Land Rover Defender 2020 Rear Light Removal / Upgrade to Model X Smoked Lamps

- In this video we look at how to remove the rear lights on our Land Rover Defender 2020. We change the rear lights from the standard red type to the top of the range Model X smoked rear lights.
The new defender is growing on me simon, when I watch your videos it makes me appreciate how much engineering goes into the manufacturing of a new car and all the supplying and testing of every single piece right down to the smallest trim clip
I'm quite shocked how much plastic is used, it all looks a bit flimsy and easy to break and expensive to replace, great videos as always love the defender
Been waiting for this video, the smoked lights look so much better. Can’t wait to fit mine in 15years when I can afford one hehe.
Thanks for the video man, just got one of these in our body shop today for some damage repair on the rear quarter fender and I was lost on how to take that rear light out
Yep tape and super glue are extensively used in the factory to make it past the checks on the customer acceptance line, they don’t care about what happens to the car after it leaves the factory
Thank you for this video it was very informative and helpful
Glad it was helpful!
More bravery again Simon! All those trim fixings seem a bit worrying and those rear light units ought to be supplied with a bag of the ones likely to die being pulled apart. I also wondered how much those X light units costs...quite a lot I would think...£200+ each maybe???😨😨. Good work again! Richard😀😀😀😀
Hi Richard the lights are not cheap... retail is over £300 each + VAT. If we sell them they will indeed come with some white clips !
powerfulukltd Gosh..so not far off £800 a set!!! I do hope you sell some though...and well done for those clips..why don’t JLR include them???....probably to make you take the lights back to the dealer to put the lights on for you. My local dealer does not seem to be selling many...plenty of Evoques and some D/Sports but only two Defenders for 70 plates...a white one much like yours and a totally black one with black wheels..it looked horrible but no doubt will be parked outside a nightclub next week...never going near a farm in its life! Have a good weekend! Richard 😀😀😀😀
powerfulukltd IF? Don’t tease us.
@@HQBProductions thats expensive to replace even if you just break 1 light it requires a whole unit mad tbh
Sell these ASAP! Thank you for the videos.😃👍🏻
Do you think the UK spec lights can be installed into a US model? You mention at the outset that the US market has a different configuration so wasn't sure what you thought. Or maybe there is a way to test them by plugging them in prior to swapping. The reason I'm interested in the UK configuration is because the turn signals are amber flashes in the two small lights, whereas in the US it is all red and everything flashes red on a turn signal (or when the hazards are lit).
That is a good question... I am not sure if the lights are different or if the car just flashes the tail / brake lights on the US version. OK so while writing this i just looked up the part numbers... in the old days the part list would show NAS Spec so we knew that was North Americal Spec (NAS) but now i see that the list has part numbers for the US with these smoked lights.
Now they seem to call the US lights " FM VSS 108 pattern " which seem to relate to this.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Motor_Vehicle_Safety_Standard_108
So good news... there are these lights available for US cars !
@@L663 Do you think I can unplug the connector from the unit that came installed on my US car, and plug in the smoked UK spec I order from you, without having to completely uninstall the lights? This way I can just test it to see if the UK spec generates the amber signals from the US software, or if not, then it's definitely also a software set up. I saw the blue wiring sort of showing at the bottom before you guys took off the light so I was curious if I could poke the connectors out of that hole and just to a quick test. Curious your expert thoughts and thanks!
@@johnfagan9441 Hi John.... for you... and because we are nice guys here... I ordered the US spec lights and will plug them into my car and see what they do !
@@L663 very... very cool! I would say you guys are very nice guys. looking forward to learning how it goes of course :)
Excellent as always, good to see the Defender can be easily upgraded, is there going to be a video on the extra reversing light you’ve fitted ?
Yes I will get onto that next week !
Do you have video about how to replace the front fog light?
I have just done this video for you today - its possible without removing the front bumper
Hi - i have done the video and its published now

