Aussie here, picked up my first bottle of bourbon last week because of you guys - 40% Buffalo Trace! Also you'd be shocked how available Blantons and Eagle Rare are down under
@Lithanify He is correct - the alcohol excise tax on Bourbon (so much for the Aus / US free trade agreement I guess) is $101.85 AUD or $66.31 USD for each liter of alcohol. So for a bottle of Buffalo Trace @ 700ml @ 80 Proof, that would equal $28.52AUD in taxes. There is still a 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax) at the register as well. Currently you can pick up a bottle from Dan Murphys for $55 AUD which is a great deal, normal price is more like $65 AUD. He's right about the availability - you can get as much Eagle Rare and Blantons as you like. No cheap EH Taylor though, it's all like $150 USD.
I often find that the 90 proof point offerings are good for the start of the evening in order to acclimate the palette for the higher proofs later. I don't purchase anything of a lower proof point but, if I were offered a pour from someone, I wouldn't turn it down. Great show as always! Cheers!

We get this in Australia due to the excessive rate of taxation on alcohol calculated by ABV. It costs around $60 a bottle and $28.01 of that goes straight to the government. Excise on the same bottle at 45% would be $31.52

I've not heard that, and when a distillery wants you to think of something as small batch they put it on the label. But the term is meaningless. For an outfit like Jim Beam or Jack Daniel's, a small batch might be 500 barrels, but a small batch at a place like Troy and Sons a small batch might be 15 barrels. The only time I notice whether something's small batch is when I have to differentiate - for instance between Four Roses Small Batch and Four Roses Single Barrel.
Usually i don't comment - but this is a comparison i've been waiting for! In Hungary (as i guess most of EU) it's 40%, and the 45% only available as a 1litre store pick which is really rare to find. So far i haven't tried it, as i had no clue how different would it be from a 45%. Keep up the awesome content, and can't wait for the 80 proof blind 💪
I recently had the 80 proof in Paris. It was a perfect bottle for the hotel room. Could pour a nice one and not get stiff before we would head out for touristy type stuff. I believe it was around (with currency conversion) $25-$27.
I think some locations outside of the US have a requirement for 80 proof. There is also a 700ml restriction as well. I think they just make the 80p/700ml for all exports.
I spent over half of the video focused on whether or not that 80 proof bottle was smaller. I had to start the video over because I wasn't paying attention to what they were saying.
It is the only American bottle under 43%/86 proof in the store I frequent. It has nothing to do with our rules and everything to do with buffalo trace. I do not understand why... So bad.
I used to drink a lot of buffalo trace, its available on offer for £20 here in the UK at at least one supermarket all the time 😂 Recently though i found it was just a little too watery for me to fully enjoy. I'll probably still buy it for whiskey sours and so forth but for a budget sipper i'd probably use makers mark which is usually on offer here for around £25 somewhere or other....i seem to need rhat extra 5% abv 😂 Will try a 90 proof BT all day long though!
It's challenging for me to go backwards in proof after having so many great bourbons in higher proof. That being said, I do and will drink it when available. Woodford Double Oak is 92 % but and awesome pour. OF 86 and 100 are awesome. Old Grandad BIb at 100 is great. I'll use lower proof for mixed drinks. I'll never turn away a BIB.
Picked it up for 17$ at Costco in the UK. Didn’t even notice it was a 40 and not a 45! Had to go check in the bar I have 2 40’s and a 45 I brought with me from the states. 😂
Old Taylor is 80° from Buff Trace. Heck, it even has E. H. Taylor's signature on it. I got a handle of it for $19.99... it was allocated here in VA. 😂 I'm curious how it would stack up. Maybe I'll send you guys a sample.
I live in Canada now but I’m from Australia originally. I’ve been wondering this for a while but most bourbons that we get into Australia are all proofed down to 80 proof, buffalo trace, makers mark, gentleman jack. I believe it has something to do with taxes though I’ve never officially heard the answer. My question is though, cheaper bourbons we get Jim beam for example is proofed down to 74. How are they still allowed to label that as bourbon because it should be minimum 80 right?
Interesting point not sure how it can display Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey on the label at 74 proof. I thought bourbon requirements were bottling at 80 proof or higher?
