motability scooter. Some days I am really sick and I cannot lift my head off my pillow. It seems that he understands this and he will jump up on the bed and curl up beside me and place his head on me as if to say... 'its ok I am right here for you.' He is well behaved in restaurants and lays down next to my scooter wheels. when in town if I stop to talk to someone he immediately drops down beside me until I am ready to go. I have also taught him other tricks so we can have fun and just play too. He loves to sing 'old mcdonald' and does the eieio part lol. He plays dead and gives me hi5. I can place food on down or even drop something by accident and he will not touch it unless I tell him that it is ok to do so. He loves his chicken feet we get from the raw pet food shop. He has never torn up the house nor anything in it accept a few of his own toys. For some reason he only tears up the green ones we get him. I get he stuff animals and his corner of over stocked with them. He loves his different kongs and we have one that is huge that he will chase around the house. Funny thing is I only fill it with dry kibble but he is ok with that. He would rather eat it out of his kong than his dish. Anyway, that is my experience with my lovable husky Shadow. We have been together 3 years now. He has only escaped twice out the front door and both times he ended up at one of the local pubs but he has not ran out the door since the first 3 months I got him ... still i am cautious as many say that huskies never stop running and I don't want to take the chance and lose him. Oh one thing he does like to do though ... is hit the water that is near us. I had to put a lock on my back gate as someone kept opening it .. reaching over and moving the bolt and letting him out on purpose this has happen twice and both times I had to chase after him on my scooter but he really didn't run. He was more or less playing tag with me and made me follow him to the water where he went for a swim and came to me after he decided that he was done swimming. Anyhow I think Huskies make excellent service dogs but than again all dogs do with the right care and training and love.
chell n ellie Austin all dogs need walks, training. my dog has hundreds of miles of walks, training, guidance and love. people tell me she is soo well behaved, I tell them..she did not come that way@as a young dog she was psychotic😊 not a husky, but all dogs need walks, training, patience and love.
My neighbor has a Siberian husky who is very well trained, doesn't bark or howl, and does get lots of exercise each day. It's very active and it's a very sweet dog.
when we say "exersize" that means RUNNING the husky on a bike at high speed for several miles. walking around the block is not considered exersize to a husky. if you do the bike runs, 3 times a week (plus the reg walks everyday) you will have a calmer husky. an unrun husky is like a teen boy with blueballs!
A tired husky is a happy husky. A lot of their behavioural issues become a lot worse if not taken for regular exercise and no amount of affection or love or food you give them will work as well as letting them run as much as possible :)
I'm so lucky. My Siberian husky is a short haired and never sheds! And she was so easy to train. She knows Sit,shake, stay, come, lay down, jump, and spin. Also she is trusted off leash and never runs off. I'm just blessed
I have a husky. they are one of the most beautiful and majestic dogs. Romeo is his name and he was not that hard to train. yes he has enough energy for the both of us. and he sheds enough hair to stuff a mattress. but I love him to death. we got him when he was two months old and he was the cutest puffball I have ever seen. everywhere we go someone always stops me and says how beautiful he is. he is my rock star.
Good video for those thinking about getting a Husky! We have a 1 in a million Husky that NEVER wanders off. He knows how to open the front door and let himself out. No wall, no fence, and never leaves the yard. He also hikes off leash(no training) including trips to and from the dog park.
Excellent. I've had a number and currently have a 5 yr old female Siberian and a 3 yr old half Siberian, 40% Arctic wolf,10% Malamute. I've raised both from puppies. The alpha thing is most important. Raise them like wolves do.Very loving but firm. Mine do stay inside a lot due to the need for air conditioning in So. Calif. Also, they are happiest sharing my"den." I walk them, fast, on leash, one on each side and next to me, not ahead, several miles a day, including hills. I am 75 and am strong but no longer jog. I take them to the dog park for running daily. They are very social. Mine will talk and get a little noisy when excited but are generally much quieter than the little yappers and the big ferocious pits and shepherds all around us. I think this is because I am quiet and calm. When I go to work, they go to doggy day care and are favorites there. The hair is the biggest challenge. Grooming and brushing and a really good vacuum. The wolf hybrid is less likely to run through any open gate, more loyal, more cautious with strangers and more protective. Both are so sweet and loving and drop dead beautiful. So many stop to comment them, their looks and their manners. All dogs present some challenges. These are totally worth the effort.
