The best HOTAS review I have seen, and probaly the best review of anything. Nice, well structured, and clear, thanks
HELL YEAH!!! Just like the real thing. I always loved testing it on the Bird. One of the few things I miss from the Navy.
Just so you know. the Play in the Buttons you were talking about. Are actually like that in the bird too.
The Side (grey "guarded") button is there for switching between DLC and Maneuver flaps and is that way on purpose. Like you pointed out, so its not easy to hit on accident when in a dogfight.
As you would expect from Jesse this was an excellent review! Honest, to the point, and informative. Thank you!
I ordered one of these earlier today... I am SO-O-O-O-O looking forward to it arriving! Thanks, you confirmed I made the right choice.
I got one along with the Warbrd, Mongoose and VFX. For the amount of money, I expected more in the trigger and button feels. But still a nice grip.
me too
your videos are great keep up the good work, thank you for showing the guns switch loved it
Thanks man,i always come to your channel when i want to see a kick ass review..
Dang that thing came close to the mark but it needs those button improvements. Especially for that price tag.
Buying this just because of immersion. Great review, spot on.
Very cool review - I do like the look of the weapon selector but at the same time I do enjoy the feel of the Thrustmaster grip / controls - especially the newer F/A-18C Hornet grip
Great video. This is the first review I have seen of this grip and it was very thorough! Just ordered the new constellation alpha. Will you be reviewing it? It seems like it will be the best grip out there for space sims!
If anyone is interested the settings on the "switching to guns" switch are; SP/PH = Sparrow/Phoenix, SW = Sidewinder, Gun = duh, M61 20mm Vulcan cannon...
Thank you I was wondering what it meant
I have the vfx grip also and i like it except for the plastic feel of the buttons, especially the brake lever.
Also, the thumb wheel is for direct lift control (DLC) on the F-14 although its good for a lot of things. It also has button clicks on either extreme on thr range of motion. Likewise the brake lever has a button click when fully pressed.
Woo-hoo I just got mine today unfortunately had to go right to work so I couldn't mess around with it. I love the feel and look of it it looks better in real life I grabbed and I was said to myself wow I love this stick!
Thanks for the great review. I really enjoy your enthusiasm... it's infectious. It doesn't hurt that you're a hottie either. 😉
Just got this grip along with Virpil’s new curved 200mm extension to go with my T-50 CM2 Base. Trying to figure out how to lock the twist.
I absolutely agree with his critiques on the trigger and pickle button, but on the others not all buttons are supppse to be light and clicky. Especially on a replica combat flight stick. TM Warthog is the standard. If you pickle a bomb or release a missile you damn well meant to bc it’s a forceful push and hold down until release. Same goes with the nose wheel steering button. Hate to accidentally activate that mug when your doing 140 knots on takeoff/landing during a stiff breeze....unless you want to witness a Johnny Knoxville version of Top Gun. These grips IRL are highly engineered and designed a certain way for a reason. The closer it is to the real thing, the happier I am.
PS. Figured out how to lock the axis. You’ve REALLY got to tighten that screw down. To the point I was concerned for the plastic. Really wish Virpil would adopt TM’s approach to the outside materials and accuracy of function. The internal are great, but the outside and fit of the grip feels cheap in comparison to the metal TM Warthog grip and the heavy (to the point I can’t easily tell if it’s metal or very hard/thick plastic) on the TM F/A-18 grip.
I’d happily pay more for that kind of product from Virpil. I did buy the TM f-18 grip after all. Maybe an optional higher tier of these grips with more accurate materials and buttons.
THANK GOD virpil makes their grips compatible with Thrustmaster's
That's really cool.
Yeah, but with the mongoose, and some other grips some buttons dont work.
You should always review the software and ease of installation of every piece of hardware. Otherwise it's not a full picture. Some people are complaining about Virpil software.
they have some great stuff coming out
Great vid, and review, damn Virpil make some great kit, and really know how to take my cash.
Thanks for the review 😁
Solid video, solid stick.
Well done
That missile/guns switch is too cool.