This vid was perfect for me. I'm pretty new to Bourbon and love EHT single barrel because it's like water in smoothness and that's what I think I want. I was recently told not to say smooth, but refer to heat. I don't like a hot finish at all. So it might all be about proof though my EHT is 100 proof. I'm loving Malibu coconut rum tiki drinks that are so light like 21 abv. I'd love some recommendations because I want flavor too.
If you like Jack try barrel select stubby square bottle black label then if your ready for serious flavor with some heat step up to single barrel, barrel proof same bottle gold label. If you can handle a little rye spice you will get some beautiful cherry esc finishes from Wild turkey start with 101 or I think the 83? To see if you like the mash first. Then when your ready step up to rare breed. I would say if your siping bourbon and want to get all the flavors they refer to do not chase it. After 3 or 4 good sips when a lil buzz starts to set in you will notice the burn starts to go away. When you can’t taste the burn in 90 proof and no chaser your ready to step up to the higher proof and reeeeeallly get the strong flavors, ie cherry, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, butterscotch etc. but to each their own drink how you like, I start with a simple Jack/rum and Coke some nights when I don’t want to get the first drink quivers.
I picked up a bottle of 80 proof BT when we were on family vacation in England/Scotland. If I remember correctly is was around $30. I thought it was good for a lower proof budget Bourbon. I agree with you on the finish.
Great video! You guys are probably the best one to ask. I got a Buffalo Trace 80 Proof for 21$ after tax. And since I love their flavour profile I want to upgrade the bottle for a Buffalo Trace 90 Proof (40$) or Eagle Rare (58$). Which one would you recommend me?
I've had regular Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Weller Special Reserve, E.H. Taylor Small Batch, and samples of Blanton's, Blanton's Straight From the Barrel, and Stagg (Jr.). The only one that impressed me was the SFTB. I've concluded that 99% of Buffalo Trace's popularity is pure hype. It's not bad bourbon, but there's a ton of stuff out there that's better, easier to find, and cheaper (e.g. the Balcones Baby Blue corn whisky that I'm sipping on now - it's 40 bucks, I can find it whenever I want it, and it's considerably better, in my judgment, than anything but the SFTB).
Very informative video. It's terrible how Sazerac can manage to have world-wide distribution of Buffalo Trace, but you can't find it in a majority of the major metropolitan cities here in the USA. And even though it's allocated, they still are able to offer store single barrel picks. Now, they're definitely amazing at marketing, but the "our entire product line is on allocation" business mode has definitely turned me off of the entire corporation. It's even more unfortunate because they've stayed silent to their customers about any of this.
Yeah i get alot of stuff from Japan! Always great to compare! Hopefully you guys got a bottle of Bourbon Lore Ben Holladay 18 Barrell Blend! Can't wait to see your review of it!
One of my local liquor stores in MA has had a handful of this 80 proof buffalo sitting on the shelf for $40 for a few weeks now. Don't know how they got it or if they're even allowed to sell it since it's probably not through a licensed MA distributor. Does anyone know how this could have happened?
We get this 80 proof version in the uk 🇬🇧 I personally think it’s real watery!! I enjoyed it at first but it’s honestly like a watery wine I hate to say that because I love BT gear in general I still enjoy it in cocktails mainly because I can use way more of it in my drink
Maker’s also bottles at 80 proof for Australia. If you can find Jack Daniel’s 1907, that’s bottled specifically for Australia at 37% ABV. Four Roses also produces Super Premium, Black Label, and believe it or not Henry McKenna for the Japanese market.
Also the normal buffalo trace i buy here in Germany is 80 proof.... I ordered now a 1 liter bottle which should be then 90 proof. Interested if there is a Difference
We get the 40% one here in Ireland too, around €30 but u can also get the 45% one from some retailers. Taxes and duty is a big issue here, the 45% one is closer too €50. I also got a 1 litre bottle single barrel store pick from la maison du whiskey in France. €75 and its delicious!
I picked up a buffalo trace while in Australia, had a taste and was seriously sad as it turned out to be only 80 proof so talk about thin and watery! Switched over and started drinking Russell’s 10 year which was a delicious pour. Cheers!
The 80 proof is standard here in Belgium as well. You can get it pretty much anywhere. I generally get the 1 litre bottles because they're bottled at... 90 proof. I know, makes no sense.
