Rhea Seehorn explained that she always saw Kim Wexler as "the child of an addict"
Someone who is comfortable being in situations, often has to clean up other people's messes, but can NEVER trust anyone else to clean up her own mess.
She makes an exception when it comes to Jimmy though, and that's what has come back to bite her in the ass.

Jimmy was saying that he hid his intentions from Kim as a way of protecting her. In case she was ever questioned about it, she could maintain plausible deniability. So Kim decided that if they were married, she couldn't be compelled to testify against Jimmy, and thus he wouldn't have any excuse to lie to her about stuff. It's a pretty extreme and risky solution to the problem, but it shows you how much she loves Jimmy.

It took me 2 times to get what she was thinking. It's because Jimmy said the ONLY reason he lies is because he doesn't want her to get in trouble. So she thinks (partly) that if they're married, they have legal marital privilege and can't be compelled to testify against each other. Thus, he has no obstacles to being honest. Of course there's more going on with her character that's in play, but that's the basic idea she's entertaining. She loves Jimmy, and is trying to solve a problem that needs to be solved.
Keep watching. You got some AWESOME episodes ahead.

  • @gabishelbows101
    @gabishelbows101 3 роки тому +125

Here's a really good breakdown from reddit of why Kim would propose marriage during this fight.
"In the wake of last night's explosive twist, I've seen a lot of people express incredulity towards Kim's marriage proposal. How could she double down on the relationship, after Jimmy exposed himself as an incorrigible con artist? How can she ignore the toxicity enveloping her entire being? Baffling as it all might seem, Kim's emotional journey boasts an uncanny sense of realism, to the point where I wonder if members of the writing staff have experienced similar ordeals. It's a strikingly accurate portrait of romantic addiction and intermittent reinforcement. Speaking as someone who was once engaged to a "Slipping Jimmy"-type figure, allow me to explain my perspective. If I could describe Kim with a single word, it would be "restless." She is a lawyer of lofty ideals and moral aspirations, caught in the drudgery of a callously pragmatic profession. Her strong (though increasingly flexible) sense of ethics probably stems from her abusive childhood, during which she developed internalized guilt to bridge the "moral gap" caused by neglect. Because of this clash between her wants and reality, and her unwillingness to examine her own trauma, she is perpetually dissatisfied with her present circumstances, unable to develop consistent self-esteem, and absolutely petrified of being abandoned. This makes her the perfect target for a volatile, compulsively dishonest partner like Jimmy. For those who've never found themselves in such a relationship, it would be easy to assume that Kim loves Jimmy DESPITE his untrustworthiness, DESPITE his duplicity, and therefore wonder why she won't draw a line. But those are EXACTLY why she's drawn to the relationship, which means her bond only INCREASES the more erratic Jimmy becomes. She craves that rush to distract from her discontent and allow herself to "let loose." Notice how she became "checked out" from the relationship in season 4, in the absence of any drama or high-stakes excitement. And notice how she only recommitted after they pulled off a successful con. She is dependent on the upswings and downswings that come from his wanton behavior, from the danger of their elaborate schemes. Not just emotionally: it's an actual chemical addiction. This brings me to the horrifying topic of "intermittent reinforcement." Put simply, relationships with INCONSISTENT positivity, with massive gulfs between highs and lows, actually foster a greater type of "connection" than healthy ones, due to the massive chemical spikes that accompany the "good times." Her disappointments with Jimmy, her constant anxiety over what he might do, only means that the euphoria of their later triumphs will resonate all the more intensely. If she knew if/when they would come, they would be predictable, and therefore comparatively dulled. He is her opioid. He is her drug. That's why my interpretation of last night's final scene differs from much of what I've been reading. I don't think her 180 degree turn towards marriage was simple stubbornness, of which Kim has plenty. I think she emotionally plummeted after Jimmy betrayed her, and then emotionally skyrocketed when Kevin actually agreed to his terms. While she wouldn't have consciously admitted it, his inexcusable actions sated her addiction, thus reinforcing her commitment. Maybe I'm projecting somewhat, but this is how I've interpreted everything. If you were perplexed by Kim's behavior, and considered it a flaw on the writers' part, hopefully this provides a plausible account."

Jimmy blames himself for Chucks death. He tore him down in court, set him up at the insurance, which led to the breakup between Chuck and HHM, which absolutely was the cause for Chucks suicide. Bc of this he subconciously thought about rescuing people from fires all throughout season 4 (when he makes up a story of Huell saving people from a church fire in Coushatta, when he proposes a plan to light a fire at the courthouse to then save a judge in order to regain his reputation etc). He cant face that pain and guilt tho, and Howard basically admitted that he thinks Chuck mightve killed himself bc of him. So Jimmy can project that guilt on Howard, put the blame on him. Also, the job offer aggravated those feelings since Jimmy knows it's too late now, he's in bed with the cartel. He's on a road he likely won't be able to get off of. If Howard had hired Jimmy earlier, he still couldve gotten with Kim, and without having to endanger her and her reputation, Chuck might still be alive and Jimmy could be set for a prosperous life in happiness. Bc Howard didn't hire him, denied him that opportunity, Jimmy can, in his mind, put the blame for all the terrible choices he made throughout the show and that led him to where he is, on Howard.

  • @xxpaygexx

Kim likes helping people, it's what she lives for. It validates everything else she does in her life.
Jimmy is always down. He's always in the dirt doing the dirty, amoral thing, provided he can justify the end result.
She needs him around because he's a constant source of someone needing help and he needs her because as long as Kim says it's okay he can do anything he feels ne needs to.
They functionally can't break up right now because they're so codependent on each other.

Jimmy resents that Howard found himself again after Chuck's death because Jimmy only found Saul, not Jimmy.

Jimmy is someone who has done awful things consistently but then regrets it and may be a good person beneath it all, whereas Kim has done good things more consistently but is tempted by the more rebelious nature within her that Jimmy brings out. It was a masterpiece from HBO that lasted for 4 seasons in the late 90s, it was so ahead of its time. I recommend everyone to watch it. You can find all the episodes here on youtube. It's so worth it. I discovered here on youtube last year and I freaked out when Jay Johnston showed up in this season of BCS.
oh and btw, Paul F. Tompkins who voices Mr. Peanutbutter is on Mr. Show as well.
The "Pre-Taped Call-In-Show" sketch from Mr. Show is literally the most funny and genius shit I've ever watched in my life. So there was one of the most jaw dropping endings to an episode ever. Kim and Saul are such complicated characters you could have several different breakdowns of them and they would all be at least kind of right. To put it simply Kim and Saul love each other but are also addicted to each other. Saul is addicted to Kim's approval while Kim is addicted to the chaotic drama Saul/Jimmy brings to her life. Plus being married provides them a legally protected status which means Saul will have no excuse to lie to Kim.
You guys still haven't figured out why Saul doesn't like Howard? It's the same reason he didn't like Kevin either. They're self important assholes who think they're better than everybody and look down on guys like Saul. He sees them as Chuck.

I feel like Jimmy was expecting Kim to leave him for that, I think he's either trying to push everyone 'normal' out of his life (both to protect them, and from his own sense of rejection from that world) or he's just trying to tear it all down around him.
(Mostly unrelated prediction below, it might be a bit spoilery for the rest of this series)
