- Prior to releasing the Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang guitars a few years ago, Fender's Justin Norvell and Master Builder Alex Perez were allowed supervised access to Cobain's guitar collection. This video clip features photos of the rare opportunity the two of them had to lightly dismantle the original guitars and ascertain wiring schemes and pickup configurations.

Love how they used Kurt's feedback instead of Smells Like Teen Spirit or something. Nirvana was a pretty noisy band, often ending their sets with lots of feedback as they destroyed the stage.

There’s extra content on the Montage Of Heck dvd features where the director accessed Kurt’s storage facility and there were stacks of guitar cases. I want to see a full in depth look at those. Because I must’ve watched this one 100 times by now pausing and playing.

You really want a "Kurt Cobain Signature Guitar"? Go buy guitars from pawnshops and then jack with them yourself. Because that is what Kurt did. Fender carefully measuring and reconstructing his guitars is hilarious. Kurt beat the shit out of what were cheap used guitars. Funny that how before Nevermind came out you could get Fender Mustangs and Jaguars in pawn shops for $100.
I have a shitty squier strat that i got as my first electric guitar, and it has the shit beaten out of it from the couple years of me havin it. Every once in a while I think of just scrapin the damn thing,but then I think about how Kurt always liked to use shitty guitars...so I keep mine around and I just modify the piss out of it.
I would also buy a Fender Kurt Cobain Mustain..just for the sake of collecting it.
+buzzcrushtrendkill thats certainly true for the early days and Bleach era and he always had a great eye for cool looking cheap guitars, but after they signed to geffen Kurt was definitely dropping more cash for better quality gear, couple of nice strats, I think around that time he also got that beautiful old Martin he later played on unplugged.
By the time of In Utero his guitars (the two in the vid) were custom made to his specifications by Fender, I mean I doubt Kurt was concerned with every little tech aspect but he did design the Jagstang and (in my opinion) made the Mustang a much more reliable and versatile guitar with a couple of little tweeks, so it is valid to study them for people who want to know what it was like to play them, also the actual reissues didnt do the 'road worn' bullshit with all the fake scratches and crap.
Personally Im not that into Mustangs but I think his sonic blue one is a beaut and would buy one no matter who's name it was tied to.
+buzzcrushtrendkill More people need to come across this comment so they don't end up making credulous purchases. Tweaking/Modding your guitar to your own specifications or whatever you desire it to become is quite a beautiful privilege if you use the proper modus operandi.

I would consider it a honor to be able to see what guitars that remain of Kurts in person. Growing up he was why I wanted to play guitar I cherish my jagstang even though it's not a great guitar but having one of the original models Fender made is a big deal to me.

@@billcahmthe one I bought was an original and it came with the wrong color. Was supposed to be fiesta red and it came like a puke orangey pink. I tried absolutely everything to strip the paint but it was in like 30 layers. Insane. It also had an absolutely crap bridge system and the neck warped the first year I bought it where like 6 frets stopped playing. It never stayed in tune no matter what. Why they would do a “floating” bridge tremolo system is beyond me. The only way to add a standard bridge is to glue a huge chunk of wood into the bridge slot hole and then re/drill the standard bridge lug holes. Utter rubbish. I might just get a custom jagstang body from warmoth or something but specify I want a strat style bridge. Like the Cyclone from Fender. My absolute favorite. Best of both worlds! Standard bridge but the cool look and sound of a mustang with extra beef if it has humbuckers installed. I should have just sold the jagstang and bought a Telecaster or another Cyclone
Kurt Cobain was influental to me growing up in the 90s.. I think Smells Like Teen Spirit was one of the first 10 songs I learned to play. I actually listened to Nevermind recently and it brought back a lot of memories jamming along to those tunes! The Jags and Mustangs are awesome geeeetars!

2 things make this video funny to me- 1. The idea of them asking Cobain all these detailed guitar luthier questions like wood type, dimensions, pickups, wiring etc. and him not really knowing or caring what they were talking about and 2. The idea of someone desperate for a specific "Feedback Tone"!

Modify a squier cv mustang, youd have to refinish it, change the pickgaurd (if you want but the one you get will depend on what pickups you want on it) for the pickups i would get a humbucker for the bridge and a single coil for the neck

I guess I'm one of the rare people that thinks it's really cool that fender reissues musician's equipment. Even if kurt just did whatever to that guitar it's still cool. especially reissuing the jaguar was so cool. wish i could one of the NOS ones. It would look perfect with it in Daphne blue and the original black to knobs for vol/tone and the rhythm circuit to be used as a split coil where the two can blend in and out from single coil to humbucker.

Those humbuckers are CRAZY high!
They have to be, because he changed the bridge to a Tune-O-Matic (Which are mainly used on Gibsons, not made for Fender guitars at all) the strings set way higher than they’re supposed to, making it necessary to raise the pickups extra high.

