How do you watch a SPACEX ROCKET LAUNCH at Vandenberg SFB? 🚀

- We camped as close as we could to a SpaceX Starlink rocket launch on the California coast. We want to share all the details on how to see a SpaceX launch in person and where we camped to be close to the launch site.
There are several viewing locations to see a rocket launch from the Vandenberg Space Force Base, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. We share some of these sites and how we chose the site where we saw the rocket launch. Our campsite was 10 miles away from the launch pad and the viewing site we chose was only 3.8 miles away from the launch pad.
We observed the SpaceX rocket launch that occurred on February 25, 2022 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, CA. It was sending 50 new Starlink satellites up into low orbit. Even though we returned our Starlink (see previous video on why), we are still fans of Starlink and hopeful that a model that will suit our needs will be available in the near future.

We live in lom-poke… and we can see these from our upstairs bedroom windows extremely good. They usually shake the windows and sliders, dogs barking….. and then comes the sonic boom for the booster re-entry!!! BOOM!!! Sometimes late, late at night or very early in the morning. Always a pretty cool experience. Glad you all enjoyed the launch.
Wow, that's gotta be something to see our your window! What a wake-up call!
Can’t even describe how helpful this video was. Im planning on going down on the 15th for the next launch and this was just the video I was looking for. Thanks a ton!
You bet 😃 Enjoy the launch 🚀 they're so amazing to watch!
@Craig Garza - did you do it?
So much fun! Great video.
Thanks! It was a really cool experience. There was so much excitement from everyone there.
Thanks so much for this video. My dad’s ashes will be aboard a Falcon 9 flight later this year. Close family members will be able to view from a private viewing area (no idea where yet) but I was searching for locations where friends and extended family could clearly see the launch too and stumbled upon your video….it was perfect. Thanks again
Our condolences to you and your family. We're glad that our video could help.
Awesome video, great content and I enjoy watching your journeys. Keep it up! 👍
Thanks, Maurice! Lots more to come 😃
Wow! Great experience!
It was really cool to hear and feel the sounds waves 😄
We’re going to see our first launch tomorrow 🤞 Thanks for scouting out the viewing locations so we could preview them in advance!
Enjoy the launch! It's really cool!
Great video.
Thanks for the visit!
That was cool! 🚀
If you ever get to see one in person it's quite the experience
The suspense is killing us!!!!! OMG that was so awesome!!!!! We got to see it when we were out camping but the launch would be super cool!!! This was so cool!!!
If you get the chance to see a launch do it! It's so cool to experience in person 😃 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for taking us to your launch viewing!
It was spectacular. Have you ever been to one?
@@HomeARoam Never! I’ve also never really had a bucket list, but I better start one to include a launch! I was surprised that it was so loud from your vantage point.
Thank you so much for this awesome video, I live in Santa Barbara but never get a chance to actually see the launch. Now I finally get a chance to watch the launch on April 15th, and I searched a lot on where the best spot to watch launch is. Your video is so great and clear helping me find the best spot! I’m so excited to see it!
So great to hear! We actually visited Santa Barbara when we were down there and made a video about that too. It was honestly one of our favorite places. Enjoy the launch!
thanks for sharing this video...rare and helpful info in case I need to view one in the future
It's definitely not a common thing to go and see (at least not for us since we don't live there). Some of the folks we met there have seen every single one, though! They just can't get enough.
That was very cool!
We loved the experience. So neat!
Great video! I saw that as well, as I have friends in Lompoc who I speak with every day of the week via Zoom, who run outside & stands on top of their trailer every time there's a launch! Very cool! We communicate via Zoom so it's all good for us to see as well! Wow! Thanks for your show though! Excellent!
Hi Rob! That's so cool that you were watching it live with us 😆 Seeing it in person takes the experience to a whole new level. Hope you get to do that one day, too.
Thanks for the video. I am a big Elon Musk fan like many people so it was cool to see the rocket take off.