I had/ have a Husky. My husband has him and we are separated right now. Huskies are a ton of work. They have a very strong personality. You need to show them who’s boss. They are pretty good socially but like to play rough, so if you bring them to a dog park be aware that other dogs might not like them to play so rough. Also, invest in a good vacuum. All the hair does take a toll on the vacuum.
At one time I had 10 Huskies because my female had pups. You are 100% spot on with what it takes to own one or two or ten. They are intelligent and loyal. They also are escape artists. They love to dig holes to China if necessary. I loved my Huskies and would own one or two again at the drop of a hat. And the fur mounds... Oh my God!!! But still they are the best dogs on the planet.
by far, the smartest and kindest dog breed i ever owend. great with kids too. they are horrible in warm weather and are all about being outside during winter. easily my favourite dogs.
We have the best Siberian husky, he is not at all like your description of a Husky. We walk him off leash all the time, he follows us in the bush about a hundred and fifty feet away. He stays in the yard all days untied, he does a walk around our property in the morning and in the after noon. Whenever he does his walk around he leaves for five minutes and comes back. The only time he is tied is in the evening because of bears. At night he sleeps in the house. He has never destroyed anything in the house even after being left alone for extended periods.
Very accurate description of Husky attitudes and behavior.. We own a Husky that is half Husky, half Lab, named Rocky. Rocky has a shorter outer coat, but he has a full undercoat. When he starts shedding, there are drifts of dog hair that blow around the house for weeks. He is pretty good about staying close now that he is about 10 years old. When he was younger, I had to be very careful about letting him off the leash, because he would get distracted and take off. Now that he's a little older, he always keeps me in sight. I can get pretty far away from him with no worries, as long as no other dogs are around. As soon as I see other dogs, I run back and put him back on the leash. Rocky is the smartest animal I have ever shared a house with, and I would have not other kind of dog now.
We just adopted a Huskador. A 1 year old girl, that's had minimal training. Luckily we've raised dogs before. These videos are quite helpful. Thanks for sharing.
I had an Alaskan Husky. We lost him last year. He was so gentle and quite tame. We just got a miniature Siberian Husky. She is so beautiful but I was shocked at her insame energy and attitued. She is going to be a handful, but I love it. I named her Scarlet after Scarlet in Gone with the Wind. Beautiful and Sassy!
Beyond true! My Huskies know all of their commands and if they had a middle finger, and I don't have a treat in my hand, they would show that middle finger to me. They literally look at me when I say, "come!" and they turn, stare at me and challenge me to give them something to do what I want.
I love my husky. She’s the best. She does shed, is good with only a 7 min walk, doesn’t jump fence. Doesn’t really dig. not loud at all she doesn’t howl. She will talk and yawn. overall best dog I’ve ever had. Only bad thing is the shedding lol
We know soooooo well about Sibarian Huskies! Our boy is six years old, he likes to "run" away from home once in a while! I had to find him on Facebook, because he had gotten out in the middle of the night. We couldn't find him! Thank God for Facebook! He is a runner! He also knows if one of us is sick with a serious illness, well that is true with most dogs and also cats too.
If you collect your Husky's hair durning the blow season, it can be carded, spun on a loom and made into yarn. A textile spinner can perform this process and knit a collectable garment for you in remembrance of your pet. Since husky hair doesn't have a 'dog' odor, it really works well. Spinners will also add sheep wool to the dog hair yarn. They can knit mittens, scarfs, hats and sweaters. A wonderful keepsake of your pet.
#6 Invest in a Dyson vacuum. It has lasted and done very well for the amount of times it gets used a day to clean up Husky fur. I love my Huskies! They definitely are a breed you have to love and be patient with. I've had Siberian Huskies now for almost 20 years. I just like to watch these types of videos to see if they've done anything I haven't seen already lol.
Good video. Have had eight over past 25 years. All but one a rescue or adoption. Yes, they shed ferociously and will run if they escape. And they are true escape artists. Had a full grown female slip through a a fence gap only 3-1/2 inches wide.
So true I have a husky and they are SO much work and we have a ton of land for them to run and play and get active. It's like every single teenage girl wants one because they're pretty, they don't understand how much work and determination it takes to own one.
Everything you said is spot on. I have had GSDs for years, recently rescued a husky after loosing my GSD boy to old age. OMG, these dogs are on a different level. My yard was dog proof, but not husky proof. On the plus side, I got to finally meet all my neighbours(hey, is this your dog), the minus - he is rather alpha with my older GSD lady... We still struggle with dinner time.