While I think none could say bad things about Virpil quality, I think they should make their own metallic line of sticks. I know plastics can be very durable and last you a life time and they even feel like hefty solid objects in the hand (that's what she sa... ok never mind :'P) but after I've got used to TM Warthog stick, there's no turning back now! I'm pretty sure Virpil could sell those sticks made out of (at least) decent quality aluminium. Sure, people want mostly easy to use quality product and might want plastic over some metal, but should they ever make metal versions, I think it would lure us TM Warthog fans away from TM, concerning the sticks (and not just the base).
But like I said, certain plastics are insanely durable and got a good feel to them, so I guess it's all good and fine. Just wished there were options more for metal sticks. Then again, TM stick does feel just perfect, so who am I to complain :D
Base Virpil, Stick Thrustmaster best combo for authenticity.
The "brake lever" is actually the emergency autopilot disconnect. And the wheel is for the DLC
@@jessecalder lol! I guess if it's programmable there isn't anything stopping you from using it for that. Decent alternative actually if you don't have pedals.
The way you review this stick is as if Virpil chose to put certain controls on the stick, where really the stuff is there because of the F-14. The Spring loaded thumb wheel is there as your DLC control. There isn’t supposed to be anything modular about it. Generally though I agree with the review, well done. I just feel the review was done from a weird view point.
Quick question: Can the stick be opened up? I'd like to swap the trigger for a metal component.
Ich wünsche mir Trigger aus Knochen ! Günstig und BIO dazu sehr sehr gut ausehend wen verarbeitet
Nice Review as always! Will you do a review for that new VPC Rudder pedals in the near future :D?
Ace owns all the pedals 😆
@@DanielDrake Ahaha XD
Super vidéo Thanks
Ok, I acquired this grip and have been through Virpil’s software config, through to key binding in Star Citizen. See no way to use Guns and alternative switch setting to “alternative modes”. That “feature” really needs coverage and validation that it works as you’re promoting.
Hello?
In the Virpil software I think you can set shifts so maybe use these detents as a shift
Excellent!!
HI. I got this and i am trying to figure out how to use the 4-way weapon select w/ push in Virpil software. I am trying to add more buttons funksion to the different weapon selects.
As you seem to have all the hardware can the TM target software be used natively with Virpil Bases + TM Sticks?
I seen a Virpil software video and there looked to be a modifiable USB name .. implying you can change it to spoof as a native TM device.
I'm used to TM since FLCS/TQS so Target is pretty simple and i'll be using a Warthog Throttle so all in one is a bit simpler.
Warthog joystick is not "all metal" like you claimed (because its heart is a poor-quality plastic gimbal which will wear out over time, whereas higher end Virpils and VKBs have all metal gimbals). Other than that it was a thorough and well-made review.
Quick question, does it come with the base that holds it
would you recommend pre-ordering the new virpil constellation alpha grip? does virpil can be trusted with pre-orders?
you say about the momentary button movement but your comparing what i think is an su27 stick to an F14 stick. id assume its modeled 1to1 with regards to lengths of buttons
It would be a great stick if the big 8 way hat was a toggle. I feel like a good toggle is so needed for head-look in flight sims.
@@jessecalder I meant a toggle such as in an xbox controller, a small joystick essentially. Its cool that joysticks are often a copy of real life sticks, but in real life its pretty easy to look around just by moving your head, I feel like sticks should be designed to compensate for that. But maybe thats just me.
@@yorkshire_tea_innit8097 well, you are supposed to have headtracking. This switch was made for trim.
where can i buy one?
the virpril website doesn't work, the server times our or something..
Great review. Any way you can get Winwing to send you their hotas for review also?
Virpil has promised me a discount code and I may use it to buy this if the twist function does work on a warthog base not grip as I said a minute ago
My twist and buttons arent working on this stick got it today am i missing something
Snake Eater Company,
I hope to receive a reply on this topic as I am begining my journey into professional aviation. Being that you are a CFI. What are your thoughts on using Microsoft Flight Sim X or X Plane as a training aid while in the courses with course guides and material available? And if so which Sim would you think is best for this application?