Glad you enjoyed it! If you ever get the chance, we highly recommend the experience. I (Jay) am a huge Elon Musk fan too. It's pretty amazing what SpaceX has done for commercial rocket launches in such a short time. As they say, everyone calls you crazy until you succeed. Then you're a genius! :)
Great video, I am going down to Vandenberg with my son and his friends on September 28!
Thanks, enjoy! Hope you get to see a launch. They seem to be happening more and more frequently these days.

Greetings!
Great video, thanks for sharing. This just got added to our RV Cruise tour map. We moved to Florida Jan 1994, an made several trips to the cape to view major launches. After all these years we still drive across the state to see a late morning to early night launch. We have been know to park the RV at Jetty Park Campground 9035 Campground Cir Cape Canaveral, FL 32920.
Awesome, I've been to Cape Canaveral but unfortunately never seen a launch there. Are there some spots where you can get fairly close there too? Like within a few miles? They definitely have a lot more launches on the East coast. It seems like SpaceX might be making that their primary spaceport after their regulatory issues in Texas.
@@HomeARoam Look up this address FL-401, Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
It is at the edge of south end of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station [Red on map] which is where Space X and Blue Origin launch pads are located on. will try to send the map via FB messenger Red = AFS is usually Free viewing & Blue is Jetty Park Campgrounds. I do not know If I can get you guys onto the base, will check next time I go shopping. Let me know if get the map
Definitely jealous! I've seen a few launches in Florida but from the opposite coast, so it's basically just a white streak across the sky.
Yeah we were psyched to be able to get so close!
That is what i want to do, i live 200 miles away from Vandenberg i will drive there and hope they lauch it and not delay it
It's a really cool experience. Safe travels!
@@HomeARoam thank you 😊
We are currently in Florida, 250km away from Cape Canaveral and we've seen a few space x rockets going up, even from this far away.
That's awesome! Are you able to hear it from that distance too?
@@HomeARoam no, we can't hear it and you only see it for about 15 seconds, but still so cool. We will be near Cape Canaveral in a few weeks and hope to get an experience more like yours at that time.
Hey, Thanks for sharing this video. How early before the launch would you recommend getting there to get parked etc?
You're welcome! I think we arrived about an hour before. There were already a decent number of people there, but we still got a good spot.
If anybody’s wondering what the payload is it’s star link group 4-11
Thanks for sharing 😃
“lom-poke” I says!
yup, it's definitely "lom-poke". We got it completely wrong
@@HomeARoam Lol! I’m from Ojai, just South of Santa Barbara, and many here still say “Lom-pock”. It’s a never ending argument. Regardless, great video. I’m going to Lompoc today to watch a launch. Your video was a godsend! Thank you folks so much!
I live here in Lompoc, it just sucks when they launch it at night or early morning and you forget 😂
😅 oh no! Especially if you live really close to the launch site.
It’s pronounced lom-poke
Excited for tomorrow’s launch 👐
Thanks for the pronunciation correction. 🙂
@@HomeARoam we had a great view in Santa Maria
Saw the separation, heard the sonic boom
I’m happy
Thank you for this video. I'm going to see the launch on 12-15 @ 3:46am. This one has a return to launch site landing. Do you know which viewing site would be best for that?
Oh wow, that would be so cool when it's still dark out! The only site we visited where we could see the actual launch pad was pretty far away on the hill. Not sure if there are other options or not. Have fun watching the launch!
@@HomeARoam Thanks for the reply. It would be awesome to see the landing but I don't want to be that far. I really want the sound and feel of the launch.
Best vid!! Thanks and I'm going to see the SWOT launch on Wednesday (Thurs am) too. Mike, look for my RV with LED lights where HomeARoam parked and stop by for a drink :)
Great video guys. I definitely would love to experience that some day.
I’m not sure if this is what you meant by big white building but I found this explanation on Quora.
The 4 towers around the launching pad are the "lightning suppression system."