I have had 4 sibes. They are great dogs that actually settled down after about age 2. I walk my current pair 2-3 mi ea day, which is good for them & me. My boys are very vocal. They're great with kids & adults. As far as shedding is concerned...I have 2 really good vacuum cleaners. During a couple of combing sessions during their "blow", I got enough fur to create another average sized dog & still had enough left over to donate some to a friend who had it spun into yarn for knitting.
You are absolutely accurate, I grew up with having a beautiful husky/samoyed mix, and I love your tip on the running. We named her Xena, but her nickname was Xena the wind, cause she would be just fine hanging out outside, and I would get brave and let her go from her leash. She would randomly get this look, like, I’m running... I’ll be back... or come find me :)
my husky hikes only off the leash!! :) that way she can run all she wants! she gets so tired at the end but she loves her hikes! she always comes back if I whistle for her and never goes too far
Mine is the most chill husky ever. And he is trained very well. He listens to almost all commands. He is a little bit of difficult off leash but he still knows to listen when I use dad voice. Also you have to get them one at a time. If you get them as a puppy they need to bond with you for at the very least a year and see you as the alpha. That is very important.
Hi, I have to say you are so correct! I have two Husky boys, they know exactly what you are saying and want, its great when they then respond but its always on there terms. I have walked them of the lead when they were younger but not as they have got older. They understand that they can look after themselves and its fun to run after anything moving ! not as much fun for me trying for hours to get them back The best thing is coming home to them and having them greet me. Full of love and naughtiness !
I’ve had a husky puppy now for three weeks and he’s so adorable but the first couple of days was so hard cause the poor pup was so nervous and scared he hates to be alone but now getting better by the day fingers crossed 🤞
S2MH my dog is special he doesnt bark at other dogs he just likes judges them he doesnt bark at squirrels and he is loyal and trained he even has a sister and a girlfriend same color but darker
My boy Chaska is now 10 months old and I have him trained to the point that I can have him off-leash in most urban situations. His main moments of “Husky deafness” is when there’s something he REALLY wants to sniff. Other than that, he listens quite well. Lucky for me, he’s quite food/treat motivated, so I’ve been training him with positive reinforcement with a multitude of treats as he can get bored with the same flavor after a few days straight. Getting to run him with my rollerblades where i can be on the pavement and he can be on the grass is ideal to get his fuel tank down for the day. The one thing I haven’t been able to deal with yet is his separation anxiety. When I leave him at home my roommates tell me that he groans and whines for hours. Grooming at least once a week is a MUST! Be careful not to spoil them or you’ll NEVER be able to go back to kibble! Bottom line, if you get them young, dedicate time to training them, keep commands CONSISTENT, and give them opportunities to socialize with other aspects of your life, you’re going to have a best friend for the next 12-16 years.
I knew all these facts and I am still deathly in love with huskies! XD they're so cute and sassy! I actually fell in love with them from a husky at the doggy daycare I worked at 6 years ago!
I have a Phoenix, but her name is Pax. Best Dog Ever, she'll wake me up every morning with hugs. She actually lays down right next to me, until I get out of bed. Pax, is so awesome! I highly recommend a Siberian husky.. Make sure they come from a good line of breed though. She is very mellow, but when she wants something. she'll let you know, lol..
i have several husky. and i don't have all these problems. they will run away if you don't watch them, they do shed bad. and i do love when they talk. that's what so cute about them. but they are really not that hard to train. they are very smart dogs you just have to take time out and train them. i have had husky s for over 20 years and i love the breed. best dogs ever. husky's are not for everyone but if you do get one just work with them. they are very loyal dogs.
My wife and I are on our sixth husky.... first one a pure bred purchased (by her before I came into the picture) ... second one adopted us .. the rest adopted by us. The second, Jake, was a runner in the purest sense of the word. We’ve had a coy dog mix of husky and coyote (great dog) and our current two are husky/German Shepard and husky/Samoyed. I bought my wife a room a last year for Christmas (I know, very romantic) it does pretty well but sometimes just goes into the closet and pouts.
