Extremely cool content and greatly appreciated insight. It’s very refreshing to see someone with kendo experience actively competing against HEMA fencers, and the active use of kiri kaeshi is very cool. Great fencing and keep up the good work.

Am I misunderstanding? Is there a practical use for kirikaeshi? I always thought it was just an exercise in kikentai? To me, it looked like the kote was the most obvious target.

In kendo, it's just an exercise. But if you use katana against a longer weapon like a longsword or rapier, you will need to work to get past the point. But if you do, you can perform continuous cuts in high-speed once you get close and kiri-kaeshi gives the most fundamental exercise to understand this. Keep in mind that there are different kinds of kiri-kaeshi. The most basic is kiri-kaeshi to strike men, but there are variants like kote-kirikaeshi and dou-kirikaeshi and even different mixtures of other combinations. In my experience, I have seen someone block 5 strikes with a rapier using the rapier cup when I get past the point to close range while executing kiri-kaeshi, but the 6th or so strike from kiri-kaeshi typically lands.
