This video has summed up perfectly how I feel about pre-loved. I respect people who can happily buy and accept pre-loved. But I am also relived to know I am not the only who feels the way I do.
Lovely video once again, I love how you deal with these topics so respectfully. I’ve OCD (the clinical condition not just a cute way to say I’m neat) so buying online in general sometimes trigger intrusive thoughts and anxiety. I remember once I convinced myself the delivery people must of stolen my item as it was late arriving. I don’t think I could cope with preowned…maybe from a consignment store where there is an actual brick and mortar business
I am completely on the preloved train but appreciate hearing other opinions. Fakes are a real issue you have to deal with and a valid concern. Thanks for the video.
I buy both new and pre-loved. I like sustainability and saving money, and like vintage because the quality is exceptional, and the idea of adding my own memories to a bag that’s already touched other people’s lives is cool- it has a history in the same way as old houses. That said, I do also love a brand new, beautifully packaged bag from the shop with the lovely box and papers and cards,. It’s pristine and the smell of that new leather is wonderful! It is a whole experience in and of itself.
I had wonderful experiences in pre-loved stores before. The SAs at the store were knowledgeable and fun. But I always prefer to buy a new bag. No matter how wonderful the experience, no matter that my SA at Louis Vuitton confirmed its authenticity. I just wasn't confident that it was real. Nowadays, the preloved bags are not competitively priced. To me, it's not worth saving a couple hundred dollars when I'm already spending thousands. I'd rather pay full price so I can feel 100% sure it's real, among the other "pros" that listed.
I agree. I think they are not competitively priced enough for me to forego the whole luxury boutique experience and rest easy knowing that the bag is real.
Everything you said resonates with me.i only buy in boutiques. I always buy when I'm traveling. So many beautiful memories to cherish.i just cannot buy pre loved details like the leather, finishes, whether it's an exotic, the experience of buying something that will always be with me.i also don't sell and so have around 70 bags .love them all.some I use more than others but that's to be expected
I think for me I would consider pre-loved on a case by case basis. If I was interested in a bag that was no longer made, then obviously pre-loved is the only option. I wouldn’t got pre-loved just to save a few hundred. If I’m going to spend that much on a bag, I’d rather just go all the way and get one that is ALL mine. And I also have strong memories associated with certain purchases. It makes them really special, and I love that. As someone who has never even been inside a boutique yet, I am really looking forward to the whole experience someday. On a side note, I am an avid fountain pen user, and have recently discovered the joys of vintage fountain pens. I used to think they could get really expensive, but then I took a good look around the luxury handbag scene. Now they seem much more reasonable. 😂 So I’m good with keeping most of my “pre-loved” purchases confined to fountain pens. They’re usually better made than newer ones, and I get to help them continue their story.
I’m the odd one! I have the exact opposite feeling about LV patina lol I hated it when it’s brand new , I sold two brand new LV bags bc I’m scared of the patina, NF and keepall bandoulière , I couldn’t use it because the fresh patina, I purchased LV World tour NF with black leather, and vintage keepall with honey patina, couldn’t be happier lol but I get your points too! Nice video! Thanks
I agree 100% with your reasons for not buying pre-loved bags ! 👍 But my number 1 reason for never ever buying one is that I would feel it was dirty... You never know what level of personal hygiene the person (or persons) that owned it before had...
I've purchased new & preloved. The only difference is stores make you wait forever while they wrap the bag where as resale, (from a reputable consignment store), there's less fuss and a saving of money !
For me it depends. I have bought both too and I enjoy and feel confident with both. Some brands don’t keep their value and it makes sense to buy preloved. Other brands don’t have much difference between the new and preloved prices, for now, so I feel I might as well get a new one. I also love vintage bags and the only way of buying them is preloved.
Around eight years ago, I bought a Celine bucket bag from Real Real and when it arrived, it stunk high heavens in the interior. The Real Real was willing to take it back and reimburse me without questions. I had decided for whatever reason to put coffee beans inside and totally forgot about the bag until 2020. The bag is exceptional. It is a vintage and high quality Celine signature exterior. It has so many hidden pockets that I love. I took it to the store because, like you Emma, I have trust issues. It is an original Celine bag. I think the owner could not get rid of the stench and sold it. Boutique experience is special. I have bought handbags online and it is never the same experience. I am asking my husband for a Lady Dior Medium and we are going to the boutique to choose my favorite color. The Lady Dior has been on my wish list for years. Thank you so very much for sharing your experience.