I got a Siberian Huskey over the summer and have noticed some of this. She does shed but all the floors in my house are hardwood and tile, and she has her own bed so she's not allowed on the couch. I know blowing is going to net a lot more hair, something I'm accustomed to thanks to my old chow chow. He loves the puppy actually, even though he's a decade older. My huskey talks but not as much as I was expecting, mostly when we play. She pretty much only howls when there are sirens (often since I live close to a fire station) and sometimes my two dogs start a chorus that doesn't stop until well after the sirens have passed.... she does need a lot of excercise, I've noticed that, and her personal favorite past time if she gets bored is to terrorize the squirrels in the backyard. Luckily we have a large yard and a tall fence so she's never upended the house yet. Dug plenty of holes hiding her treasures.... Training, yes she is a stubborn girl. She's to the point where she knows she's not supposed to do things but she thinks she can get away with it. And sit, lay, definitely suggestions not orders. As far as running goes, sort of yes and no She'll definitely run away if off leash, but then she'll circle around and come back to you to check where you are before running off again. She runs circles around me and the family at the dog park. Back and forth, checking every once in awhile to make sure she knows where her pack is. One time she ran a little to far and couldnt see me and then she started howling haha (it's a large fenced park, 40 acres and she was having fun with an Australian Shepard), I howled back for the heck of it and wound up with mud all over my shirt thanks to her i love you so much jumping up and down craze. I think she thinks my running after her is a game. learned the hard way. One time she tugged herself out of my grasp while on a walk, and tore off and then she decided to try to jump into a parked car to escape from me, and smacked herself into the window. I captured her in her daze. Then when I tried to get her to go into the car later that week so we could go to the dog park... she refused as if cars have force fields around them. hahahaha But I experimented and rhe next time she got away, when she squeezed out the gate and darted off, all I had to do to get her to return was squeeze one of her toys. Running is a game.
Oh my god.. sound like my 3 month husky puppy!!! Too late to turn back now!! I love dogs so much, it’s hard to put into words but man it’s been tough... but getting better now!! Hopefully even better each day
I have two Huskies and there are so many good traits you forget or at least tolerate the bad ones. Just don't lose your temper and yell and don't hit with your hands. You can nudge them with your foot but don't be rough. They remember.
LOL you are spot on with attitude, shed and running. We have tried and tried to break the pulling on our past and present husky's, we gave up. They WALK YOU! Plus we gave up on cleaning the house, visitors have to just deal with it lol. Good and spot on video :)
I have two girls, one is off leash trained and one isnt, sometimes it's about the dogs personality, when I got my second husky I was determined to walk her off leash, I spent the first 3 months with her 24/7, and because of that she is super attached to me, everywhere I go she's with me, our habit has gotten so "bad" that she is now my service dog because I have terrible anxiety with out her. I take her everywhere, and anywhere. I'm lucky that I don't work because I'm how I'd handle school work and two of them! I attach them to my bike and we ride all around town together. I love these videos I relate so much
There are a ton of huskies available to rescue - there's no need to breed them. People buy them and then can't manage them and they end up in rescues and shelters all the time. Please try and adopt before creating more animals. We have such an overpopulation already.
I have a male husky named Teeko. I work from home, and have the time necessary to train him. He walks without a leash and doesn’t bark/howl too often (except when I leave him). It’s 100% possible to train a husky off leash, however .. it takes an extreme amount of trust and patience. Huskys by nature like to chase prey and be free. By off leashing them and expecting them to stay by your side, is going against every instinct they have. And even once they are off leash trained, I suggest exercising them BEFORE the off leash walks.
We just adopted an Alaskan Husky rescue dog (mix of Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky). I do understand what most people say. I am new to this so forgive me if this sounds naive. However, I disagree with those who say that Huskies are stubborn or moody. They are pack animals who respect hierarchy. Most videos on the internet of Huskies being "stubborn" are depicted with the owner speaking with an inflection at the end of the 'command' (inflection connotes a question, not a command). Also, the owners often speak with a higher pitched voice because they themselves are thinking "how cute". Huskies can intuit your state of mind and emotion and feed off your tone. In our house, the Husky quickly figured out who is a true 'leader' and responds more consistently to that person. Commands with low pitched tones without any cuteness in the tone are often followed without 'stubbornness'. Finally, given their heritage, commands for the sake of entertaining the owner (e..,g roll over, play dead) are pointless. These are very intelligent animals who need a sense of 'purpose'. More than other breeds, they seem to have a 'personality' just like human beings. Anyone who has human kids would also realize that kids can play the parents against each other (follow the strict one and dismiss the lenient one). Kids can't be left alone without supervision, entertainment, and interaction. Kids need quality education and companionship. Huskies are very similar. These are not lap dogs for busy people who can't commit to nurturing their needs. Just my humble opinion, acknowledging that I am new to this and no disrespect intended to those who have are seasoned Husky owners.
