Just so you know, the stock hp of a 1976 124 Spider was not 118. That might have been for the Euro spec version. The US version was a modest 86hp. True story.
I´m for deleting the US bumpers on this project. They look expecially ridiculous on small Euro cars - like for example on the MG B or this.
I wonder if the original EU bumpers are available at little cost?
@@QALibrary they were at some point as repros with questionable quality and fitment - still are for the MG. Don´t know if they are for an early Fiat like that...
I agree. Just delete the bumpers entirely. It will look +400% better.
About any bumper from 1969 up should fit with little difficulty. The later model bumpers were mandated by the US government as safety features.
Get rid of those bumpers!! They are way too heavy. If you want to spend some money see if you can find the aftermarket Abarth style.
It’s great to see you pivot on your channel and let people who know about cars learn with you.
I also say that before the turbo kit goes on, you should change the head gasket, and while you are in there, the timing belt and water pump.
Yeah, I was looking at that timing belt too.
HG is not needed. 15psi boost is not very extreme. It will hold for a while. Timing belt + waterpump: good idea.
@@jfv65 Yes and no. That's a lot of additional cylinder pressure applied to a part that was never meant to see that much. And in what condition is the existing head gasket? Look at the condition of the whole car....
124's were head gasket touchy but nowhere near as bad as the 128's! The 128 had retorquing done after initial startup and before it was loaded onto the ship. The dealer was instructed to do so immediately upon arrival. The customer was required to retorque at 500, 1500, 3000 and every 3000 miles from then on. Thats a bunch of retorquing!
@@johngaither9263 Wow, crazy-
I love the fact you are recycling as many parts from other cars as possible!
I’m 3/4 done with restoring my first classic car-a ‘72 Fiat Spider. I’ll be watching every episode!
A friend of mine had a '74 in high school. What a fun ride. Another friend had a 128 in college. What a hunk of junk!
@@99boiledeggs57 I love the Pininfarina design of the spider. I’ve rebuilt the engine, transmission, suspension…the car is awesome, especially for its time.
'72 was a great year for them. Just before the emissions and safety crap ruined them.
I’m so glad you and Wizard are doing this. Can’t wait to see it run
Thanks for the 'step by step' on the process... looking forward to watching the videos.
Chrome bumperettes
very interesting project
Love the way you know your tools and grabbing a bargain.
I can't wait to hear the Turdbo run
Personally, I'd tuck and narrow the bumpers or remove them entirely.
Or get bumperettes from the late 60's models.
@99boiledeggs57 He could, but I didn't suggest it because I've never liked the look of bumperettes.
Natural born UA-camr . Enjoy your style and presentation . Great project . After the turbo could you do a LS1
Great video, keep them coming
Wow, So cool your video came up. I watch Wizard and Hoovie and always say to myself to join Daniel -San but move on and never hit the link. Well today the stupid UA-cam algorithm actually worked. So I'm thrilled to be a new member. Your skills and talent are appreciated. This from a manufacturing engineer. Look forward to seeing you each week!!!
You are scrounging wizards goody box
Excellent !
Those energy absorbing bumpers were almost 15mph bumpers. I would leave them. I owned 7 Fiat 124s in my past and I liked those bumpers. If some ass in a parking lot hit your bumper most times there would be no damage to my cars.
I love the idea of the turbo since the bottom end of engine was a 5 main bearing and the journals were as big as some small V8 engines. The brakes will be a problem since the calipers would corrode and make the piston stick often. Had it happen all the time. If new calipers are available just replace all 4 along with the master cylinder. Don't forget about the rear brake compensator on the rear axle.
I was an odd ball I suppose, I loved my Fiat 124s.
I'd dump the bumpers. This car is better suited for rally use in its condition. Will never be a cruiser. You aren't going to the store in it.
DMC Crimpers.... There I was, in the US Air Navy working Aircraft Electronics and the 'Go To' for trouble shooting complex out of spec systems issues related to connector and wire repair. My first aircraft, the A7 Corsair II, had a DMC Kit of 7 total tool cases with one case alone holding over 2,000 line items, both durable and consumable tooling, and a total of over 12,000 individual parts that you HAD to account for every time you checked it out of the Tool Room, once you got the side of the Aircraft to work on it, when QA/CDI inspection was complete and again when you turned it in to the Tool Room. My last few years, I was the Manager for the Tool Room of a Composite Squadron that supported a total of 5 different platforms, SH-60s, MH-60s (yeah, totally different DMC kit, whole aircraft used smaller wiring than the older SH-60 did), P-3 Orion, S-3 Viking and C-130 Hercules, with duplicate kits for the P-3 and S-3 aircraft for a total of 7 DMC Kits that contained from 5 to 10 DMC Cases, plus 2 additional DMC Accessory Kits one for EMI Metal Shielding and one for a new Armor Coaxial Cable in the MH-60S Knight Hawk. I know DMC Crimpers..... I don't know if the company is still located next door to Universal Studios Nickelodeon Studios on I-4 but it used to be right there. Wait to do the Nick Studio Tour and right across the fence was DMC Company.