We mainly have 80 proof Buffalo Trace here in Germany. For whatever reason the 1 liter bottle is 90 proof though. The 0.7l 80-proof goes for like 19€ (sometimes 16 on amazon). The Liter usually around 26€. I dont really understand why they do 80 proof. Maybe because the better known whiskey brands and scotches (Jack/Jim/Johnny etc) are all 80?
I wrote exactly the same thing just now. I suspect the 1l might be our "travel retail" offering, those are always a bit different. The 1l non-chill rare breed is also only available as "travel retail" AFAIK
I used to buy BT here in England when the local ASDA was out of JD. Always disappointed. Now since getting educated have 6 litres of JD untouched Christmas but had many Four Roses small batch, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Ezra, High West Double Rye, Black & Gold, Rittenhouse Rye, Sazerac Rye. Never missing Buffalo Trace 80 proof 🤷🏻🥃🥃🥃
I got my buffalo Trace bottle here in Australia it's 40% I love it as a mixer but Old Forester is better and still 40%! But alcohol percentages are crazy here, a 700ml bottle of Jim Beam is 40% while the litre bottle is 37%, buffalo Trace is easily available and so is eagle rare and blantons but very expensive
BT is the most overhyped bourbon on earth. Agree with Trenton - it's thin, unremarkable with limited residual flavor. For the noobs, it's probably a good one but that's where it stops. My local AZ Walmart, Total Wine and even CVS stores have cases of this stuff at $23.99 and I walk right by it. Sorry to those where this is allocated (I used to live in NC and never had a chance to buy this) but you're not missing anything. It's not a great sipper and a really bad mixer b/c of lack of rye bite and low ABV. OGD BiB at $16.99 is a better budget bourbon.
I have noticed that you guys do a lot more small distilleries, unusual releases like this etc. i enjoy that. Other channels do about 6-8 bourbons and i hate the proof crap. I will say larceny barrel proof was better than Larceny by far, but at the same time focussing on proof or popularity means you miss out on great flavors. Yes, if i drink a higher proof then switch to a lower proof it is like drinking tea, but it is enjoyable. If proof mattered then we just need a bottle of 151 proof rum and be done with it. The flavor differences and unique tastes are an adventure every time. Your channel is the only one to mention that depending on the night a bottle you have had 100 times might taste different on that night, and i find that true. That i find enjoyable because it means that every single time i sip that it will be new.
Higher proof less dilution less dilution more tannins more tannins more flavor. Start low proof few sips when you can’t taste the burn step up to enjoy the more flavorful stuff without the ethanol burn. Bourbon unlike rum and other distillates gets a huge amount of flavor from the fresh oak barrels it’s required to be aged in. (Yes the mash and yeast have an affect as well) It cannot be bastardized by added sugars or syrups or fortified with other distillates. I know it might sound hipstery but truly it is a very organic experience and there is no trickery you know exactly what you’re getting for it to be called bourbon. With the restrictions bourbon is forced to go through it creates at least some since or commonality between all the different distilleries.
@@hgbuckwheat660 not true. Larceny burns like acid at 92. Barrel proof at 126 was less acid burn on my palate. I can drink rare breed and OGD 114 all day long first sip or last they are wonderful. Eagle rare. So far you name it i have enjoyed it other than larceny. Nothing burns like larceny. Nothing is as fruit forward as plain old four roses which is excellent. Woodford reserve dbl oak is excellent i love the oak finish. To my palate proof seems to not matter. The range of flavors is wonderful. Jts brown has a cream corn like sweetness. The 80 i have yet to find the 100. Each palate is different i suppose
All I will say is people go Ape Nuts over BT. At the end of the day it is still an over hyped bottom shelf bourbon. Try Russell's 10 same proof and maybe $5 bucks higher. The Single Barrel BTs are better but nothing super special.
EU tariffs on any non EU product over 40% ABV are a big issue. Also, additional taxes for higher proof liquors in many countries which do not technically have a tariff.
gunna agree with trenton here. standard BT is well whiskey. i won't ever buy a bottle again. the fact that WSR is about hte same price and way more flavor is crazy to me since theyre from the same distillery.
