I named my daughter after this song. Today is her 33rd birthday and I just had to listen to this song again and share it with my daughter again. Thanks Donovan, it's still a beautiful song.
I was a guest of Donovan's as he prepped for his concerts in Sacramento, CA, for three years in a row. He was so kind and I was just a 17-year-old kid the first time and was just learning to play the guitar. I can not forget those moments, learning about lighting and such as well as how things needed to be. We talked, ate and had a good time. What a great fellow!
I met Donovan at Amoeba Records in Hollywood a few years ago. He signed my Mellow Yellow album and I showed him a picture I drew of him and he signed it as well. His response to the picture was, "Ohhhh!" Then I told him that he was better than Dylan, he smiled and said, "Ohhhh! lol That was so cool!
Heartfelt. Remembering all the previous great grooves of SUNSHINE SUPERMAN and MELLOW YELLOW and suddenly hearing his mellow, introspective side on LALEÑA and being very moved. Thank you, Mr D.
@romantichouse : This is wonderful. Happy Birthday to your daughter. And I have no doubt that you must be real proud of your daughter as much as you love this song. Thanks DONOVAN from everyone here.
This song has been floating around in my head all day, thinking about his slow vibrato. It is the first song that I looked up when I came on today. Thanks for posting!
I am 31 and I was named after this song.....this is a sad song and today i feel this way.....but gosh how many people were named after this song? I am lelania, and I go by Lanie....and I LOVE my name as I thought noooooone else had it. oh well I guess were alll part of a special club
Saw Deep Purple perform this live at the Albert Hall in '69, until now didn't realise it was one of Donovan's.......great to see this, the original, thanks for posting.
I am named after the song as well. Also I have a signed picture of him he signed it when my parents met him and my mother was pregnant with me. I love this song and my name
You are lucky to have been named after this exquisite song. It is, and always has been, a personal fave of mine from all his storied career. Oh, and I'm 58, so I was around when he first started out. He was supposed to be the "English Dylan" because he was a flat-out "folkie" in the beginning.
The first version that I heard was Deep Purple's cover on their 3rd album. I put that and this in my Donovan playlist. Thanks for the upload from Italian (?) television!
I first heard this on Shades of Deep Purple as a cover version. I was intrigued as to why Deep Purple didn't have a hit with this song, but now I get it. The original was much better.
I was thinking the exact same thing. It sounds like a mis-timed canned laughter track or something. Maybe Elvis walked across the stage out of camera's view or something.
Hello! My name is Justin Martell. I am currently working on a documentary about Candy John Carr. He played bongos for Donovan in the 60's and can be seen doing so in this video. Do you have a higher resolution version of this video? Thank you!
I know it's been talked about a lot but what do you think he means by 'arty tart, la di da' ?? lalena is making herself look pretty and sweet before going out?
Yes, to me its like 99% of surety of John Cameron Quartet backing. They had a very good rapport with each other. I really do not have any source details exactly, sorry.
Yeah, it is a sad song. Isn't it about the streetwalker character in "The Threepenny Opera?" BTW, why does the audience clap at 1:13? Are they just reacting to the brilliant lyrics "paint your face, with dispair?" Anybody know.. b/c I've never quite heard an audience do that before. Great song!
Oh my goodness , first time I have heard this song,I'm 61 it's amazing thank you Donavon it's nice to have a magical moment especially nowadays 👍
I named my daughter after this song. Today is her 33rd birthday and I just had to listen to this song again and share it with my daughter again. Thanks Donovan, it's still a beautiful song.
"Lalena" isn't actually another name for the Moon, as the ancient greek Salena/Selena/Selene, latin Luna, Lena etc?
My name is my daughter that too she'll be 47 in October and I was told by a friend who lives in Hawaii it means warm yellow daytime sun.

I am very tired and very sad
The poet, the pacifist, the philosopher. So love this song and man.
Love this song and Donovan!

He is better than Dylan, that's the truth...
Love all the beautiful musicians playing with him. So lovely to look at. Such lovely young men.
...Lynette Lalena...
Youth is wasted on the young, i'll take your word for it..im 17
I love it! When I'm happy, when I'm sad this song is always the time. Beautifully insane

This is a beautiful song by Donovan
Harold Mcnair on flute, beautiful.

Brings back memories! Wow.
I was named after this song as well :) And everybody tells me it sounds like a melody. But mine is spelled Lalenia
Like in the Anita Kerr cover.
"The Doors used to get all the groupies in the leather pants. I got the girls with the book bags," Donovan. Tru dat.
Such a beautifully sad song.
My dad named me after this song.
I'm sixteen.
But my mom made him spell it like it sounds.
La-lan-ya. there ya gooo.

Thanks for the confirmation and upload. Even amongst the many stellar Donovan vids we now have access to, this is really special.

Exquisitely simple & beautiful song, like "Young Girl Blues". Observations.
The first version that I heard was Deep Purple's cover on their 3rd album. I put that and this in my Donovan playlist. Thanks for the upload from Italian (?) television!
Si, è la televisione italiana.
Totally divine. I loved this song when I was a teenager. But there was a better recording of it on a record I taped from a friend of mine.
I first heard this on Shades of Deep Purple as a cover version. I was intrigued as to why Deep Purple didn't have a hit with this song, but now I get it. The original was much better.

@Porthlevenfan Without being absolutely sure I'd say it is - Harold McNair, "The Debonair" as Donovan calls him on the live LP from, well, 68-9?
zooooo moooiiiii ❤
A fly lands on Dono at the end!
I was thinking the exact same thing. It sounds like a mis-timed canned laughter track or something. Maybe Elvis walked across the stage out of camera's view or something.
the flutist is Harold McNair, he was a great promise but died early
classic .... for you doctor ....
Yes sir.
@romantichouse I am named after this song, too! Any idea as to the origin of the name?
Yes Indeed.

think it might be a Spanish name which would have a squiggle over the top of the 'n' to make the Lalanya pronounciation.
could be the festival hall london? very good version, was it harold 'the debonair' m'cnair on flute?
Is that a bee / fly caught up on his hair at 2:46?
@5inthehole : that's your love in life
I know it's been talked about a lot but what do you think he means by 'arty tart, la di da' ?? lalena is making herself look pretty and sweet before going out?
Sr Stefanov -It means she is irrelevant. A sad life
Anyone know where this was recorded. Looks like John Cameron on piano, Tony Carr on drums and Harold McNair on flute [I think]
Barry Monks i wanna know too
Yes, Harold McNair on Fl.
Any source details on this one MrSimonads? Never seen this clip, looks like the John Cameron Quartet backing, but I'm not sure.

Bill Dana on drums.
So am i the only one who saw the fly at 2:47 ?

I think because it was such a perfect line. And it is.
es u n logro porque no esta haciendo playback ni sincronizacion de labios
Pretty song...except for that clapping in the middle....what was that? Another show being recorded?

One of the guys behind him looks alot like a spanish version of Mick Jagger.
All due respect, the song is about a British actress named Lottie Lenya. It's a tribute to a beautiful lady-so what are you so stressed about.
All due respect, but the song is about a German actress named Lotte Lenya
@@MartinH52 i have no recollection of my comment. but i was probably correcting someone more off base than me. lol
It was about her role as a lady of the night. He scrambled the name a bit and called it Lalena ... 🖤🕯️🖤
