    BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

    SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

    I love to multiply, so I did the last one like this: (75-50-4)*(25+6) = 21*31 = 651

For 609, you could also add together the 8, 3 and 1 to make 12.

    For 609:
    50 + 8 + 3 = 61
    61 × 10 = 610
    610 - 1 = *_609_*
    For 284:
    50 - 3 = 47
    47 × 6 = 282
    282 + 2 = *_284_*
    For 166:
    Same method as Ethan's.

    609:
    9 + 3 = 12
    50 * 12 = 600
    600 + 10 - 1 = 609
    9 + 8 = 17
    10 - 1 = 9
    17 * 9 = 153
    153 + 50 = 203
    203 * 3 = 609
    50 + 8 + 3 = 61
    61 * 10 = 610
    610 - 1 = 609

Is it just me, but did our Colin just make a comment about the "Not written down" tactic? I know I'm a pedantic old git (many years of intense practise) but it really annoys me when they do that. They gain extra seconds.
It's like the ones on "Mastermind" who give gibberish answers to avoid saying "pass".

    My way-too-complex way for 651:
    (75-4) * 9 = 639
    (50/25) * 6 = 12
    639 + 12 = 651

I went a slightly longer way on 166:
    50 + 2 = 52
    52 × 3 = 156
    6 ÷ 6 = 1
    1 + 9 + 156 = 166

    50 × (10 + 3 - 1) + 9 = 0 (nice and neat)
    50 × 6 - (9 + 9 - 2) = 0 (lovely so far)
    50 × 3 + 6 + 9 = -1 (couldn't quite find the missing one in time)
    75 × 9 - 25 = -1 (and again with this one off)

@@ZaidMalek-z1s That's all fine but on mobile it will show the comments even before you start the video and then people will already see the solution.
So it's best to add more lines before writing the word and it won't show up.

    50 - 3 = 47
