      Who's fault is that? Like, technologically-sound people literally couldn't wait an year or two for buying a new GPU? They bought them up at exorbitant prices so Nvidia now considers those exorbitant prices normal. They just know that, even if people really know there isn't any shortage anymore and these cards are just highly overpriced, if they just do it for long enough (which apparently is only about 2-3 years for most people), people will just cave in and start considering this the new normal.

    Obviously Nvidia wants to. Obsolescence whether planned or imposed after the fact forces consumers to give them more revenue. But can Nvidia invent an excuse plausible enough (even if still a complete lie, like fake frames obviously is) that won’t draw too much blowback? That’s the real question.
    Most of their fanboys will cape for them and actually even want them to. These are the people who buy every generation to feel special, and having “exclusive” features only fellow 50-series buyers have potentiates them tribal feels their sense of personal validation depends on.
    But then there’s a much larger portion of gamers who mostly just follow the herd and are no more technically savvy than the average console gamer. If they can be duped wholesale Nvidia will go that path. If the frivolously superfluous expense is sufficiently prohibitive such that they stop to be educated by non-fanboys, such as we saw happen with the 4080 12GB rebranding, then Nvidia may have to be reasonable.

    What a weird place we're in where people are constantly complaining about new hardware having new hardware blocks which allow new features. This was definitely not a thing in the 2000's when every generation made massive hardware changes. You straight up could not run major visual features on generation old hardware whereas the differences between Nvidia's generations have been less abrupt. CPU improvements in that era were drastic as well, and full system upgrades every two years were not just common, they were necessary if you wanted to run new games at 40+ fps.
    We're pretty lucky to be where we're at now. You can upgrade to newer hardware if you want to, but four year old GPUs like the 3080 are still providing great performance with the majority of the visual quality of current hardware, and people on Zen 3 CPUs from the same era still have a good couple years before they really need to upgrade.

Here's a truth bomb that might be a little hard to swallow for you, but i'll have a go anyway: the upscaling/FG featureset by Nvidia is god-tier, everyone knows it. We really don't. We know that they're greedy and sell overpriced products with too little VRAM, but the software support for existing hardware hasn't really been an issue. Frame Generation is an exception to the rule, and it hasn't hinted at some sort of new planned obsolescence strategy, but at Nvidia feeling like the optical flow accelerators are genuinely necessary to have. And to be fair, Frame Gen was never promised to earlier generations in the first place so nobody has really been ripped off here. Since Frame Gen, Nvidia has introduced Ray Reconstruction, RTX HDR, ChatRTX, G-Assist, etc. Distributed to the entire RTX lineup. Nvidia could've easily locked all of those features to 40-series GPUs in order to compel people to upgrade, and when asked for justification, simply lied about how "the AI hardware of prior generations is simply too weak for us to support without compromising on quality" or such, but they didn't. Nvidia could introduce software that only supports the newest and shiniest 50-series hardware, but judging by their past, odds are that they won't.
      Before someone inevitably calls me an ngreedia fanboy, I have never owned any Nvidia hardware and am typing this on an AMD rig.

    I dont expect a new feature like Frame Gen or so but I wouldnt be surprised if they released DLSS 4, where they further increased the image quality when you use the upscaling.
    I absolutely hate that Nvidia and AMD both use DLSS/FSR as names for two completely techniques - Upscaling and Frame Generation. They should have named them something else, so normal ppl dont get confused.
    when I talk about DLSS, I mean the upscaling. When I talk about Frame Generation, I say that. Nvidia/AMD should do the same. But yeah, whatever.
    I think the next thing Nvidia wants to do is to widen the image quality gap between DLSS (upscaling!) and FSR (upscaling!) and since DLSS (upscaling!) is available on all RTX cards (20/30/40 series), Im sure a potential DLSS 4, with improved image quality when upscaling, wont be locked to the 50 series.

    • @DELTA9XTC
      @DELTA9XTC 3 місяці тому

      I could also see that they manage to further reduce latency when using Frame Generation, possibly through higher bandwith (GDDR7?) or another new thing on the hardwareside? FG is usable on 40 series but maybe they can make some changes to 50 series, so it works a bit better. That would technically be locked to 50 series in that case.

