It should probably be explained that this rocket launch was scheduled for shortly after sunset, as you can see about the 0:48 mark. This means that the sky appears dark, but the exhaust and gasses are still illuminated by the sun, because of their high altitude, creating a stark contrast and allowing you to see detail that would otherwise be too bright to see against the blue sky of the day.
Those trippy, concentric blue rings you see being produced starting at about 2:32, is the Falcon 9's separated rocket boosters' nitrogen cold gas thrusters, which are mounted in the nose, and they are firing to orient the booster (pretty sure you're only seeing one here) for reentry (although I don't think they intended to recover them for this particular launch, they still went through the motions anyway, for data and testing purposes).
As you probably have seen before, these types of thrusters often fire in a series of rapid short bursts. The low pressure of the thermosphere, which is where they are when they detach (about 100km up), is what makes the gas expand so much, so rapidly and nearly circular. Very cool to behold.

If this was the 10/7/2018 launch, they certainly did recover the first stage. We watched it do the burn, then land behind the mountain. We watched from Pismo Beach 35 miles North. The first stage sonic boom hit us maybe 2-3 minutes after it landed. It looked like a ball of orange light falling quickly, then slowing down for landing. It was an awesome experience.

1:43 Boostback burn of the first stage
From this point onwards, the second stage is the glowing object on the left, while the returning first stage is the one on the right
2:22 You can briefly see a tiny white dot near the second stage, which might be one of the fairing covers (deployed around ~1:52).

This video didn't capture the last burn called a retro-burn just before landing back at VAFB. I photographed it from start to finish looking from Santa Maria, CA due south towards the base with only the foothills blocking the actual lift-off and 1st stage landing, if made, 35 minutes away. My view was looking right up the tail pipe you might say and watched the gases spewing out very fast in sort of concentric-like circles. I took video and stills. I knew two things about this launch before-hand: 1. The time ,7:22pm, Oct 7, 2018 meant a 'twilight effect' launch, everything lit by the sun after our sunset. 2nd. SpaceX was returning the booster to land back at VAFB less than a quarter mile from the launch pad. Because of various burns and shut-offs, the 1st stage blacked-out briefly a few times. I knew to follow the dark path by counting and watching the thrusters adjust the 1st stage for a re-entry landing. Some of my photos were blurry because for my slow shutter speed and forgetting my 'tripod' Dumb me! HOWEVER, in one shot (I didn't use my 70-300mm Canon for any close-ups. I used my 17-85mm. I have seen plenty of rocket launch, but not too many at 'twilight effect' time. I planned for the gas vapors expanding. At several seconds past 1st and 2nd stage separation, I took a shot. Gas vapors just emerging. What I saw amazed me. I zoomed in on my screen, just to see it closer. I saw a black, partial ring of the 1st stage. I never expected to see that! The exhaust was turned to the left because the 1st stage was going backwards and down. For me that was my best shot of the night. Next time, I WILL have my camera on a tripod and a good video camera attached, as one.

The two points of light are the first stage (right point of light) and the second stage (the left point of light). The colored effect is actually occurring after a critical point in ascent; the term is Max Q. Maximum Dynamic Pressure is like a giant hug on the rocket. The rp rocket fuel burns out different colors at different air densities. The higher up the rp lox is burning, the colorful cloud aka jellyfish can be viewed. Saturday, a drone ship that catches the falcon 9 rockets, caught an amazing view of a similar plume as the second stage was visible also.

"Exhaust from the rocket undulated through the atmosphere like ripples across a pond. "
No, they didn't. It's not the atmosphere, it is space, that is WHY the cold gas jets expand outward for many miles like they do, and why the exhaust of the second stage is shaped somewhat like a boat wake. In the atmosphere all you get is a 'smoke column', because the gasses cannot expand as they are doing here.

I've seen a video of a flat earther explaining that I find that hard to believe but there can be water vapor in the atmosphere but a straight wall of water doubtful also thanks to the magnetic field and atmosphere the radiation that would pelt the earth is minimal and there is alot if you go to mars expect to deal with alot of radiation as the atmosphere and magnetic field are weak they speculate that Mars was an ice planet makes sense as the sun expands as it gets older and older well til it reaches critical mass and runs out of fuel to sustain itself we got a very long ways to go for that one the earth would be swallowed before it went supernova however or so the theory goes interesting stuff at least I find it fascinating

The best part is that the sun was just going down, so the smoke was high enough to be illuminated by it. Really cool. Of course, there's going to be a herd of kooks who think it's water, and that this is somehow proof of some conspiracy. For the rest of us, it's just really beautiful!

      @@casualbird7671 Yo it's alright, I know it's confusing..
I'll tell you. But Most will hate to hear this because many of them had been brainwashed ever since they were little kids.. n it's not safe to bring up this info here, it looks risky since people always yell when bring up this topic..but I'll tell u anyway.. Actually, there's a thing in the sky the governments are hiding from us, but lemme tell u, that thing, it's called the Firmament. It's a water that is above the sky.. I know it sounds crazy, but please don't yell at us okay, even if u don't want to believe, you got your right not to believe, but One day you will know it. We'll just remain quite about this matter untill one day it'll not be a secret anymore. According to those who believe in the existence of Creator, believes that in between the sky(our realm) and Heaven(God's realm) there is a firmament, it's an ocean like water that seperates our world and God's realm. And also according to believers, no one has ever been to moon, the things you see of nasas taking pic are all fake, everything you see of space thing are all fake. They're also faking all these Mars visitings and staff cause they don't want us to believe in truth. Some may even think astronauts are inside those rocket, but "no" they are not. And As you can see in this video, when the rocket hits the firmament or water above or whatever, you can see it clearly going through it as if it was diving through the water. The reason behind this belief is that, the Holy book revealed the creation of the sky in the book of Genesis "And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
      Hope this help you understand.
