I did this as well on my N/A 2013 G37 Sedan, total cost for everything including trans cooler, 1 piece aluminum driveshaft, floor jack and a few other misc items was about $2,300. I also have detailed videos on my UA-cam channel on the install + a breakdown video on the parts and cost for everything I used. Sharing to help out the VQ Fam, just like Alvin from Infinitibrothers helped me when I reached out to him. Thanks Boost for bringing more awareness to this topic, keep the grind going, love your videos. Also thanks for sharing all your knowledge on the G/Z/Q platforms as well 💪.
I did it. Cost me $1200 for one from a 2017 q60 red sport with 30k (kilometers), and a few days of work. Try to get the transfer case, crossmember, and mount all together if you can to save yourself from modifying the crossmember. You're able to use your original front driveshaft this way as well. Also, the transmission cooler lines need to be bent or pulled on tight to reach the ports on the transmission, or switched to longer custom lines. You will need to get a different rear driveshaft and possibly change the pinion yoke on the differential. The four bolts on the vr bellhousing don't match up. You can drill them out and use a bolt with nut. Make sure the hole you make for the crank sensor is big enough. I had mine machined at a welding shop, with the original filled in with weld. The hole was the perfect size, but the surface of the bellhousing is shaped differently and caused the ecm to not pick up the crank sensor. I solved this by shaving the crank sensor down so it sat correctly, but will mill away some more of the bellhousing in the future.
As someone with a VR trans on my FBO 2013 G37 Sedan (342whp/270wtq), it's really not that noticeable of an upgrade. In fact, I would even go as far to say that my original trans felt like it shifted better and faster. And recently, I've noticed the car dropping RPM when below 2.5k rpm in a higher gear, and down shifts have dropped RPM almost like the converter isn't locking up like before. The cost difference for a VQ vs VR trans was minimal for me at least, and only cost me about $1300 including install (77k mile trans), but something about it just isn't the same.
@@kyoakland just went to check some things on the car. Cleaning my MAFs seemed to solve my RPM dip issue. Shifts still are much crisper than the original 7at. My thoughts on these transmissions are if you need a trans anyways and the price difference isn't major then go for it, otherwise the stock trans is fine. Just definitely add an aftermarket trans cooler as that helps a lot. Mine is still in the mail.
For the 3.7 q50’s the vr swap is almost a direct swap. No modifications to the driveshaft or any of that. And the valve body and tcm on the vr transmission can be used. The car would just shift like it’s a VR30 instead of the high revving 3.7 but that’s not much of a drawback.
thats what i be saying but shops keep swearing u need to change the shaft. But obv i dont wanna argue with them since they the mechanics. Where did u get yours done??
Yeah I've seen the Infiniti Brothers video on this swap on his Supercharged G37...dope shit 🔥🔥 I've been looking to getting this swap done my self but I haven't seen a AWD swap done yet or found a AWD transmission for sale. Thanks for the content tho Boost🙏🏿
PSA; To add to this I had to swap the VB on my Q at 93k it finally gave out. I got a hookup at my dealer and they got me the VB brand new and install for $2500. This only gave me another 60-100k as the VB's be dying. You get the new trans its cheaper and barely has this issue BUT the 2017 VR30 DOES still have VB issue. Get 2018+
I have had th VR trans and a new drive shaft for a year waiting the inevitable. About to pupp mine today and get started. Finding the time is tough tho.
Will this work on g37 coupe awd that’s already boosted with rear mount turbo kit? Was touching 600 hp with about 440 torque and my 7at started slipping already, tried finding more info on the swap for awd but kinda veague everywhere. Just wanna know if there is anything different that I need to do since I’m awd or if it’s the same as rwd?
The VR transmission is the best mod you can do to your VQ besides boost! Thanks again for all your videos brother! I wouldn't have started my journey with boost if it wasn't for you!
I have a 2008 G37s coupe with that clunky 5at, haha. Just bought the A2A super charger kit and am super stoked about it. Josh told me the VR 7at is going to be the best transmission upgrade for your G37s coupe. But stuff ads up. You have to get the 09+ ecu, run ecutek of course and maybe the aluminum drive shaft. Getting a quote with installation or shipped. Hopefully, it's not that expensive 😅
If you look at the old diagrams of the Eau Rouge Q50 concept they used the q70 transmission because the ATTESA system wouldn’t fit, they also plugged it up to a vr38dett, the vr30 is a perfect alternative to this older design and will hold more power stock (don’t quote me on the power figures though)
@Chris Donnelly uhhh my q70 has the ATTESA system.. all the awd models do. At least since early 2000s. Just different programming, differentials, and gear sets. The q70 system is setup very similar to the skyline/r35 at 18/82 F/R bias, when the rear spins, can go up to 50/50 bias if absolutely needed. I think the skyline was like 20/80.
So is the vr30 7at transmission faster than vq37 7at trans? Wondering if I should do the swap on my TT 370z, or go for something totally different like 1. Building the vq37 7AT trans and vb 2. Or swapping to ZF8HP
My 2014 Q50 has transmission problems (delayed shifting in 1st and 2nd... and sometimes slipping in 3rd). I am looking all over eBay, Google, forums, etc... to source a transmission and make sure I get the right one. I've watched any/all UA-cam videos about this. I am seeing RE7R01A and 31020-75X7A as part numbers for 2017/2018 Q50 transmissions.... but RE7R01A is the same part number for my 2014 transmission!? Does the valve body from VR transmission work? The only modifications I have to do is cutout a space for the Crank Angle Sensor, make sure the driveshaft fits (possibly add a spacer) and fabricate the transmission brace/mount? Once I get it into gear and drive lightly, the car shifts without issues.. If grandma drove it, she wouldn't even notice that something (torque converter? Valve body?) is bad. This RWD has 82k miles and had its Valve Body replaced at 50k under warranty. I drive it hard and plan to boost it in the future. Any help is appreciated!
Short answer you can use the 2016 and up 3.0 T transmission. It won’t write up one bolt doesn’t and you do have to switch valve body. There’s a couple of UA-camrs who have information on how to swap valve bodies
I'm about to find a VR transmission on eBay, but I'm seeing that it has the same exact code (RE7R01A). Are the models the same from 2016+? I have been searching Google and forums and can't seem to find a clear answer.
No. It will not. Get the Transgo valve body upgrade kit for your 5AT and enjoy. Thing is a tank, much more reliable than the partial-locking 7AT. I speak from 12 years experience with both.