No sir, The video you're thinking of Kurt is playing fiesta red Jag-Stang. A signature model he was working on. Go back and check it out, if you pay attention to his guitar you can see it is not a mustang. It does however had the mustang vibrato.
Thanks but I read he never had the red Jagstang although he did have the blue one. I saw a photo of the performance from another angle that wasn't so slanted, And it looked to me like a Mustang;

His arm was in the way of the higher part of the guitar though.

I know it might be a bit difficult to tell with Kurt's arm in the way of the first pic, But looking at the lower part of the blue guitar shows the body shape of the Jagstang which isn't there on the red one.
Austin Lucas Hmmm, well, i guess i can;t be too certain. His arm is in the way of the part that could tell us for sure. I always assumed it was a Jag-stang because they were in development at the time so there may have been some issues with them, and clearly Kurt's guitar gives out half-way through the song.

Although I was big into Nirvana, I was never inspired as a guitar player by Cobain per se. He never had "the sound" that I wanted out of my playing. There are a few other players that Fender could use to get me buy a masterbuilt guitar.
You can get a perfect copy of my 1997 Mexican Strat... But now it's called the "Ian Benjamin Signature Model" and it's $15,000...

+GReeN_IcE i got one in 2014 it was the VERY LAST one in lake placid blue, they had on amazon all the colors at the time i think it was fall. so about a year ago. its my favorite guitar bought it in a guitar shop through amazon in new jersery had it expiditied to montana took about a week. never selling this thing, i bought it for a grand, but ive seen them on sale ebay for over four times that. especaily cause i think lake placid with the stripe is the rarest color but i woulda been happy with any of them. i figure i wouldnt buyt them all up becayse there wasnt much left and the are no longer are in production. i got some great strats.

Ah, so Courtney owns the red one as well. You see, that blue Mustang there wasn't the Mustang used on the In Utero tour, rather one of 4 Mustangs built by Fender Japan for him, 3 being blue, and 1 being that red one you see there as well.
The one that Kurt used on tour that you see in all the pictures and film was the same guitar the whole time, it's not this one, but though almost identical to the other two, you can tell the difference between them by distinct yellow marks in the tort of each of them. It wasn't until recently that the toured, famous blue In Utero Stang showed up, it was recently uncovered at the Seattle EMP exhibit, it's verifiable by pictures of the guitar with Kurt on tour, and it actually still has it's DiMarzio humbucker in the bridge. I don't know who owns it.
The other two blue stangs have been known about for a while, one of them was a backup on tour, and the other stayed at home. Courtney kept one of them, (along with the red stang, apparently,) and sent the other to a kid fan shortly after Kurt's death, but when the kid's parents ran into money troubles, they sold it behind his back to a corporation which has loaned it to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Both guitars had the pickup change to Duncan along with the Red one.
Also looks like Courtney owns a black strat as well by the sticker at 0:43. Vandalism strat perhaps? When's that coming out Fender?
***** Yeah, ok, I've seen that before but never noticed the Duncan in the bridge, and the tort yellow spot says that would be Sky Stang II as his techs called it, also this one here. So the one that Kurt kept at home and never played live she sent to the kid and is now in Cleveland. Makes since. Thanks, it's hard to keep those blue Mustangs straight when they all look so similar.
Also based on pictures that I've seen she also owns the "Vandalism" strat (you can actually see the sticker on the case labeling it at one point in this video, so Fender probably saw it), the Competition Mustang and the white Univox. She more than likely owns the Jaguar as well, since Fender examined that as well and nobody else seems to know where it went after Eric who played with Hole. So Courtney owns most of Kurt's stuff, damn. Not Sky Stang I with the DiMarzio, though.
the light blue one( the one he used in In Utero) is in seattle EMP.
Newman Gan That's Sky Stang I, his main Mustang during the In Utero period and still features a Dimarzio in the bridge. He had two other identical blue ones and a red one as mentioned above, all with Seymour Duncan's. The red one actually was ordered first and came with the stock configuration for Mustangs and a Tort guard. He later routed it for a humbucker in the bridge, changed the guard, and it became a template of sorts for the blue Mustangs. You can see Kurt with the red Mustang in it's original form at a couple of shows in early to mid 93.
Carlo Von Sexron Actually, she doesn't currently posses the vandalism strat. Its on display at the EMP (experience music project) in Seattle. I saw it there a few weeks ago. Its probably his generic black and white strat that he played on Live and Loud in 93 (and many other times).
Landonias She lent it to them, just like all the other guitars. It just dawned me that the Fender guys are inside the vault that she keeps all that stuff in. I've read about it, I've seen some pictures of the Vandalism Strat being examined there, it seems the Fender guys went up to Seattle rather than having the guitars sent to them.
If you pause it at 0:25 - you can see Kurt has blacked out all the letters on Seymour Duncan except the "ur un"
