Metroid Dread would make a great Wha Happun entry. That game's got quite the history.
Unfortunately it’s a history we currently don’t know that much about. Despite being planned 15 years ago, we only found out it 100% existed a few hours ago.
(Yes, there was a tease in Prime 3, but you still could’ve argued that was a prank before today.)
@@DylanDude That's true. I think we might hear more about it, though. Sakamoto talked about its history a bit during Treehouse, which basically confirmed everything that we had heard about it before.

@@GoatToHeal Basically what Sakamoto said during the development history video. TLDR: the DS didn't have the power to handle the game they wanted to make, so they cancelled it. They apparently tried again later down the line to no avail as well. After MercurySteam did Samus Returns, Sakamoto decided to have them helm Metroid: Dread.

Interestingly enough, I straight up don't like fighting games, I've never even played tekken before, and yet I knew INSTANTLY that this guy is from tekken.

Great way to put it. A lot of people bitching about the lack of "big" titles like more Pokemon or whatever while a lot of us are over here at a smorgasbord with Metroid, Warioware, Advance Wars, Fatal Frame, a Mario Party collection that actually looks GOOD for once, another dope Game & Watch collectible, Smash DLC...I know it didn't have EVERYTHING, but man I definitely left very satisfied.
I don't understand why people are complaining about nothing big, we literally got decent Botw 2 news, plus all the other stuff in this direct.
Those are all big titles for me
It's like it's some of those peoples' first E3. Pokémon is almost always presented in a separate direct nowadays. People will tune into that regardless, so it's smart using the E3 direct on a lot of smaller franchises.
@@MagicBavarian it's actually the first E3 direct since 2015 without anything Pokemon releated. Yes, they have their own directs. But they still had an E3 presence.

A metroid announcement was one thing , but it being Metroid Dread was the last thing anyone ever expected.
@a HERO that doesn’t know what protect means This. I was to the point my only hope for 2d was just for remakes or MAYBE Metroid 5 in some form or fashion but even then it was unlikely. Dread was so out of left field because of how much it was confirmed and denied over the years. It was Meme status before this happened.

@@Grunkle2210 there's a regular computer that stays in a way you can see Naomi's face in newer screens, and that cabinet obscures it. So that likely is old version of the game.

Yep! As far as deaths in the actual CGI trailer go, Kazuya is at 5, which is currently at the top. Sephiroth is second at 3 (two villains at the top, unsurprising) and then a bunch of characters are at 2.

Thank you for being one of the few people I've seen actually recognize the Metroid Dread name. I get not everyone would remember a rumor from 15 years ago, so that's what make it more remarkable.
And as for the no new hardware reveal, the twitter announcement for this direct literally said it was only about Switch software.

@@music79075 Back in 2002 Metroid Fusion (Metroid 4) came out alongside Metroid Prime (which kicked off its side series), and people finished those and wondered whats next? In ~2004-2006 there were rumors (and minor leaks) of plans for a sequel to Fusion named "Metroid Dread" which eventually fell on the backburner. I read somewhere that in ~2010 someone mentioned that there WAS a demo of Dread on the DS and it honestly just looked like fusion and zero mission, and it failed to live up to what they wanted it to be. Now here we are 19 years since the last non-remake of a game in the mainline 2D style(and 2.5 as of the Metroid 2 Remake) and they drop not only Metroid 5, but its ACTUALLY METROID DREAD. Its been ~16 years since its name first circulated and they actually did it. They resurrected a game that has been in development hell longer than any other game i've known that wasn't just straight up a cancelled project.
@@jusquanorthwind1016 all of this plus in Prime 3 (iirc, there's a screen shot floating around) there was a Scan Entry of the Space Pirate's files that made a reference to a "Metroid project Dread" that was foreshadowing/easter egg.

I’ve followed these games for years, I’m more into the 2d style but I’ve loved every thing about the series. I’ve been glad for the prime series getting its continuation but Dread in whatever form it came in was what I was hoping for! Can’t wait until it and then Prime 4 drop!

In all honesty, what a good direct. E3 has been kind of mediocre, but I think Nintendo saved it, I liked a lot of their lineups.
Only problem now is do I hold out on buying Switch or not, because they didn't announce a new Switch here, but who knows 1-2 months from now?

I love the switch and it's my favorite console. But honestly at this poiny I say u might as well hold out a little longer and wait until Metroid dread at least. Just to see if they are looking to release a switch pro within the fiscal year
@@loko7496 its mainly because I was holding out for a new Switch version being announced at E3. But now idk if they have plans to do so within the next few months or whatnot.

There were leaks back in 2004 about a sequel to Fusion called "Metroid: Dread" and it was at one point going to be on the DS but the tech didn't step up to where they wanted it (the most likely thing i've seen is the AI tech needed for the E.M.M.I. to hunt and stalk like they have been designed to in the current version wasn't invented way back then). I read somewhere it even had a demo version they were still testing with but it wasn't working due to the above problem with the tech of the time. so it fell through. The team that did the samus returns remake plus the current tech sparked this new version, and it finally reached the point that was envisioned all those years ago. 16 YEARS since the name first spread around. 19 YEARS since Fusion released. Its nice to get a mainline game that isn't a remake.
Fitting for a person who does video game post-mortem content to call out a dead title. :D

Out of everything shown, I look most forward to SMTV. But this was great all around, with Metroid Dread having my attention and having an actual chance now getting to play Fatal Frame U on Switch being foreseeable.

@@pats3212 Its the end of the Arc between her and the Metroids. which is awkward because they're the name of the series, so either the story continues without them under a new name, or the series is over after this and the prime series finishes...

@@cubit9345 I’ve also remembered something since I commented, that for any further games, samus, being that her dna is part Metroid, is now the last Metroid. The series title is now talking just about her.

In the Tony Hawk 1 + 2 Demo for Xbox and PlayStation there were controls for a switch version which had people thinking it was coming at some point or in development.

Matt had to be the only one ive seen that recognized Kazuya immediately in the trailer upon frame queued with the Tekken 2 - devil kazuya theme. Amazing.
Metroid Dread was the primo new game chill I got from their Direct. But for a remaster/re-release... I don't want to slight lovers of the "Fire Emblem" series, but I cannot count how many times I've wished that "Advance Wars" got SOME kind of re-issuing! That was my absolute GBA strategy RPG fix! And now it carries over to the Switch! Hope it performs well enough to get a remastering of "Days of Ruin", which was a DS hidden gem!

I never noticed that Kazuya’s victims were an unintentional tease for what was to come. He literally threw away any chance of a new F-Zero, Kid Icarus, ARMS, Fire Emblem, or Kirby title being announced in this direct.
Also, I loved how we opened the direct with Ganondorf being thrown into a pit and ended with Zelda going with him.
Of all the reaction videos I've seen so far, this has been the most proper reaction to Kazuya's hypest reveal in Smash.
The main thing I learned today is that nobody knows how to correctly pronounce Kazuya

So there used to be this pixel rpg type punch kick blast fighter for the GBA, I remember hating it as a young kid but loved it as I revisited it years later as a teen. I forget the name of it but it was so fun.
We got two Namco fighters now, I wonder if we'll get a Bandai one.