i have an Alaskan husky puppy she's starting to shed a lot of fur, ITS EVERYWHERE its even on my bed because when im gonna for school she jumps on my bed and takes nap! but i love her more than anything :)
My girl is great off leash- at the dog park. She stays close to me and keeps checking to make sure I've not stopped or something. However if she gets out at home, different story. What's that human yelling about? I don't know anyone by that name. Who's the human anyway? I'm running, screw 'em. At least the last time she got out anyway, may have changed in the last few years too. At 14 all she really likes is a good nap. And food, always food.
how long must she play outside a day? I want to get a puppy and wondering how much time dedicated to exercise, I cant see myself doing multiple hours a day at a park. but would love to play hard for an hour and let him out in the backyard a bit throughout the day and night
The only thing I really never got to like with my big lad "sash" .hes a massive , pure muscle brute. But beautiful, and so affectionate. But the hair..........OMG the hair. Sash sleeps and lives in the house wit me so I have to hoover everyday. ... it he's so worth it
Thank you so much!! I realize this video is almost 2 years old, but it has helped me beyond words. My husband has a Siberian husky and I have been freaking out about all the shedding. He promised me a year and a half ago that the shedding would only last a few weeks. My husband lied. I haven't had a meal that I didn't find dog hair in it since I came here. Well, at least I know what I'm in for now. Sheesh, I really love his dog but I think it's time he became an outside dog. Anyways, thank you so very much.
It is NOT impossible. I have 6 that I hike off-leash, every day, 3-4 miles. Sometimes I have one refuse to get in the car, but if I start to drive away he will run after the car, and get in when I stop! Guess it is just his way of saying "but I don't want to go home yet!" Great video, very true. SIX that shed twice a year each time for 6 months! And all on different shed schedules! I used to vacuum daily. Now I just sweep daily into a pile. When the pile gets about 18" high, and 2 feet around, I can stuff it into a grocery bag, and dispose of it (or save it and build another Husky!) Have fun!!
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for this video - it helped me greatly before deciding on getting a husky. And now I can't be any happier! :) Your huskies are pure joy!
#6: Huskies can jump. Seriously, this goes into the first Huskies can run. They can jump up to six feet high, we have a breakwater wall around our beach. My dad had my bro's husky off the leash and he cleared the wall... (At around five feet.) and got hit by a car. Straight up, mind you... On their hind legs, they can see over fences also. Don't think because you can keep your dog off leash in a yard they'll do okay for a bit. They can jump high fences.
Yup, I got my 3-legged husky and she ran around and around and around the dog park; then saw a squirrel and cleared the 4-foot fence without even touching it. Then it was her favorite game...run run run, let me get close enough.....then laugh her head off at me like a dingo and run away some more. I had to have a friend lure her with deli meat and tackled her from the side. Now she wears a GPS collar and is always on-leash. I wouldn't even trust her in a tennis court, she'd find a way out and head to Canada, lol.
My huskies stay in my fenced in yard. My youngest husky bikejors and my old husky is 13. I think they are less likely to become fence jumpers if they get adequate exercise.
When I was a kid, I had a Siberian Husky named Neptune. He ran away because we didn't know they are escape artists. I always remember how hard it was to train them, but they are such beautiful dogs.
Three quick notes: 1. The dog's undercoat also protects them from the heat. My Alaskan Malamute was doing a down by the hot fire pit because we wanted a hot dog. We had to pull him off the fire pit. The course outer hair was burned, but the undercoat kept him from knowing his butt was burning. That, or else he really wanted the hot dog. 2. Huskies and Malamutes are very similar. We were able to train our dog to walk outside without a lead. 3. Our dog was a male. The males really need their Mommies while the female is independent and much more likely to interpret a command as a suggestion. We had our 127 lbs Alaskan Malamute for 14 years, and he was the most wonderful dog God ever created.
I grew up in Sitka Alaska and had Husky and Alaskan Malamutes among other large breed dogs all my life. I must inform everyone who is thinking about buying or adopting a Husky or Alaskan Malamute. Do your research because those dogs are definitely NOT for a novice owner!
