I think S&E disagree. They think it’s one of the worst years for American cinema.

Raging Bull is possibly one the best American films of all time.

It's funny how they change their views on nominees, in 1984, he selected Dr. Hang Ngor for Supporting Actor even though he agreed it was a Lead Role

Wow, imagine thinking Ordinary People is a better film than Raging Bull....unbelievable that it won the Oscar.

Both are excellent I'd say, I'd say raging bull is more artistic, I could relate to both, 1980 was just such a strong year for films I'd say. I think that The Elephant Man and Tess are also fantastic.

I would have probably given Lynch the directing nod for Elephant Man, but Pesci definitely should have won for best supporting

Ordinary People ended up winning Best Picture over Raging Bull, but I think it is clear which has stood the test of time better. More than forty years later, people still talk about Raging Bull. Honestly, when's the last time you heard anyone talk about Ordinary People?

They were actually 4/5 because they both admitted Hutton was the ringer (as the actual leading actor of the film) submitted as Supporting Actor.

Siskel was right Spacek won the AA for Best Actress, Steenburgen won too BSA.

Well - that year's Oscars were so predictable - Both Spacek - De Niro - and Steenburgen all swept the Critics and Golden Globes - the only toss up was in the Supporting Actor Race between Hutton and Pesci

Raging Bill takes BP, Director, actor, supporting actor and supporting actress. Sissy Spacek takes actress.
    Hutton is lead period.

I gave my picks earlier down the comments
I chose Raging Bull as Best Actor, Supporting Actor, and Director
      Ellen Burstyn as Best Actress
      Eileen Brennan for Supporting Actress
I totally agree with your comment on Timothy Hutton being the Lead
If Donald Sutherland had been nominated for Supporting Actor, I would have chosen him, but back then, the studios would not have placed him in that category
However, even though I gave Raging Bull 3 of the top awards, I'd still pick Ordinary People as Best Picture
It touched me more personally and it's a movie I would watch if it was playing now over Raging Bull , even though I also think that movie is also a Masterpiece