Thank you for your time.
Any plans to get the CM2 throttle and/or the Alpha grips? I've got both on pre-order and honestly just can't wait to get them both in hand. Big upgrade from my T16000M Hotas
@@jessecalder I picked up a WarBRD base along with a Delta and CM2 grip about a month ago and the difference between that stick and my T16KM was night and day. I logged over 700 flying hours on my old stick across a bunch of games, so I've got a lot of respect for TM gear, but it was time for an upgrade.
Nice one, thank you for that video, i didn't know this company yet or the concept grip+base :o if i want a Z/Rudder axis does it depend on base or grip? witch other virpils has a rudder axis? got no room for pedals here :( thank you :)
Great coverage of the features and elements. Well done, thank you. I'm on the fence on this one vs the MongooseT50 grip (really want a Constellation grip, but they're out of stock). I guess the thing that might throw me over the edge in favor of the VFX is when you talk about using the Guns toggle to be a mode toggle. Are you sure it can be used that way, that for example putting it to guns would put the other controls on the grip to be separately binding to Mining binds? I'm not sure how that could be, implies that when using it as intended on face value that when setting to Guns that other button's binds react to that Guns move? Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Also, come to think of it, your video didn't really say what that Guns toggle actually does, what those other initials mean above Guns. Assume it sets the primary trigger to different somethings like fire missiles, or what else?
Snake Eater Company
Ahhh didn’t realize the Virgil utilized software... the Warthog HOTAS I’m migrating from was just configured using Star Citizen’s keymapping. The rest of what you’re saying makes sense, though now I’m wondering about how to bind keys in game with a Virpil software in operation.
how do you feel about these claims about the warthog now?
Does the twist function work on the warthog grip?
@@jessecalder That's ok thanks for the info I may buy anyway if Virpil actually sends me a code
Hey I got a question for anybody here. I have a Thrustmaster Cougar. Its the HOTAS I will die with because it's just so unique. Anyone else barely has one. The throttle is just beautiful (Although not having as much button multiplicity as other throttles), it's a work of art. My question is, since I'm going to invest in a Virpil stick, and knowing that they are compatible with the Warthog base, will a Virpil controller work with the Cougar base? I hope someone will be able to answer this since, as I said, it's a rarer HOTAS system out there. And what makes me reach out about it is I want to buy and play. If I buy the stick and then need a base, I'm gonna be upset just cus I'll have to wait longer and spend more money. And the reason why this may be an issue and would need to be tested is because the Cougar base works differently than the Warthog. Cougars have to be programmed, that is, the calibration and control settings must be pre-loaded into the base. So, if anyone could shed some light on this.. Might be an interesting topic for this channel as well.
Hey,
Great video. I've been on the fence about upgrading my old CH hotas. I've been using CH since the early 2000s. I've got some questions that I'm hoping ypu can answer.
1. How does this grip compare to CH fighter stick (chfs) in terms of size? I have medium to small hands and find the 8 way hat switch on the chfs to be a little bit of a reach. Additionally, the chfs is a little tall for top desk mount. Comparing the two, is there a height difference?
2. I've used CH programming for decades. I love how I can download default keybinds from various sims directly into the programming software. This allows me to modify the keybinds as needed without changing the default, ingame keybinds. Does Virpil offer something similari in their programming software?
3. Can you do a tutorial/ review on Virpil programming?
Subscribed and thanks,
Heinz
I'm looking forward to the programming tutorial. Every high end hotas uses dome type of scripting. IMHO, the scripting is more important than ever. I remember the old days of trying to script in Foxy for some of the thrustmaster products....painful. CH made programming easy and their hotas was the best in their day. Hell, all my CH stuff still works like a champ. If CH upgraded their stuff to modern specs I'd buy it.
Fyi, I pulled the trigger on the warbird base with the vfx grip primarily based on your review, as well as some others. Hopefully it will be here in a month or so.
Keep up the good work.
HB
Thanks for the reply.
