The deck construction is what kept the original game from really being played. I don't want to play it competitively, I just want to have a fun skirmish game where my opponent can just pick a faction and the deck's built. It's good to see that they've changed.
This set looks fun though. It's also nice to see a set without a bunch of human knights in gold and blue armor. Give me some more lizardmen. Also, I have no idea if they're canon anymore, but a Chaos Dwarves warband would be amazing.

Chaos Dwarves haven't been seen for a long, long time. But you never know, we thought Space Dwarves would never come back, and they did!

I find Underworlds to provide a deep and compelling game play experience even without the deck building. I highly recommend it, as it is my favorite of GW's games.
Further, the currently preferred (by GW and much of the community) deck building format is not overly burdensome. It is called Nemesis. It involves taking one's chosen faction's 32-card deck and one other universal Rivals 32-card deck, and from this 64 card pool creating a 32-card deck to play with. The deck building burden is minimal (compared to past formats when 1000 cards were available to choose from) and provides the option to hone one's faction's deck, or to change strategy and follow the plan built into the universal Rival deck.

It's like they said 'let's make a deck-building game!' and then discovered deck-building wasn't very popular among minis gamers. While I also definitely prefer the pick up and play option, it's nice to have that extra deck to fine tune things if you want to. It's a great system and the best of both worlds! (And you can still always go full deck-builder too if you want to)

@@EsotericOrderGamers But that was GW's greatest miscalculation with this game... Instead of marketing this to boardgamers, it tried to push it on its own miniature gamers (who, in addition to not generally being interested in deck-building or boardgames, are unaccustomed to deep, nuanced gameplay I'd posit). The product line survived because of the amazing sculpts that GW/AOS/Warcry players wanted for other uses. Yet, the game nearly died here in the U.S.
It is such a pity too, because there has been a resurgence of tactical arena boardgames like Underworlds in the last 5 years. Many have made a splash (Wildlands, Aresteia, Star Trek Away Missions, etc...). But none surpass Underworlds in my mind.