This was very interesting, Daniel. Thank you for giving us an update. I look forward to the next one.
This is awesome stuff…..people need to subscribe and watch this!
As always, awesome.
Y-axis is always the vertical .... this of the "stalk" of the Y - it's a vertical line. Easy way to remember :)
I have had a Fiat 124 , poor man's ferrari !
I had a Triumph Spitfire. Poor mans Jag.
Awesome video
Definitely get rid of those awful Federal-spec bumpers. This is a great project Dan - I love these sorts of cars and projects over any supercar or high money builds.
I am so looking forward to watch you put this together. Also, I like the bumpers.
Every small convertible I've had was extremely prone to being backed into while parked. No bumpers are smexxy but in my experience it's an expensive aesthetic in the long run.
Hell yes, on bumper delete
I grew up in three of this model before I was 12; red, black, and brown. My Dad was a big fan. I say, keep the stock bumper setup. :)
the DMC tool is called a Bootlace Ferrule crimper. They should be used a lot more often than they are. You should be able to buy a more simpler version for under $100.
You need a pointer stick. The camera is changing focus often whenever your hand is in frame.
Other things you can do:
1. Be in-frame. Sit the camera on something to stand still and just be in the frame.
2. Powerpoint presentation. A.k.a. slideshow.
3. Camera be further away. If you like the hand gesturing and pointing as your niche habit and style, then camera needs to be further away.
I'm not sure if you plan to reinforce the pistons and con rods, but if not - I predict that engine is going to blow.
I woul say in my humble opinion. Get bumper closer to body, so that there will little to no gap in between. Would look good. Keep it up.
I'm curious to see how you'll modify the factory intake to take the Acura injectors instead of the Bosch setup. As for the bumpers; I'd leave them, but tuck them closer to the body. That is a very popular mod in the VW world. BTW - math is hard.
can't wait to see more
Please don't replace the front bumper ?
Work around the front bumper
👍
SUBSTANTIAL,Daniel-San
Find out if you can just remove the rubber from the front bumper. If the bumper has the same dual tube profile all the way across it could look very good. If it isn't all chrome then use paint?
franken fiat .... very nice .... thanks for not calling it a turd ..keep up the good work.. franken fiat ......sounds like a daily to me
You are a properly smart dude, dude. Liking this very much.
Dump the bumpers if you can!
Awesome project
Exciting project! It's like my own project, but with people knowing how to work on it & the garage with tools (motivation)...
My custom wish list:
1. Cool seats
2. Coil over shocks
3. Roll bar (to stiffen the body & "frame")
4. Oriental rug (cheap) for the interior..
5. Independent suspension in the rear, modern rack & pinion with performance suspension....
6. Fiberglass racing bumpers
(Mrs Wizards sales should cover it... 😅 )
Flip the bumpers over
The curve on the end seems to match
No bumpers, make it as beautiful as the original design!
Love it Go a smaller classic bit of Chrome Bumper prabably a Euro spec just to bling it up Love the build great white boarding nice and simple but you did cover it all well done, put the prices down as well and add it up but you were too good at covering the improtant bits excellent look forward to Phhfftt noises soon
I think that you should put a supercharger in the 124, not a turbocharger, and make her a Volumex.
Good luck finding one....
Why not get a first generation Camaro front bumper and narrow it in the middle. New ones are extremly cheap. Any way you will get the job done. Great video. Bill
Isn't the in-line 4 cylinder head a crossflow design? ie. the intake ports are on one side and the exhaust ports on the other side.
If yes, then I would recommend a crossflow intercooler. Intercooler entry on the passenger side, intercooler exit on the driver's side.
The bumper looks like one for a bumper car. Down size it. I will be watching.
Thanks for sharing your plans! Looks good! Running hard line back to the tank?
Keep it coming Daniel! Who's is that Citroen XM behind you at the end?
I noticed that too!
Bumper delete please. The spyders look nice without. Great channel!