Hey, I finally got my VFX grip & warbird base. I'm excited about trying this thing out. I realized that I probably need to get some mounts because the stick is so much higher than CH products when setting on my desktop.
Before I go much further, I was wondering if there was a site that provided shared profiles? e.g. IL2- Battle of Bodenplatte. I'm so used to CH programming that I'm rather intimidated by Virpil's software after watching some videos.
Honestly, I've been trying to get the latest Virpil throttle, but that's been a nightmare. As soon as the throttle is available I add it to my cart and then a big pause..."out of stock". Grrr! Any suggestions would be appreciated.
HB
Lovely feature, but I dislike the low top. I like big-headed bad boys. This is a replica, so ofc it's good, but it can still be made bulkier and I hope vkb does just that!
Not really. The real f14 stick is just like this. What you're asking for is a replica stick that isn't a replica. Its like saying nice tomcat but I like planes with crossbars on the tail fins. They should add that then I'd like it more.
@@outonroad not really what? I said it's a replica so "ofc it's good", but expressed personal dislike for the flat head. More importantly, for the absolute size, are you 100% sure the original tomcat column isn't all around bulkier? When I say make it bulkier I don't mean VKB should change the original looks, but that the original one might be more fatty and less toyish.
The base unit and stick ends up with the grip sitting too far above the desktop. Joysticks back in the day were never this tall; but never this good :) Superb vid -camera work etc
what would you use the thumb wheel for on f14
DLC & maneuver flaps.
Will you do a review on the vkb version of this stick when it comes out?
@@jessecalder thank you so much!
The weapons selector is quite stiff to move from off to guns. That´s the truth.
They don't have a left version unfortunatly.
Too expensive for such a quality.
For what they charge for their stick and after using their cm throttleI dont think I could ever bring myself to get one. Especially when coming from the all metal warthog. Just feels like a toy in comparison.
Snake Eater Company yea don’t get me wrong I’m not bashing virpil. I think their gear is great. I just prefer the feel of solid metal as opposed to plastic. But I went with the T50CM gimbal for my extensions. T50CM throttle and 1 small mount and it was 800 and some change. After their shipping. But I had previously bought a warthog set from eBay for 250. So I used the stick. And still have the throttle hooked up for extra controls I’ve never used their sticks so I can’t say anything bad or good about them. But going from all metal to abs plastic I think is a deal breaker for me. But if I find myself to be in a position where I have money to burn. I’d get a stick for each aircraft I fly in DCS.
can this be used with a warthog base
It can but you will not get functionality out of it that the original warthog grip didn't have. In other words things like the selector switch, thumbwheel, etc are not present on the warthog grip so the TM software will not have a way to implement them. other buttons and of course the axis will work however.
That's a bait grip. You buy it because it's cheap, so they make it cheap, so you, at some point in the near future, upgrade it.
It is getting so expensive that in order to afford these high end stick and throttles you need a bank lone good luck on getting one when you tell them what it is for. I guess that is what maxing out your credit card is for.
Looks like good stuff but man the game you have to play just to get one - I find it pathetic some of the forum posts over there about feeling "privileged" to own one - wtf? you bought a product and jumped through hoops to do so, some kind of Stockholm syndrome going on there - people staying up all hours of the night to hit refresh on "restock day" and paying hundreds of dollars for the run around, one post says "it's good as it slows down life" - seems more like a black friday door opening to me with people running over one another... over a gaming hotas, really? The company should simply post we will be ordering and mfg'ing x for x date, payment must be in by x day and shipments will happen on day x instead of this game, I really hope Logitech and Thrustmaster are paying attention because there is a market for more than the Wathog out there, particularly for grips with twist and they come up with a middle ground alternative between the TFlight and the Virpils, the X52 is older and prone to issue's, the X56 is ergonomically challenged and the Warthog no twist, the T16000M is ok for the price but there is little between that and the Virpil... there is a market for the $500ish hotas the Warthog is not meeting...
Sad no force feedback
This grip is dead to me. I am one of the unfortunate 10% of the population. Yup, I'm a lefty. So sticking with my trusty Delta.
