There's was two guitars that Kurt owned but never played live. A Fender Electric XII and a blue Mosrite Gospel. Out of fear of them getting stolen, he hid them in a bathtub in his mansion if I remember right. Sometime later he went to retrieve the guitars but both of them suffered severe water and sewage damage. I think the blue Mosrite was later repaired and was given to Pat Smear to play with during their '93 SNL performance. EDIT: It was a Mosrite Mark V, not a Gospel. There was also notebooks and tapes inside the bathtub. Also, some may not have known this but Kurt wrote Serve the Servants with that Electric XII.
@@jimfromdiscord.8904 No clue how it happened, but on the Kurt's Equipment website it said it was water-stained halfway up, split, and warped. Earnie Bailey, Kurt's guitar tech, offered to build a new body for it but Kurt said no.
There's also his last new guitar. A telecaster that was gifted to him by Earnie Bailey. He never played it live and is only known to have been recorded on his last sessions with pat smear in his basement. He said it was his new favorite guitar.
Two things: 1) the "Intro" of Kurt talking about In Utero was from August 11, 1993 at Edgewater Hotel, Seattle, WA (not early 1994). Second 2:31 the "Ibanez Les Paul Copy" the model it is a 1978 Ibanez PF-300 Cherry Sunburst. (Obviously the Black Pickguard and Black Pickup rings were removed) and Kurt had White Humbucker Rings with a DiMarzio X2N Humbucker in the Bridge and a Fender Stratocaster Single-Coil pickup in the Neck (most likely taken from one of Kurt's many Made in Japan Fender Strats) as Kurt usually always swapped the Bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Hotrail (except for Kurts first 3 Fender Japanese Strats the White "K" Strat, the "Endless, Nameless/Tune-O-Matic" Strat, and the "Vandalism" Strat).
Rych with the facts as always. Thanks! Btw, I don't know if you seen my reply to you on the website, but I was asking you if you had any photos of Kurt smashing the "Heart Shaped Box"?
It seems like I've been proven wrong - it DIDN'T take four years for this part to come out. Glad to be proven wrong though, so comes the end of this three-part series into Kurt's guitars, woo!
I went into this as a Kurt fan as I grew up playing in that era after watching this whole series I feel he’s very good songwriter but is overrated an should be put on trial for war crimes against musical instruments
@@tinfoilcat5446 I'm not afraid to admit my Squire Strat-o-sonic is doing all the heavylifting. I just make sounds on that thing and it sounds beautiful. I can't imagine how much better a high-end Fender could be to play - I'm sure they must be but I cannot fathom that level of quality and ease of use. I simply have no frame of reference for a guitar being better than that. It's not like they really let you fiddle with the guitars at GC anymore - they will straight up give me nasty looks.
Really awesome video! My favorite era of nirvana has always been the "in utero" era. I'd also like to recommend a new video idea. I think a really cool idea would be to make deep dive into Kurt's effects pedals. I've never seen anyone do a deep dive into Kurt's effects, I've only ever seen people talk about his most popular effects like the "BOSS DS-1" or the "Electro Harmonics Small Clone" but Kurt's effects go way deeper then that. like at one point he owned a delay pedal for a short while, and he also owned a wah-wah. Really cool video idea in my opinion. 😅
Thats a good idea, but I'm not really into effects myself, so Im not sure if the video would be that good. We'll see. Have you checked the videos that Nirvana Guitars did here on youtube? Hes doing a series on Kurts effects I believe.
@@groundguitar I have myself they are quite interesting, but he hasn’t really done a deep dive like you did with Kurt’s guitars, and thanks for replying. ❤️
Another way you can tell sky stang 3 wasn’t used if to look at the pickup switches. Kurt cut off the pickup switches bc they kept getting in the way and to stop them from accidentally switching the sound, the first 2 switches were cut off but the third one did not have their switches cut off which means he probably never used it live. Also you forgot to mention the custom shop Stratocasters he used specifically for smashing
I understand what the person is kind of saying that she feels bad! For the guitar 🎸 But let's remember guitars don't have emotions like people. But the death of Kurt cobain will always be missed and loved by fans, friends, family and it's a tragedy for sure! Let's focus on the music, and the good things he did and the happiness he left us.
@groundguitar was just wondering because u used some of the same footage in a video and mine got copyrighted. I'm new to this. Wonder if it's because I didn't put music credits?
Have you checked out Aaron Rash’s YT Channel? He’s making the In Utero IRS and has completely figured out exactly what Kurt used from a Fender Quad Reverb w a broken tube creating asymmetric distortion and one of Steve Albinis Aluminum guitars to a Veleno mustang type guitar he borrowed from him as well. He even knows which speakers and the modded superlead he used for clean tones. The dude has done meticulous research and has an amazing channel. If you’re into Kurt’s sound you have to watch it. Great work on this collection though. It’s amazing. So mush of Kurt’s sound really comes from his amps as well. Give it a watch. Thanks.
Kurt definitely didn’t get the tele two weeks before his death lol dates don’t match up there’s pictures of him with the tele backstage with the buzzcocks over a month before he passed away.

Hell yeah waiting for this video for a long time
The telecaster is currently at the rock n roll hall of fame
all these guitars deserve to be owned by someone who will play and love them like kurt did..
EXCELLENT 3 video series
Very informative and interesting
I feel bad for these guitars because their owner died
I hope my guitar dies before I do to spare it the pain of my absence.

great video! now i need one of these talking about krist's basses, lol
expected to wait months for this one too lol. nice
my favorite nirvana album
Could that Orange Fender have also been played on some TV show where it stopped working?
Maybe... What show specifically?
Recently went to Cleveland to see if Skystang III was there and yeah it’s gone. I was bummed. I wanna see one so bad. Rip Kurt
I went to the Hall as well 2 months ago. It wasn’t in its box (same box as the drill Stratocaster from the Inglewood ‘93 show).
That univox was used in the in utero recording sessions as seen in the seasons in the sun music video
Where exactly in the video? I can't spot it.
Seasons in the Sun was recorded in January 1993 in Brazil, not during the In Utero sessions