I love that you call it tumbleweeds!! That's what I call them too. And I have to laugh when I see tumbleweeds blowing across the kitchen not a day after we swept. And the condiment comment made me laugh! I agree with everything you said, mine sure is stubborn.
I have a husky who’s a little less then a year and he drives me crazy but I absolutely love him and wouldn’t trade him for the world it’s so hard to train him especially to make him stop jumping on me. He only listens to my dad he won’t even run from him.
Everything you've said is true. My husky listens great if it's just me and her. if I have company forget about it. She won't run away from me as long as she doesn't get distracted. if she does though she gone lol
Not only do they run but they can climb with ease. I have seen a husky scale a 6 foot fence without any effort at all. I have had two in my life and IMO they are the best breed but, like you said, if you want her/him to do what he/she doesn't want to do look like at you like "Screw you" and walk away
I got lucky with my pup. He has been mellow since a pup. He runs along side me with out a leash. He has lived with me in small apartments all his life. Establish your self as the Alfa and never let them down and the be the most loyal friends anyone can wish for. PS I keep his meals modest and run him twice a day with my bicycle. Huskies will eat and get fat if you don't keep an eye on the feeding regimen. Personality traits are important when picking a husky. Eye contact is very important when picking. A loyal husky will reveal it self through The eyes. Look deep into its soul. I love my husky and will always be a husky guy now and forever. Best dogs in the world in my humble opinion. He is 8 years old currently. TIME GOES FAST CHARISH EVERY MOMENT🐺🐺🐺😊
I recently adopted a husky, i already have her house trained, give the paw, sits on command walks of the leash etc it can be done. I have to agree with the blowing if coats lol disaster it is. But waste not want not i collect it and hang it on my clothes line in my garden for the birds, they collect it for making nests 💖
I keep my Husky off leash all the time. He's very good boy...... unless he sees a deer and then he's gone, but we got a shock collar and one push of the button and he's right by your side. They're super smart and learn quickly.
Great video. I live with a Husky( my roommates) I spend all day every day with him and have for the past 20 months. Your descriptions of them are right on the money!
I’m So glad to hear this. I say this on FB to everyone. I laughed because only a true husky owner would understand what you shared. I have 2 and it’s the only Breed I have owned. Loved your video!! Take care
My first dog when on my own. Loved that dog. Just stubborn and needy. When I worked mid night shift. Had to leave Dakota with my mom. If dog ran had to go get my car only way dog came to me when running. Jumped in car. Great dogs but owners need to dedicated. I would also recommend get 2 if u can.
I have 3 huskies and agree with everything you said although I do find if you can get through the first year it’s so worth it mine have calmed down and are now amazing. We bath them and blow dry them and brush every Saturday and the shedding went down dramatically blow drying them while brushing does make a big difference.
I own three Siberian huskies, they are CRAZY but I love them. Siberian huskies are amazing dogs. They need LOTS of exercise, we keep ours outdoors during the day and inside at night. They are very stubborn and very loud at times. The main thing I have to say is that you should not get one if you don't have space.
One trick to getting your husky to stay near and not run off is when they're puppies train them with a command or sound that will make them turn around and come back to you. What I did was use a whistle to call him back so if my husky goes a bit farther then I want him too I'll just whistle and he'll come back and know to stay closer but yes once they see another husky all commands go out the window. This works with any other dog or person but onces it another of his kind he doesn't care. So yes it is possible to train the off leash just when they see their breed don't expect them to listen to you most of the time
Yeah, right on on every point. My husky strangely doesn't howl that much, but his bark talk is so cute. I have a big yard and he spends the days running around and playing with my other dog, I also take him on walks, so i think he is well exercised. Of course he had many occasions when he ran away. My dummy sister in law has the tendency to leave the door open, and some family members also do it when they come visit, so he runs so much that I hear his feet on the ground like the ones horses make on races. I always worry, sometimes I can't find him, but he has learn the way home now. He is stubborn, and the only person that makes him stopped on his tracks is my dad. My dad can leave the door open while he is on the yard with him, and he just stays still on the corner to show my dad he won't run away and when he is about to my dad can make him come back inside if he calls him
My Siberian Husky 'Storm' is the most loving dog that I've ever had! I could make 40 'dog hair' sweaters with the amount of hair he drops!! So, so loving though!! :)

As a husky owner for 30 years I can tell you that this video is very accurate and should be watched by anyone contemplating getting this breed.