It’s funny because my buddy in Denmark sent me pictures of the LLS and they hardly even know what bourbon is. There is a huge preference for scotch and Irish over bourbon. I have a suspicion that is why they have it at the most approachable proof.
Japan does the same with Blantons it’s 40% red black and I believe a green label. This bottle looks like a 700ml also. Which is the standard in Europe. And starting to be the standard here. Get less pay the same as 750ml. Makes perfect sense.
@@scoobtoober2975 40 for BT store pick is fair in my opinion. some of them are fantastic! The store pick mentioned in this comment i like more than eagle rare.
Great video, guys. It's amazing what our brain will help our palate to decipher. Blind I believe you guys would have given it an entirely different review. Cheers.
I feel a lot of the flavor is in the alcohol and when you thin it down with water it loses a lot of that through thinning. Those low octane whiskeys(ys) are better left for mixing and barbecue sauce.
Here in Australia, we get all the watered down bourbons. BT is 40%. Actually Jim Beam is 37%!!! Not enough alcohol in it to actually legally be called a bourbon.
All 80 blind with Ancient Age, Benchmark, Early Times, Henry McKenna, J.T.S. Brown, Old Taylor. LOL, I've never tried any of them. There's also Jim Beam and Gentleman Jack.

You mentioned Jimmy Crack Corn...aka Blue Tail Fly...there's an interesting story to the meaning of the song. Worth googling. Lyrics below.
"I've heard it said
That this song was a favourite
Of that very famous and great American
Abraham Lincoln"
When I was young, I used to wait
On master and give him his plate
And pass him the bottle when he got dry
And brush away the blue tail fly
Jimmy, crack corn, I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
My master's gone away
And when he'd ride in the afternoon
I'd follow after, with a hickory broom
The pony being rather shy
When bitten by blue tail fly
Jimmy, crack corn, I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
My master's gone away
One day, he ride around the farm
The flies so numerous, they did swarm
One chanced to bite him on the thigh
The devil take the blue tail fly
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
My master's gone away
The pony run, he jumped, he pitch
He threw my master in the ditch
He died and the jury wondered why
The verdict was the blue tail fly
Jimmy, crack corn, I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
My master's gone away
They lay him under a 'simmon tree
His epitaph is there to see
"Beneath this stone, I'm forced to lie
Victim of the blue tail fly"
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
Jimmy, crack corn and I don't care
My master's gone away

The only time I notice whether something's small batch is when I have to differentiate - for instance between Four Roses Small Batch and Four Roses Single Barrel.
I had Buffalo Trace as one of my first bourbons. I still like it. We can get it here in south Texas for $32. I keep it on my shelf.
Thanks for doing the comparison!
Export only? So about the same availability as the regular Buffalo Trace anywhere near me in the states lol. Enjoyed the video.
Kurt is right, the 80 proof BT is quite good imo, very nice sipper
I thought that bottle looked smaller, I might have missed them commenting on the size of they did.
So bad.
I used to drink a lot of buffalo trace, its available on offer for £20 here in the UK at at least one supermarket all the time 😂
Recently though i found it was just a little too watery for me to fully enjoy. I'll probably still buy it for whiskey sours and so forth but for a budget sipper i'd probably use makers mark which is usually on offer here for around £25 somewhere or other....i seem to need rhat extra 5% abv 😂
Will try a 90 proof BT all day long though!
Buffalo Trace is all over Oakland and Macomb Counties in MI
all over shelby twp msrp
This is our favorite! We have a case in the basement.
Wow. I live in Port Washington NY. Never heard of this company and definitely have never seen this before.
It has everything to do with taxes. These distortions exist around the world.
Does anyone visit the basement bar who has never has a sip of bourbon?
Interesting point not sure how it can display Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey on the label at 74 proof. I thought bourbon requirements were bottling at 80 proof or higher?
You're getting shafted bruv. Everything here is 80 proof minimum, and that tends to be bottom shelf bs.. once you get over 100 proof is the real deal.
In the Netherlands we also mainly get the 40%abv bottles, Even a storepick at one of the larger chains was 40%
This vid was perfect for me.
You guys will definitely have to do that 80-proof blind tasting soon. I am a regular to higher-proof guy myself, but I am curious about your findings.
