I saw Donovan at the Seattle Opera House late 1968. After a break, Donovan came on stage, sat on a big bean bag chair, only his accoustic guitar, no microphone and sang Lalainia. You could have heard a pin drop! Memorable!
Donovan Leitch mother had a sister Elspeth Jean Leitch.... she moved to N.Z.with husband John kenneth Green...I met their son Kevin Ian Green had his daughter haidee Kelly Green they all have same features Haidee beautiful born 2 April 1977..nice child no tattoos no drugs no trouble ..... 😊 glad you enjoyed listening to Donovan. ✌ ☮ 🕊
This song has a special place in my heart... I had the pleasure of seeing him live in concert in my teens (60s) when he first released this song. He came on stage, sat on a large pillow and sang into the knight with his magical soothing voice.... I attended the concert with someone that knew him, my art school friend at the time, her name was Rona...it was a magical evening!
Beautiful song . Donovan is perfect voice and great songwriter . Love his look her. This song "Lalena" is masterpiece. A great moment from the musical 60's Love you Donovan ❤
After all of these years of loving music from this era I just today bought Donovan's "Greatest Hits" record, THIS song is so fine, he has such grace within his vibrato, what a voice.
Those are my favorites to, I saw him in Santa Barbara many years ago, here I realize what a beautiful voice he had that I didn’t appreciate fully in the 60s, This beautiful Scottish Taurus. I also love the song not well known “mad John’s escape.” And “Atlantis. “ He was one of the most sensitive song writers/singers. By the way aren’t you a singer Rosie? I remember your name back in the day
My mothers name is Lalainia, pronounced the same. She always gets compliments on her name and my grandfather named her after this song. I will always connect her with this song.
The song is named after an actress that Donovan liked very much who did a character in a stage play musical and movie that Donovan liked The actress' name was Lotte Lenya from the 1920's/30's
I am named Donovan, after Donovan, and I have only recently begun to appreciate the great love my father must have been wanting to share with me from before the time I was actually born this time around. God Bless you, Lalena
Just as contrast to other reminiscences to music: As a child I heard this, and, as is usual for surfers. it remains, elastic, in the mind, surely for the lifetime of neural connectivity. So, suddenly remembering it, out of the blue, as it were, while considering a marvelous and beautiful girl I once knew, who had written me of her choice to return to Kyiv - and Kyiv is become a dangerous place these 3 days of February's end and early March. (we, dancing ballet to Russian rock music one Christmas night in an exotic carpet store, holiday shoppers clustering at the door to watch - "I wanted to be ballet dancer when young. Was told, 'you will be skater' " she recounted. ) Tatiana - Tanya - is not Lelania (will you, i hope, be warm this night? And you, listener?) The song, arcing with my mind and body in the Blue and Offshore of a La Jolla winter reef, alone, seemed always incongruous. It is, rather, as if about a prostitute, waking as night falls, another night, a life, of loveless intimacy. Donovan Lietch sings it with the nuance and sorrow of a heart's witness to that fate of too many Slavic girls turned out by cruel men. The cold thin snow of February, the exhaustion and deprivation, the portent of meaningless war, is very like such a cold destiny. - tangled in my twin paradoxical beauties, while others, You?, Her?, live in a darkness like the obscuring rainy sleet I see now approaching the forest, I would that you all lived capturing Sun and Blue and Falling Rainbows of the wind, taking only spray from Life's Exuberance.
When you touch the genius We all have inside As often as Donovan has. Your work will become A part of The Order of the Universe as well .Therefore Perfect !
This was the best version of Donovan; he stayed anchored to his folk roots but was full-on exploring other instruments, soundscapes, philosophies. This transition album captures a bright young artist starting to stretch his wings. His next album (Hurdy Gurdy) would be a magnificent psychedelic-folk explosion 💥😁
I have loved this song by Donovan for soo many years...my late husband introduced me to his music back in the 60's~~~~~Saw him perform live in the 80's...Just as Beautiful, too~A one man show~Love comes out everytime he sings~Thanks for sharing~
Never heard this song before tonight. I don't know how! I loved it instantly, moments ago when I first heard it by Deep Purple. And love this version even more. Why oh why didn't I hear this back in the very early 80s, as a teenager, when I was just discovering 60s and 70s songs, and rejecting the often rotten 80s songs...and learning to play my guitar in my bedroom?? This song would've instantly gone to the top of my personal guitar practice list. Life is too short to listen to bad music...just because the whores of the music industry throws it over the fence at you. Let it bounce off! If it's not any good. And instead look for sublime music like this. The lost and excellent songs that, though old, will be new to you! I will be listening to this, in all its yet to be discovered versions for MANY, MANY decades to come! Thank you for putting it up!
An all-time favorite Donovan song. I got his autograph once, and I smile whenever I see it and remember where I was during this, Season of the Witch, or a dozen others. Thank you for sharing.

It reached #71 on the Australian Kent Music chart... I saw another lip synching video of Donovan doing this song. No doubt one would prefer a live performance, but don't forget, he wrote the song and he sang on the original recording, so he's not misrepresenting himself. What you see is a visual but not audio performance of the song. If you are in the music business, this is not unusual. As much as I admire Bob Dylan, I challenge those who think Donovan was inferior to or copying him...did Dylan ever write something like this?
Who would ever think such a thing? They were friends. Bob liked Donovan's music very much. No need to pit one against the other.