I second james comment. and would add ONLY take dog advice from another SIBERIAN HUSKY OWNER. i have seen so many sheperd owners try to tell Husky owners how to train their dog. PLEASE!!! a monkey can train a Shepard
Thank you. Totally agree!
A couple of things to add:
1. They dig. A LOT.
2. The love to be outside at night. We have a fenced in yard. Our girl loves to sit outside under the stars. And the colder the better at night.
3. Running. Is. The. Best. Thing. Ever. for a Husky.
Oh , and they are the sweetest dogs ever.
Bill Dan Agreed! If I give my huskies an option, they’ll sleep outside every night!
Husky, Why are you running
Mine has to sleep underneath my bed, I guess they all have their own personality
@@Ms122486 hehehehe that's too funny😂
Huskies like to dig the way most dogs like to dig. In my experience with the 2 Siberia s I've owned its not difficult to train out of them. You put their poop and some cayenne pepper in the holes their working on every day in the yard. After about 2 weeks of doing this daily, they give up and don't really take it up again. I've recommended this to my friends who have had problems with their dogs digging and it doesn't seem to matter how old a dog is either. Works like a charm
Imo, this video is great partly because it may prevent cruelty to huskies caused by ignorance about the breed! 👍🌟❤️
Im seriously thinking of getting a Husky, I live in suburban London,
and have run Marathons, so "I KNOW its a 10 mile run EVERY evening"
with my Husky, my favorite holiday destination is ICELAND too,
I "think?" that my Husky, may well truly enjoy, hitch hiking around Iceland
with me for a month, I wont feed my Husky "dog food" either,
I will give it "raw organic meat" to eat instead,
All sled dogs have obedience problems, where even if they know the command they might decide to disobey it...

Are they dangerous
Is there a specific time of year they blow? Im really looking in to getting a husky.
I just got a husky pup, he's surprisingly good. he's very easy to train, he's teething really badly right now but not biting anything he knows he's not allowed to bite, he eats three times a day and already knows to pee and poop outside (with a few exceptions of him having diarrhea in the house due to some puppy stress) and he's quickly getting the hang of walks. amazingly adorable and smart ginger husky
nadia mcnally give it time. they go through stages. my boy is going to be 2 in may and he is a handful
Awesome! I remember when my husky was a young puppy. Oh how puppy hood goes by so quick. Now I've owned by husky for a bit over 3 years. :)
What a wonderful story! Thank you so much for sharing😊
I still want a husky puppy after watching this video
MegaNatasha13 wait till you see my baby husky it's so cute😀
MegaNatasha13 they are a lot of work u have to walk them at least 6 miles daily
MegaNatasha13 they chew everything if left alone for too long they will destroy the house
chell n ellie Austin all dogs need walks, training. my dog has hundreds of miles of walks, training, guidance and love. people tell me she is soo well behaved, I tell them..she did not come that way@as a young dog she was psychotic😊 not a husky, but all dogs need walks, training, patience and love.
MegaNatasha13 I had a husky when I was growing up. She ate one of those lantern batteries when she was a pup. She always had stomach issues
Lmfao
Patrick Pesek they are wonderful dogs growing up I had an Akita husky mix named Romeo best dog ever just so much hair !!!!! All the hair!!!
Patrick Pesek Češi milují husky!
Idallis Kuderna a
how long does he need to play outside a day?
Good video for those thinking about getting a Husky! We have a 1 in a million Husky that NEVER wanders off. He knows how to open the front door and let himself out. No wall, no fence, and never leaves the yard. He also hikes off leash(no training) including trips to and from the dog park.
I know exactly what you are talking about......I have had Sibes since 1982....they are my heart and complete my soul...:)
That whole ignoring commands thing...my wife and I call that Husky-deaf.
Candy Banks aahahahaha it’s contagious 😷😂😂😂💙
Stealing this for my husky. Pretty sure every husky owner knows the idgaf look we get from them when we tell them to do something 😂
I own 2 huskies & u are so right about everything u said .They always expect a reward when they obey an order from u.Great video
Thank you for sharing, I have two of them both are just turning 17 years old. they are great dogs as long as you treat they like your own family.
Agree best dogs ever, but not for everyone.
I adopted my husky today and am picking him up tomorrow, I’m so excited I can’t wait 😊
Hope all is well with your dog
We just adopted a Huskador. A 1 year old girl, that's had minimal training. Luckily we've raised dogs before. These videos are quite helpful. Thanks for sharing.
