Long live the Hossfeld! I’ve got an ancient one (3 digit serial number!) and If I went and bought a new today, it wouldn’t be a bit different! They’ve been making them since the mid/late 20’s!! Great way to make those rings! That eye bending dog is one of my favorite tools on the Hossfeld! I’ve fabricated one for my small mini Hossfeld style bender!

I guessed what you were going to do pretty much after you said "more than fifty per cent of the circle." One thing that I wonder, is if it wouldn't save on metal to have a couple scraps of the flatbar to tack onto the ends before bending and break them off after then bend is done, so as to avoid wasting several inches off each ring. If they were tacked on the outside, theoretically the tension and the being butted up against the edge would keep them from folding. Also, a buddy of mine didn't know this, I don't know what all schooling you've had, but if you ever want to know how much metal you'll need to make a circle, it takes 3.14 times the diameter of the circle. So if you have a four inch diameter, that would be 12.56" for the circumference.

That could be done. The choice of welding on material vs wasting the ends usually comes down to the relation between available time and access to material. Thanks for watching!

Wouldn’t it just be easier to cut off a piece of pipe or tube ?

In some cases, yes. However, in our custom and artistic work making rings out of the same material as other elements in the piece (in this case 1 inch flat bar) ensures that the edges are similar throughout the finished piece. It would be time consuming to grind/polish the entire cut edge of a tube to match. This method also allows us to make custom size rings, and we don't have to store multiple sizes of tube stock in the shop. Thanks for watching!