Unbelievable beautiful advice 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Glad you think so!
Good job well done tyler
Tyler did not help with this one... and he still gets praise... this was George ( my son ) on the camera this time !
Very interesting great video , interesting re that little tape in the hole though. Regards mark
Yes it was the same on the other side.... mystery !
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned before, how much are those small white clips?
£1 each
powerfulukltd thanks for your reply. By the way I enjoy your videos alot, keep up the good work.
thanks for this video!! Super helpful. Did you guys ever try painting the plastic light covers?
Hi - yes we did try painting the chequer plate effect covers but it was not a good result - they are made from PU - Polyurethane and they are not easy to paint. Most plastic that is painted is ABS plastic.
Watching that made me really worried. So many little penetrations of the bodyshell depending on foam washers for waterproofing. How many of these things will be back at the dealerships with water ingress in the first year of ownership 😬
Its a good point you raise - it may have been better to have studs protruding from the bodyshell that the part "docked" onto.
@@L663 It's weird. Watching you guys change those lamp units reminded me of an old Peugeot 306 my son once had, it constantly leaked around one tail lamp, those fittings on the defender were much the same, just a load more of them. Very practical video though (as always).
Great video as always. Can’t wait for mine to arrive in April 2021. I desperately want the X lights but dealers in Aus are not sure they can help. Did you source these from the dealer? And are they expensive?
Discovery 3/4 tail lamp removal takes one minute. There is a difference?
You make a very good point...these are perhaps more complex than needed.... we may see this more as there is no need to change bulbs on these LED type lights... sealed for life... so they can be designed in more.
Maybe they are addressing the light theft problem
@@dantheman7370 You have a valid point ... you cannot steel these lights without opening the rear door !
Good jop , and do you have a navigation map for range rover sport 2016 arabian gulf region and also the radio system for the same region :) thanks
Isnt that a soft close door my man? Glad the light doesn’t need the interior taken apart….
Yes i have soft close rear door on my base model "S"
Thanks for the lights!
You are welcome !
Hi dear can you give me some information about rear lights
Some models rear lights have 4 wires and some 5 wires for rear side indicators. can we adjust 4 wires in to 5 wires system for yellow indicator
This video may help

Just fitted to 90 Hardtop, had to remove my overpriced plumb storage compartments, anybody bought these? What do you keep in them? I got a first aid kit in one side and towing shackles in other. Lights easy to fit, but I broke the clips on the pretend chequer plate trims, in fact I broke clips on everything I took off.. 2-part glued everything on assembly. Lights look cool, only about 1 hours work… next job are the extra indicators and am guessing I have to take all the same trims off! Probably buy some new replacements ready before tackling the job!
Good night I'm trying to buy a piece that I saw in your land to steal but AQ in Brazil I don't think ... could you help me by giving a website or even msm if you sell? And the led you put in the rearview mirror, how do I make my friend? Evoque
Hi Willans... You can see our website @ www.PowerfulUK.com
Obrigado meu amigo 👍🏼👍🏼
@@willianstitan8805 de nada 👍🏼👍🏼
How much did the lights cost? Did I miss it in the Video.
They are around £300 each + vat EACH !
Eight years after buying my 110 Defender puma 2.2 by gear stick knob has disintegrated into bits and the whole stick needs to be replace for around $300AUD. It should have lasted longer and is another common failure. I don’t want to think how the plastic on the new Defender will age. Clips in particular are going to be a problem! And the CEO of land rover wants to be more environmentally sustainable?
Hi 👋 very nice 👍 looks like a black edition model. Great 👍
Thanks 🙏
How to reset the faults
Hi when we fitted the correct light ( UK spec ) the lights worked correctly.
Nice!
Look better even if they are technically illegal (no red reflection on them)
Thats a good point BUT the reflectors are in the bumper under the lights !
Great video but way too much plastic, plastic clips etc . How sturdy are they? No thanks I’ll stick with my 2008 RR.
There is a lot of plastic... where the clips are a separate item its not a problem as they can be replaced ... what worries me more is where the clips are part of the actual panel like the front grille etc.
How about pull them out and leave a hole will look better!
Hardly seems worth the trouble. The difference is minimal.
Yes for the money and hassle i would agree that for some people its not going to be on their priority list..
It's like a massive plastic toy.
Yes - It's just a 60K airfix kit.
@@christopherwright815 Be interesting to see one when a Bull has had a Rub round one
Yes, I bet when this model gets to be 6 or 7 years old, it will be hard to spot one without one of more bits of trim held on with tape 😉
@@christopherwright815 will be missing bits of trim. Plastic checker plate too haha
Well if you need any replacement parts just walk up to any Defender and help yourself - make sure no one's looking though!