Store picks are best for buffalo trace. It's also a great mixer.
Availability in Australia of BT and ER is great. I do wish BT was 90 proof. ER is no issue and goes on sale often for AUD $89
Can't wait for the battle of the 80 proofers!
Here to watch! Been looking forward to this one.
Several 80 proof bourbons taste like lightly bourbon flavored water to me. I feel you Trent.
I would love to compare this to the Benchmark 8.
40% ABV BT is readily available in the UK in the grocery stores!!
Hey my wife is from Estonia and I had that 80 proof 700ml bottle last summer!
Super cool!
Here in Netherlands or Germany it’s about 19-24 euro for a 700ml bottle. Available almost at all liquor stores, very easy to find.
I’m from the uk and we get the 80 proof. I will say it’s easy to find, but I do wish it was 90.
We do have a few store picks around of BT at 45%, though.
Available in the E.U countries at 80 proof.
Cheers!
What's next an SLB Drinks comparison of 80 proof Japanese Blantons vs regular US 93 proof SB 😂?!
The 80 proof is standard here in Belgium as well. You can get it pretty much anywhere. I generally get the 1 litre bottles because they're bottled at... 90 proof. I know, makes no sense.
Only 40% abv in the UK too. Available everywhere for about £25 though.
£19-£20 with uk amazon prime
@debizzleking9492 also on clubcard offer at the moment too.
Only £19.50 at Tesco and £20 at Waitrose at the moment.
Same in NL, 1 liter is 90 proof. 0.7 is 80 proof. Price a little higher Germany, 21-25 euro.
@@thomas19902323 Yeah that might be the reason. Most of the liter are also available in duty free shops
The 80 proof is the standard issue we get in the UK.
We gear the 80 proof (£27) as standard in the uk but can get barrel picks which are 90 proof.
Basil Hayden, Old Forester, Buffalo Trace 80, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey blind?
Does OF make an 80 proofer?
@@robschoenung9543 like BT they make it for international. OF 80 is the standard in Australia, rather than 86
I have noticed that you guys do a lot more small distilleries, unusual releases like this etc. i enjoy that.
BottleCaps are great. Them and the original Spree are my sugar fix. Great show 40% BT ….. Who Knew?????
All I will say is people go Ape Nuts over BT. At the end of the day it is still an over hyped bottom shelf bourbon. Try Russell's 10 same proof and maybe $5 bucks higher. The Single Barrel BTs are better but nothing super special.
Love Buffalo Trace, but here in Stratford, Ct the price is $60 plus
Yeah their availability and price cracks me up. If you can find it near me the lowest I have bought it for was 40. Didn't know it can be had for 25,
Damn! 60!! Around 30 here on ohio with tax
Here too. Only the lower proof common Buffalo Trace available.
80 proofers taste like flat watery soda to me anyway. I hear you Trent.
Add Flying Ace to the list. Great budget 80 proofer at $30/bottle.
BT is standard 40% 80proof here in UK
770 Down in Terre Haute had a VERY good store pick a couple months ago of BT. If you guys see one around pick it up, trust me.
Store pick near me is $40 in Colorado is it considered a good buy by your tastebuds
Cheers.
You should do a 80p blind!
I feel a lot of the flavor is in the alcohol and when you thin it down with water it loses a lot of that through thinning. Those low octane whiskeys(ys) are better left for mixing and barbecue sauce.
I wish we had Buffalo Trace here for $20-25! I’ve purchased 3 bottles in the past year. $40-45 each! High liquor tax here in Montana! 🤬
Has anyone tried the Kosher Buffalo Trace? Love your videos!
Found a bottle of Whiskey Acres Blue popcorn. Last bottle they had. It's my bottle now. :)
I’d bet that Very Old Barton 80 proof would give it a run for the money.
It is time for the "Bottom Shelf "bourbon-like liquid" Madness Tournament!
In Finland its 40% also. Price is 47€ so about $50.
I bought one of the 40% BT bottles at one of my local stores in Massachusetts. Not sure how they were able to get a few cases of the stuff.
Anyone else absolutely love this channel? Best whiskey channel I have ever found on UA-cam. I've spent way too many hours on these vids but I don't regret a second.
I have never found a bottle of buffalo trace here in West Palm Beach Florida
