1948 Tonka Toy Transport Semi Truck and Trailer Restoration COE Cab Over Engine 4K

  • I purchased this 1948 Tonka Toy Transport Semi Truck and Trailer on eBay February of 2022 for a total of $127.12 after shipping. I was pleasantly surprised to find this 1948 Semi COE cab was the early model, the chassis did not have the center cut out like they did in late 1948, instead it had a welded in axle mount on the bottom. When I received this truck it was complete minus the tandem rear axle was missing. It appears that someone has repainted this one a couple times. After sandblasting I ended up having a rust hole in the cab and frame which had to be welded and smoothed out. This was the first truck that I've ever attempted to remake the tires on using rubber urethane casting into a nylon mold. For my first attempt I'm extremely happy with how they came out, however to avoid bubbles next time I will be using a pressure pot instead of a vacuum chamber. I made a few mistakes on this one, and if you look closely you'll be able to see. When doing the two tone roof, I messed up a little bit of the powder and had to use some touch up paint. With everything considered, I was extremely happy with the outcome of this restoration! Thank you for watching!
Had to reupload due to 4k processing issues.

Far and above any skill I have. That being said, I had a truck like this when I was a kid (several decades ago) and one thing you may have overlooked due to the missing parts are the raised bumps that hold the stand in the up position. A light amount of force upward to click in.

I'd recommend pressure casting your resin/rtv rubber parts as opposed to vacuum casting as the pressure compresses the air bubbles and makes them mostly invisible. Also, Smooth-On has a rubber that was developed for BF Goodrich for use in creating prototype tires that they would actually put on cars and test. I believe it was called Sooth Cast 12, but I think they changed the I.D. number.
