Tom is most certainly a highly competent sailor but he’s also an absolutely fantastic presenter. He’s the whole 9 yards wrapped up into one. They don’t get any better than that. He’s probably the best. This is good stuff.
I could listen to your tales all day Tom. And thank you for such an interesting video, am sure I’ll never need to service an old wooden block but it’s fascinating to watch.
Tom - heard your wooden boat webinar - instant fan! From lake erie part of the great lakes in the usa i want to thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge of your life long experiences. Your colorful story telling combined with historic real life commentary is priceless. Keep the passion going, cheers!
That was lovely. Irreplaceable. Two chats I'd like to suggest.... 1.What's in your pockets or on your belt when you sail? Knives, multi-tools etc. Stuff you'd take on a passage on another boat. Bet this will spur some yarn digressions. 2.your views on sandwiched hulls. Would you buy one from the 80s or a newish version or steer clear completely.... and why? ATB Bill
Excellent Tom! Love to see these traditional methods - great for anyone who didn't grow up with handy relatives to show them the tricks of the workshop.
Speaking as someone from North Yorkshire, Stokesley, that job is a good’un . How did you....... but that’s another story. Downs Road Boatyard is making new blocks for Thames Barges and one Cutty Sark. They did the re-rigging post fire and relaid the forpeack . Nice to see the quality in your life.
Hello. I watch your films here on UA-cam. You are talking about Linseed oil ( Linolje) . They sell it in Norway today. Can buy in 1 litre. Or 5 litres. They also sell 10 liters. :)
Just bought your day skipper book on a recommendation without realising it was you! Really enjoying reading it alongside the day skipper theory course.
Block and tackle while in the Navy as a backup to the electric chain fall for the accommodation ladder we had a 6 to 1 block and tackle with 1 inch nylon to raise the ladder if the chain fall ever crapped out. Once the ladder was down we would remove the electric chain fall and put up the nicely oiled block and tackle. A lot of people really like the look of it. We also used to bring drunken sailors to the main deck.
With a 67 year old sailboat, I constantly get the same "Must be a lot of work..." comment. When did society de-value work? What incredible things are people achieving with all their 'labor saving' devices? Ah well, time to get back to my off-season boat work. Cheers.
Another great upload Tom. True about the comments by passers by when you own a wooden yacht. Most are terrified by the prospect of upkeep we gain hours of pleasure from 🤣
Nearly right Ryan. Actually it's a T140 750cc '70s Bonnie. Blew out when I was going for the ton! The other gasket with a hole in is my 1949 4litre Bentley. Don't ask how that happened Mate!
As long as it is liquid, it goes back into the cleaning diesel jar, with a tap 3 cm above the bottom. And no, nothing works better, that does not harm the metal parts.
Good to see you again Tom 😊
Illegal party 🤣🤣 I can't imagine

Tom is such a great storyteller. I could listen to him for hours on end. Thanks for these great videos Tom.
Tom, I bet your shop smells like the best stuff on earth, teak, seam compound, and turpentine. 😎
Fun video.....i enjoy the old school stuff....blocks, rigging, sextants.....thx! Hope you are safe and Covid free! Andrew

Great video Tom. I hope you had some heating on (in the workshop) for the Girl with the motorbike. 😉
Well it does look like alot of work! Well done to you for putting it all in and earning the reward of such a gorgeous boat and block!
"Look at that hoary old beast". Love the salty delivery from Tom. Proper man of the sea

Great vid Tom, from my days in the mob I still remember the smell of LG280, Buster
I missed your videos, Tom! They are the best that UA-cam has to offer. Great video, and thanks!
Simply marvelous, Thank You.
The sailing life is the good life.
Excellent! Thanks! Please do more wooden boat upkeep tips including things like splicing the main brace.
Nothing like a well maintained doorstopper _/)
Thanks for your story telling skills and sharing it :-)
"Look like a lot of work."
"More work than you're good for, mate."
Lovely.
Super story Tom the good old days
The advert at the start was the Wellman sea shanty, I'll never get it out of my head tonight 😭
Wonderful
Tom, absolutely love your videos! Can you do a video on where and how to start sailing. What courses to do? What boat is advised as a first boat? Etc
Nice work
Proper job
Beautiful job.

I keep bees 🐝 on my boat. 💗🐝🐝
Was it Esso Blue or Pink paraffin? Obviously I do not remember the TV adverts. My Mum told me about them. 😉 Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Nice to see someone I follow on UA-cam who follows someone else I follow!
@@joeltatham5673 We watch all the best channels 👍
A gud one indeed!
Looks like an Old 9 stud 650 Triumph Head gasket behind you on the wall 😉

What is the blue item oval shaped behind you around 1:16?
Cruzan Rum...good for cleaning windows with. Anegada Passage...not as easy as it looks on a chart.
Would a degreaser with less environmental impact work for removing the grease?
As long as it is liquid, it goes back into the cleaning diesel jar, with a tap 3 cm above the bottom. And no, nothing works better, that does not harm the metal parts.
Thankyou. I too remember rum a dollar a bottle in the Virgins
Tom, in my mind I can only emagine listening to you and the late Tristan Jones swaping sailing tales in a proper seamans pub.
This is pure boat porn! Thanks Tom!
Just spray some “WD40” on it. Do Brits know what that is ? 😀