All makes sense... great to potentially use all those leftover parts.
You should consider opening up some more cold air inlets in the front lower valance, and try fitting a Triumph TR6 front air dam to help force more air into the engine bay.
The NHTSA mandated 5mph bumpers in the 1970's. The 124 Spider came out in 1966, with much nicer body hugging bumpers.
1975 to be exact, I had a 1974 which had the Euro bumpers.
Bumper delete and air to air intercooler would be my choice
Make it happen 👊👊👊
Daniel san is becoming a turbo yoda.
Yep lose the bumper! The 124’s have always been a nice looking car! Can’t wait to see this little car rip.
looking at your engine bay at 18:25 I could suggest a used-rebuild turbo from the second generation Eclipse it's a Garrett T-25 and you could probably fit it easy on the OEM exhaust manifold of the Fiat
You could use factory 2nd gen DSM parts. Already using the T25, so why not the rest. It's already proven, and on the used market, it's cheap.
I wrote the same and looking at the engine bay around 18:25 it looks like there's enought space to even use the mitsu exhaust housing and re-use the Fiat exhaust manifold with the right flange welded or fitted on it
@@alain99v6 Dang I didn't look at it that close. Another thing, at just 200 hp he could use a 1st gen side mount, and 450cc injectors.
I would definitely remove that bumper, and either have none, or see about one of the chrome only bumpers from earlier years of the car.
The bumper is in the way, so YES, by all means remove it. If the car becomes a running, driving vehicle again someday we can address it. I searched images and saw a red 72 Spyder on Bring a trailer (2023) with no front bumper, it accentuates the curves of the car. I want to see your engineering and fab skills. Good luck!👍
Bumpers are perfect place to sit i vote stay
Bumper delete. Find a thin strip of chrome or stainless.
Loose the bumpers. ❤ interesting project.
Great project. Don't use the US-bumpers, if you can find some european ones, they are much nicer. Or none.
My father bought a new Fiat 124 Sport Coupe in 1968, and had it until 1972. It rusted away.
Peter Larsen from Denmark.
Liked and subscribed.
Remove bumpers 💯
I’d leave the bumper or find a euro bumper. Damage from being backed into would be less severe
Sure reminds me of an MGB I had long ago.
I think cobra style bumpers
If you can go back to earlier all chrome bumpers or just remove them.
Abarth style black bumperettes
Interesting project. Is there a European spec bumper? Might find one. FYI, you won’t “see” us on the next video, but we will see you. Most UA-camrs sign off this way, but…..
I cannot wait to see how this turns out. Quite the Fiatstein when you transplant all the Evoke and 308 parts. Count me in on the bumper delete. Had a friend that raced a 124 in SCCA Class E? Had no bumpers and looked great.
Yes. Ditch the bumpers.
Maybe do it the BMW guys do drill a hole in the bumper shocks, and drive it into a wall to push the bumper and tuck it in. Stancewoks just recently did it to one of his BMW if you look at his videos
Keep the bumpers for the old school look
Pininfarina does not approve of the name. Love the content.
Dump the bumpers, no q.!
Yes , hate the bumpers 😮
Haven’t seen pin crimpers since I left the USAF! Probably crimped 3000 pins during my career.
Great video!
Try not to say "but...Yeah". Technically the '76 Fiat 124 Spyder engine had 118 PS, or metric horsepower. That's 116 horsepower in the US.
I can't wait to see how this turns out! DEFINITELY ditch the bumpers!
And here I thought working brakes were over rated.
Is there a way to keep the bumper and simply make it fit nicer and tighter?
leave the bumpers on
Could you use a oil cooled turbo like we use on desiels?
No new larger electric fan?
I had two Spiders and they had bumpers that were close to the body not like your bumpers. maby mine were an early year.
bumpers need to be addrested maby somthing from 70,73 124
Get rid of those bumpers! The car will look much cleaner without them.
The transmission can handle the doubling of HP? I know you visited it underneath but can't remember if you addressed its limitations.
Bumper delete
Remove the bumpers!!!
Please clean the engine before wrenching.
Did you look for a rebuilt Garrett?
Land Rover parts on a Fiat? Recipe for failure?
Loose the bumpers!!!
I have a couple old turbos from my wrx I would give you for free if your interested I have a Mitsubishi td04L with 50k miles that its still good and i have a IHI vf48 with around 80k miles on it that is still good. The td04 is about the same as the t25 it just doesn’t spool as quick. Im located in colorado so I would have to ship them to you
