Lovely man. Had that touch of class that Englishmen of that era seemed to exude. Very self deprecating, but what a marvelous contribution to The Fab Four's music he made. R.I.P Sir George.
People do not know that George Martin served as a an aerial gunner and radioman in the British navy during WWII. His exposure to electronics in the war combined with his earlier musical knowledge led him into the area of becoming a record producer. In this clip, you can see George excited and singing along with these songs ,which were among the Beatles most radical. It should be noted how unusual it was for a WWII combat vet to be able to facilitate with sound equipment and orchestration the avant garde ideas of John Lennon and the Beatles. There is NO question that there would have been NO Beatles without the presence of the great George Martin to produce their new and unique sound, and to turn their basic ideas into refined marvels of excellence !! The Beatles WERE the best in their day....they WERE "Rock and Roll". As an incredible team, The Beatles and George Martin created music that will live forever. These were little boys and a combat airman who survived a brutal attack on their nation by a conqueror whose " Reich" was supposed to last a thousand years. How ironic, it was THEIR music that may live for a thousand years INSTEAD !!!
I just love the way he carries himself. What a great man, what a great musician and a genius producer. When he passed away, my first thought was, what a great loss.
I usually cringe when talk show hosts talk to people who I really revere like George Martin, but Roseanne had a great sense of joy and taste in her approach. I think this was very well done.
George Martin is the epitome of class, humility and humbleness. His bedside manner brought the very best out of the Beatles and in my opinion helped them reach the near superhuman levels they achieved
Being a musician, engineer and producer I have great admiration for George Martin. Even though the Beatles were a few generations before mine, I own every album and love their work. Rubber soul and Revolver are my favorites and Abby Road also holds a special place as one of the greatest Swan song (Last albums) by any band. Sir Georges use of 2 tracks and 4 tracks was amazing.
George Martin was a classically trained musician. His ground-breaking work with the Beatles put his name on the map. Without his string arrangements on "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yesterday," to his Bach-like horn arrangement on "Penny Lane," the Beatles could not have done it without his expertise.
And on top of this, I don't think too many people realize that Paul McCartney continued to go back to him time and time again throughout his post Beatles career for arrangements, consultation, production, Paul never forgot what this man meant to The Beatles
WELL--I don't think -the Beatles career would have extended so far as it did, without George Martins guidance. john in particular, complained that by spending more time in the studio, instead of performing live, amouted to ''selling out''.It was Paul who embraced change, and a extended career ensued.
What a great interview. He's so charming and I like her questions. She asks what you want to know and really listens (instead of working through a predetermined set of question cards). So much mutual respect there.
Thank you Roseanne for this great interview. The best one with George Martin I've seen. Great man. RIP George Martin...The only person who deserves the title...The 5th Beatle.
I love hearing the Beatles wanted to do The abbey Road album and not end their association with bitter feelings like the last album LET IT BE. George was touched and all the group pulled together. That is wonderful! John and George are gone and George Martin is too! But this talk with George really made me feel good. It has been great to have taken this ride with the Beatles New generations will take the ride next!!
I agree. I had never seen this or even remember that she had a show. But she does a really good job interviewing George Martin. Asking some great questions in a laid back style without sounding flippant. Most of all letting him answer questions without constant interruptions as many interviewers tend to do.
Without any doubt, Sir George Martin was the 5th Beatle. I love his voice. What a gentleman! He was the man that put John's, Paul's and George's ideas to tape. Not easy to do.
This guy was the glue that kept the music together. It did not take me long to realize how important He was for 'The Beatles'. He was the catalyst that solidified each song. Without him, 'The Beatles' were good like the 'Let it Be' album. Abbey Road and Sargent Peppers had his touch and what a difference they it made. 'The Beatles'=John, Paul, George, Ringo and Martin. Never forget 'Martin', credit where credit is due.
Yes. Not only that but he was much too modest. Take Eleanor Rigby for instance. Only Beatle on that is Paul....all the rest is pure George Martin, writing, arranging, conducting and producing......and not a penny in royalties.
Despite being a (obviously) intelligent man, with great skills and knowledge of electronics and Studio experience, he had a grounded experience with some of Britains great comics, and I bought a few of their records in the pre Beatle era.
Sir. George Martin was the genius behind the Beatles. Without him there would be no Beatles...all of them played their part of course but it was him that translated their genius into actual music.
that was the best interview I've seen with George Martin. Roseane did very well

What a great, great interview by Roseanne. You can tell that they both really enjoyed each other's company. And when the principal subject matter is the Beatles...
George's description is right on. When the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, it was an instant feeling of the 'charisma' George mentioned. After all, it was somewhat impossible to really hear them over the screaming, yet I was somehow hypnotized by them. There was always something very pleasing about seeing them together, a weird gladness when John and Paul were together goofing around or singing their effortless harmonies.
Watching this on Nov. 5th 2022 after just unwrapping and listening to the Giles Martin re-mix special edition of the Revolver album. He said he acted as his Dad’s ears later in his career as George was losing his hearing. Today he is the keeper of those precious original master tapes of the holy grail of music, and the Beatle family and business empire has given him their blessing and full access and permission to carry on in his dad’s footsteps. Well, at 7:21 we see Giles to the left of George with Paul in the studio control room. Giles is 53 now so in 1998 he’d have been 29 there, learning how to produce and mix a record.
For me.. This guy right here is the guy who deserves the title Fifth Beatle. He was part of their music. He's the producer. He has the ear. And he was the one who knew the potential of the lads when other labels reject the lads.
I was a fan of Flanders and Swann and Peter Sellers and the Goon Show. I learned later that Martin had produced those albums before his involvement with the Beatles. A charming, genteel man whose direction and musicality influenced the group for seven years.
IN tune with that era, many bought the records (I did) and obviously knew the artists BUT NOBODY, knew of the studio talent behind it. THats another example of Beatle influence, because after their explosion on the public , All Hit record producer's became household names as much as the stars.
Wow, what a wonderful little gemstone. Didn't know the CD even existed. Other than Celine Dion's overkil/bombast I'll bet it's a pretty good compilation. George Martin, RIP.
After seeing this from G Martin, it comfirms my view that Abbey Road is their best album over Sgt Pepper, considering what the four individual members had gone thru in their private lives. Things could never be the same again but they still could come back to make one more.

I plum forgot she had a talk show. I confess I was waiting for a awkward moment that never came. She let him do most of the talking and she basically asked the questions I would say the average Beatle fan has always wondered about and got a definitive answer from the guy who was witness to it all.
The one thing amazing happened to the four boys from the not so heard district of Liverpool, and another man from a London recording studio was their being accorded a official title of Sirs. Ain't it marvelous?
I wish they had time to talk about Sir George's post-Beatle work with acts like America and the Police, but then again, he was promoting a CD of Beatle covers, so I guess it makes sense they would focus on his work with the Beatles. George Harrison did a lot of post-Beatle production work for other acts like Badfinger, and for Ringo's solo career. Wanna guess who was George Harrison's Jedi Master in that regard?
It's a misnomer that John and Paul wrote everything together. They both wrote lyrics and music, and mostly sang their own songs. They wrote some songs together, or contributed sections. There was plenty of interplay in the studio, however, and all four (+1) contributed.
