- In this video, I'm showing how to make a block and tackle. In this how-to woodworking video, I draw the shape of the block and tackle by hand, and just kind of go from there. The result is this beautiful block and tackle.

This has me rethinking buying a tool hoist...
You might need it soon!
That's awesome!! Looks great...and I think that's a really cool backstory with the wood for somebody in the south. He'll love it!
Thank you! Yeah, pretty much anyone in LA, MS and AL will remember Hurricane Katrina vividly.
Cool idea mixing epoxy on blue tape. No more searching around the garage for a piece of cardboard. Great video as always!
goali3903 thank you! YeH, that’s a good quick way to not make a mess when you’re mixing epoxy!
This turned out great! Great way to tackle a cool project.
I'm a fan of this comment.
Thanks so much, James! And I see what you did there. ha ha
@@BruceAUlrich I'm gearing up for a good pun to drop for Drew. ;)
smaller projects are always some of the most fun projects too 👍🏻
Yeah, there’s something about them that’s satisfying.
Turned out great, nice work Bruce
Appreciate that, TJ!
I am in the process of make a double and single block, so your video was helpful. Thanks.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Now you need to build a ship haha. Nice job It will be a nice talk about attraction
Ha ha. Maybe one day! I hope it is a conversation piece
Awesome job Bruce! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you!
Thumbnail got me! You an the damn glue bottle... great project.. seemed like a lot of fun!
Oh, good to hear it was appealing to the eye. Thanks so much! I had just gotten that new glue bottle opener at the time and it was like a new toy. LOL
Looks really cool, good job!
Thank you very much!
Snatch Block! Wow, that's amazing job, Bruce. Somehow I missed this back in August, glad I had some time today and discovered it.
I need to show this to my wife and tell her: "See, Bruce's wife is willing to be his camera operator!" (it won't work)
Hey, glad you did too, Art! Thanks! Well, it's worth a try with your wife, right?
@@BruceAUlrich not really.... ;-)
For what it’s worth, my wife has not helped me with filming since summer. She’s been too busy.
that's really cool. I always wondered what this thing was and how it was made. Awesome job Bruce!
Thank you! There is a chance some pieces need to be a bit different, but that’s how it is with making anything. Always more than one way to go about it.
@@BruceAUlrich like everything pretty much :)
That thing at 2:00 on the glue is something I need!! I spend way too much time fiddling with the glue bottles. Really cool display piece!
Thank you! Hit up Ptreesworkshop on IG. He makes these and sells them!
That's a great looking piece and the walnut oil really brings out the grain in that piece. Nice work, Bruce.
Thank you! It was a fun challenge!
Awesome video Bruce!! That is a very cool build!!👍
SWCreations4u thank you so much! It was quite the challenge but I’m really pleased with how it turned out!
nice work! I too like they way they look. Very decorative! and as always - nice video production! 👍
Appreciate that! I can’t believe it turned out so well just from a freehand sketch!
Awesome Bruce! Great large work man, I loved how well the groove came out.
Thank you! It looks like one that has had a rope rub against it for years.
Loved the design and outcome. My only remark would be to countersink the bolts and nuts and cover them them with a piece of the same wood. That would create a “how did you do that” moment for the viewers. But a very nice product and process which I might try soon.
That’s a great idea! Thanks for that!
Bruce this turned out amazing! Makes me want to make a usable one!
I want to see that! Thanks for watching!
You can sand aluminum and steel really with that sander. Might clog up the paper a bit but I've done it quite often with mine.
I tried & with these small parts, I should have put the foot on to help. It was wanting to grab it out of my hand.
Best video yet Bruce. Having a camera-woman really makes a difference! I like the different angle shots. And that’s oak.walnut oil combination is KILLER! Nailed it buddy.
-Ben
Wow! Thanks, Ben! I love that walnut oil on oak also!
It's funny that you made one of these, just yesterday I was looking at rope and saw wooden blocks!