    One hardware feature that would be useful, would be a dedicated RTX voice ASIC on the GPU package. The current implementation uses the same cores that would be active during gaming, thus you get a performance hit and in some game workloads, you can end up with audio artifacts, especially in edge cases where the GPU is especially unoptimized for a workload, for example Nvidia GPUs will freak out and chug if you take a game that does internal supersampling, and combine it with Nvidia DL-DSR (PS, it will render most games unplayable even if they are otherwise relatively easy to run, as frame rates will drop to the single digits), it will also cause issues with RTX voice. PS, current GPUs in general seem to not like 2 separate super sampling stages, and instead prefer 1 stage, thus no simple work around for games that limit you to 2X super sampling.
    On the other hand, video that supports Nvidia's hardware decoding, will remain smooth in those same scenarios. This shows that the video decoding is truly using a dedicated ASIC.
    They need to give RTX voice the same treatment.

    • @mojojojo6292
      @mojojojo6292 3 місяці тому

      I've never seen a single game that does super sampling that is not optional. It's a very demanding setting. Why would any company force it internally or why would you try and run 2 different super sampling methods together?

    • @Razor2048
      @Razor2048 3 місяці тому

      @mojojojo6292 Supersampling is optional, one issue is some games will limit how much Supersampling can be done. While in the past the limits were reasonable since the limits of the time period left high end cards running below 30FPS, though with hewer high end cards, the super sampling is easy to handle to a point where a user may want additional super sampling such as with DL-DSR. It is effectively the forcing of a completely impractical level of super sampling for modern games, and quite the niche use case.
      Beyond that, no game would do super sampling be default, it still remains the most inefficient method for smoothing edges while maintaining sharpness.

    Like John mentioned nvidia really need to consider the 4-5 slot GPU model so it can stack multiple layers of PCBs which in theory could allow this card to be shorter in length to actually fit in a full tower chassis. Lets be real how many slots would you use in a rig beside the ones taken by the GPU? Big fat 0! So why not improve the design and make the card use as many slots as it needs so that you can reduce the length of it to actually fit even in a godamn full tower
    Absolutely ridiculous you gotta go out of your way to use a buzzsaw and cut the entire frame holding the harddrive bays in your FULL TOWER chassis just to fit a damn 4090 in there lol. My 3080 Ti barely fit in it there was like 1/2 an inch space left so I had to buzzsaw the whole metal frame holding the drive bays to accept the behemoth cards they release now! My full tower is a Thermaltake Chaser MK-I from 2004 and I never wanted to replace it with the boring plain boxes they have now. That tower was one of the best looking chassis design for its era and now most chassis towers have the plain boring design so I had no choice but buzsaw the drive bay metal frame to give me more room

      the reason DLSS is so much better than FSR, is that Nvidia has literal hardware for it with the Tensor cores.
      something that works on all GPUs on a software/driver level, will never be as good as something with specific hardware for it. so you should stop dreaming and just stay realistic. either AMD does the same as Nvidia or their features will always be worse. Also on an Nvidia card you can use both anyways, DLSS and FSR. Considering how good DLSS upscaling is, its absolutely warranted for Nvidia to ask for more money than AMD. If you play at 4k, you can easily use DLSS PERFORMANCE and still have a crazy good picture quality, where you probably wont see any difference to native (with TAA i.e.) really. you certainly dont see any difference with DLSS quality and also balanced at 4k resolution.
      You do see a difference with FSR. and this wont change to the same degree that DLSS changed since its first inception

    • @DELTA9XTC
      @DELTA9XTC 3 місяці тому +2

      I certainly respect AMDs open source approach but if AMD continues with that and only with that, they will ALWAYS stay behind Nvidia. IMO they will do that anyways bc Nvidia has so much more money to invest and they are already on such a good level. But AMD could at least come close to it, if they build/used the AI cores in the RX 7000 series for a FSR version that operates like DLSS

    a big hardware feature id like to see that wouldnt be DLSS related would be hardware acceleration for BVH build / rebuild, currently that is done on either the CPU or the shaders, but such a thing is accelerated by imagination technologies so we know its possible. In games that have a rich BVH but a low ray count such as Spiderman or Resident Evil 8. the BVH build time can represent just as much time as the tracing of rays, so there is tons of room for improvement there. the burden of BVH build also represents one of the biggest barriers between NO raytracing and any raytracing as once you've already committed to maintaining the BVH adding additional RT effects beyond the first is not nearly as burdensome. this has the potential to significantly close the gap between RT ON and RT OFF performance in games especially those that are only using it for the basics like reflections or shadows.