They are used to redirect lightning in the immediate area. This essentially creates a Faraday cage, shielding the rocket from being fried by lightning. Each tower is very tall, higher than the rocket & utility tower, and are more likely to be hit by lightning should it occur. The tube at the top of each tower is called the 'Candlestick,' and is insulated outside with stainless steel wiring run down through the inside, where it directs electricity from a lightning strike to the ground, sparing the rocket at the center of the launch pad. Each of the 4 towers are interconnected with thick wires running to ground cables, completing the 'Faraday cage'.
Nice! That makes sense considering what might happen if the rocket were stuck by lightning. Yeah, watching a rocket launch that close was a pretty unique experience. Hoping to be able to see one again some day. They happen a lot more frequently in Florida, but I'm not sure if you're able to get as close to the launchpad. There's also a launch site in Boca Chica, TX, but it seems to have even less frequent launches.
How far away from the launch pad is that beach they closed? Also, if you wanted to rent a boat could you get even closer?
Awesome video! I'm considering driving up for the launch on April 15th. This would be my first launch. The launch is supposed to take place between 5:59-7:25 a.m. PST. Any advice for a launch that early? Thanks for sharing!
Wow, so lucky. I've heard that sunrise and sunset launches are the most beautiful to watch. Wish we were able to get back down there! :) My advice would just be the standard "get there early" since the best spots do tend to fill up fast. I would still recommend the area where we watched -- right along Ocean Ave, close to where they close it off, but beyond the tall trees, just beyond the separated median. As close to here: goo.gl/maps/c3Fi37Q6WyQFHdzj6 as you can. Enjoy the experience!
@@HomeARoam Thank you for the advice! Looking forward to it even more now. I'll try to set a tripod up and post some video.
@@HomeARoam it’s been delayed twice 😭. Not sure if we’ll be able to hang around for another day.
I grew up in Lompoc, it is actually pronounced (lom-poke)
Yeah, whoops. I can't believe how many times we said it wrong in the video. 😁😁😁
Lompoc [Lom-poke] is how the locals pronounce the name
I see on your phone it will be slc 4-E Space-X slc4 is closest to W. Ocean Ave and if Surf beach is open is the closest
I drove the trash truck at 7:50 and I see the closure of W. Ocean Ave to Surf Beach but where you are is all you can hope for
Being the trash truck driver to VAFB I've been to all the launch sites
I really liked watching your video
Thanks for the pronunciation! We figured that out a bit too late. 😁 Yeah, I would imagine Surf Beach would be an amazing place to watch the launch, but seems like it's closed for most of the SpaceX launches. That's pretty cool that you've been able to get up close to all the launch sites. Glad you enjoyed the video. Take care!
Did you two ever go back to see anymore launches?
We haven't yet, but this winter we'll be in Texas so who knows, we may get to see a SpaceX launch there!
You’ll need to stick around for more launches so you can rate all the viewing sites first-hand!
Great idea! But sadly we are running out of time for this season. Maybe next year and you two could come with!
@@HomeARoam That would be super fun!!
hi 👋🏻 can I know What Location you recommend to see the spacex rock launch ? :) thx 🙏
Hi there, we present a number of different options in the video. It really depends on if you're looking to be as close as possible, or see be able to see a really wide field of view. If you want to be really close, the best option might be near the intersection of W Ocean Ave & Arguello Blvd.
just as person who lives in lompoc, its actually pronounced Lom-poke. its native American chumash Indian for stagnate water
Thanks for sharing the meaning of the name!
Surf is only closed when the booster is going to return to the launch site, when the booster lands n the barge surf is open, but those launches aren't nearly as exciting.
Good to know! Yeah, I would love to see a booster come back and land. But clearly there's a whole new level of danger when that happens! 🚀
Yea, I lived in LA for 45 years. Moved out about 18 years ago. It is a big Democrat mess now.
Lots of changes everywhere