Nice work!
Parallel thinking is weird sometimes. Thank you!
I've always really loved the look of block and tackles and it was so cool to see how they come together! That is a beautiful display piece for sure! SNATCH BLOCK! 😂
Ha ha! They are fascinating!
@@BruceAUlrich Definitely!
Dude, as soon as the video started I said loudly "snatch block!" (receiving a confused glare from Lacey) then moments later you did the same! This is why we're friends lol
ha ha ha...yes! I love that!
Nice job Bruce. Can you elaborate on why you needed the aluminium? It seems as though those 'tabs could've been extensions of the side pieces. You said at one point that the AL wasn't structural and then they end up holding the bottom pulley and the shackle at the top.
This item will be decorative. It cannot actually hold a lot of weight, so the aluminum will pull or fold if under a serious amount of weight. However, it will hold the pulley and shackle just fine for these purposes. Does that make sense?
Great video Bruce 👍 love the look of this and the details you put into it and the coin you added was such a great addition 🔥
Thanks so much! I was so happy to see how it turned out. There were times during the build I wasn't sure how it would do.
@@BruceAUlrich yeah going into the unknown can always be a bit challenging but I think you nailed it buddy
Thats an awesome build dude! And its functional! Also thanks for showing off the glue top puller!!
I love that thing! Use it all the time!
You know I like mechanical stuff, and I think you did a fantastic job on that block. Pulley setups have always fascinated me. Nice work! (P.S. Please tell your wife that I think she does awesome camera work.)
Thank you so much, Bernie! I’ll be sure to tell her. Ha ha
Dittos-the camera work in the videos since COVID hit have been great. It wasn’t bad before, it never bothered me, but having a moving cameraman really improves things.
@@jasonbailey9139 Well, thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it and I'm glad you're liking them. I'll make them like this as often as possible. ;)
I played football all through high school so I know how to make a block and tackle...
Yeah, you do!
Round off the corners of the aluminum tabs. They'll reak havoc with the ropes.
This piece is purely for decoration. I did spend some time rounding off the sharp edges and burrs with a file though.
Beautiful! Do you think it'd be more likely to be functional if you'd used a bolt through the middle instead of the dowel?
Yes, but you would need to use steel rather than aluminum also.
Cool project! And although it appears a “small” project, there’s a lot to it! Question: it looked like if it was rigged as a block and tackle, the rope would hit the spacers because they are wider than the sheave wheel diameter. I know this is a cosmetic project, but I just wondered. Great end result though!
Yeah, you're right. There are a couple of things that would not be totally functional about this piece. It was really just for fun.
1st always wondered how the old wooden ones were made. 2rd besides having you better half help have you don't something with your videos? 3rd buddy I really liked the video, maybe your best one. Whatever you're doing keep doing it. 👍👍👍
I’m sure this might be 1 way to do it. There are always so many ways to do something. Thank you so much!
Awesome video Bruce. I don't own a lathe so I'm curious, were you using the shavings from the wood to sand it when you grabbed a handful and held it underneath?
Thank you! I used the shavings to burnish the wood a bit to make it shine and change the color just a little.
@@BruceAUlrich oh ok awesome. Good to know. Thanks!
How long did this block and tackle take to make?
So . . . reflective symmetry is necessary for a circle, but not sufficient
Thousands of years ago, folks like Archimedes (who scuttled a whole attacking navy with mirrors!) understood this geometry thing. It's ok to learn from masters (who do not have videos from 2000+ years ago).
you make it with out bearing right?
Yes, that’s correct. This is decorative.
Do you remember how many hours went into the project?
Probably 5 or 6
I think he is no idea what has he done. He just made a knick-knack. Because, the metallic parts are wrong. Metallic parts should be one piece and must be as strong as able to carry heavy.
I said as much in the video. I said this would not support weight since I used aluminum.
@@BruceAUlrich Sorry :)