I had an Alaskan Husky. We lost him last year. He was so gentle and quite tame. We just got a miniature Siberian Husky. She is so beautiful but I was shocked at her insame energy and attitued. She is going to be a handful, but I love it. I named her Scarlet after Scarlet in Gone with the Wind. Beautiful and Sassy!
You are speaking the truth!! I Thank you for making this video because too many ppl abandon these beautiful dogs
All commands are SUGGESTIONS cracks me up
We know soooooo well about Sibarian Huskies!
Sounds like you're a pro! The dyson is on my Christmas list every year 😁
Good video. Have had eight over past 25 years. All but one a rescue or adoption. Yes, they shed ferociously and will run if they escape. And they are true escape artists. Had a full grown female slip through a a fence gap only 3-1/2 inches wide.
We had one go through the cat door. She only got into the other room but we were amazed she fit through there. They are part magic I think!
I just bought a baby husky and I’m sooo pumped!!!! Thanks for the INFO!!
I have 2 Siberian Huskies as well. I fully agree with all points!!!👍👍👍 Yes! I still love them and never do I want another dog race!!!
my husky hikes only off the leash!!
They understand that they can look after themselves and its fun to run after anything moving ! not as much fun for me trying for hours to get them back
The best thing is coming home to them and having them greet me. Full of love and naughtiness !
Huskies are VERY challenging, but that's what makes them so fun.
True! It makes the whole thing so rewarding 😁
I’ve had a husky puppy now for three weeks and he’s so adorable but the first couple of days was so hard cause the poor pup was so nervous and scared he hates to be alone but now getting better by the day fingers crossed 🤞
Good luck and take plenty of pictures! They grow up so fast!
Conclusion: love them, but not for me :)
Hopefully even better each day
Hang in there! It does get better!
Meeler Husky thank you so much. You’re amazing for raising 2 of them 💪💪👌👌
I have two Huskies and there are so many good traits you forget or at least tolerate the bad ones. Just don't lose your temper and yell and don't hit with your hands. You can nudge them with your foot but don't be rough. They remember.
I own a husky and that was like the most spot on video ever...well done!!!
LOL you are spot on with attitude, shed and running. We have tried and tried to break the pulling on our past and present husky's, we gave up. They WALK YOU! Plus we gave up on cleaning the house, visitors have to just deal with it lol. Good and spot on video :)
Perfect! My mom cleans the house down 2 hours a day every morning and she enjoys it sooo PERFECT DOGGIE!
I love these videos I relate so much
My husky is grey/white with heterochromia aka one brown eye one blue eye♥️I love him,his name is Balto.
My sibirian Huskey passed away in February of old age. I miss her a lot.😭
My Siberian husky passed away in August 2 years ago, everyone I tell says that he might have had a stroke 😔 I still miss him
My Siberian husky passed away 23 years ago, I miss her so much, I won't have another dog any more. She trained me very well and argued with me a lot.
Good insight and very true. However, I don't regret getting my husky one bit. Best dog ever.

They are talkers . I love my Huskies double coat & all . Very true points that you made . They are a lot of work but so worth it :)
LOL--If I see her, I'll call you! ;-)
My huskies stay in my fenced in yard. My youngest husky bikejors and my old husky is 13. I think they are less likely to become fence jumpers if they get adequate exercise.
Our fence is high enough for a husky then
When I was a kid, I had a Siberian Husky named Neptune. He ran away because we didn't know they are escape artists. I always remember how hard it was to train them, but they are such beautiful dogs.
all of these are so so so true. We love our Siberians, but they can be tough.
I don't even have a husky but like watching videos about them. My friend just got 2 pups. Wait till they start shedding, she's a cleaning fanatic.
I used to have a Welsh Terrier and he was SO stubborn i think im ready for a husky :')
"voodoo magic" - that slayed me! I 100% appreciate that sentiment! my huskamute loves running more than anything!
I just got a 9year old ginger Siberian Husky and I can see her hair floating in the air😆 but she’s the best and she gets along with my other dogs🐶
I just got a husky. He is 7 weeks old, I have to clean after him a lot, but I love him to bits.
Great video. I live with a Husky( my roommates) I spend all day every day with him and have for the past 20 months. Your descriptions of them are right on the money!
her eyesssss so adorable... :*
Truer words have never been spoken
I’m
So glad to hear this.