Love this video and agree! Nice to know someone else feels the same way as me. After watching so many other people buy and sell online with no problem… I just haven’t been able to do that! I usually spend a lot of time deciding what I want in my collection and then go purchase it new. For the bags I want.. it isn’t enough savings to buy it preloved anyway. ❤❤❤
These are the same reasons I don’t lean towards pre-loved, but I have thought about it recently. It really depends on the item and the seller. Buying from UA-camrs I have watched for a long time who are looking to sell because an item no longer brings them joy is something I might consider if it’s a really hard to find piece. Love your channel by the way. You bring up some very good points and your personality is really down-to-earth. Hello from NYC! 💖
Do you ever worry about buying a bag that was returned to the store but is actually a fake? I have heard of people returning fakes and keeping the real bag.
That has been my biggest fear with my first Chanel classic flap that I purchased last yr during New Year's eve. I bought it in a Chanel boutique inside Neiman's Marcus. The bag was a display with the tag already cut off from the bag, half torn off from the torn area and stuffed inside the back of the Mon Alisa pocket. I guessed it was probably a returned item? I had to thoroughly examined the bag over and over again even till this day. It seems legit but still I'm always wondering.
I would say this... Getting a Preloved Birkin or Kelly, then sending to Hermes store to spa it is a sure shot way of knowing it's real as otherwise Hermes destroys the bag. Considering you said you don't like the games Hermes plays to offer a bag - Birkin or Kelly, this is the only exception l would recommend
So true, I like the experience of going into a boutique, you know what you are getting.I’ve looked several times at pre loved but there is always doubt in my mind as to it’s authenticity and sometimes the price that the pieces are selling at are the same as a boutique or more. I remember purchasing my Chanel small classic wallet I’d saved for ages as it was something I’d always wanted, walking into Chanel in Harrods was nerve racking and exciting at the same time and the sa that served me was the most loveliest lady, the feeling you get carrying around your neatly wrapped package afterwards it’s either you get it or you don’t, I definitely get it.
I 100% agree with all your reasons - I’m the same in that I’ve virtually given up on preloved. I used to buy preloved and sold them all as didn’t get the connection with it for the reasons you mention.
Would you be at all interested in buying preloved directly from brands such as Chanel/Dior/LV, if they started a scheme like this? Also if they authenticated refurbished and repackaged them like new so that you are getting a vintage item but get the full experience of buying new?
I buy both preloved and new bags. AS long sa its from a reputable place like the real real or Rebag im not concerned. It means I could get bags I coolant have got hold of such as my Kelly 28 in rough coeur (perfect condition and I payed well over the price if it was new) But as long as we enjoy our bags everything's cool.
Ty for sharing this. I’ve always wondered as some items would be cheaper preloved but didn’t want to say something/ask. as I didn’t want to be seen as giving shade.
I too have never bought bags pre loved. Same reasons as you. I would always have a doubt. Plus too hard to return if you are not happy. I have bought a couple of ready to wear from vestiaire but not bags - too big a risk. I am really wanting a puzzle bag and think it might be a good one to buy preloved as I could prob get a bargain but there’s something stopping me. I have heard too many horror stories. Also I agree I like the whole experience of in store shopping. Never say never though x. I would def buy from a friend as I could be sure about the authenticity.
I struggle with pre loved also as I take really good care of my things and am really picky about any marks, scratches etc. I have bought from NPN bags as I love how detailed the listings are and every tiny mark is pointed out. The bag I bought was in brand new condition with all the receipts, packaging etc so I would definitely buy from Sian again xx
It’s also price for me. If I am going to spend nearly as much, and sometimes more, on a second hand item I’d rather just get it from the boutique to gain the other benefits you mentioned e.g returns and repairs
Thanks for the video!!! I have not every bought preloved. So thankful to have had the opportunity to go into boutiques early on. I too get paranoid about authenticity from preloved markets. Actually, I’m so paranoid, I’m paranoid even about boutiques! Lol, like what if someone bought it and switched it and it fell through the cracks! I know it’s very unlikely but it’s still something that crosses my mind. At least the boutique would take care of an issue like that for me and there’s a system in place keeping track of purchases. I don’t like that people have used a bag in using. Being a nurse, I will say, some people and their practices are so gross! What on earth did they do & use the bag for? Idk but worst case scenarios cross my mind lol. Boutique experience I don’t care for. Memory attached to bag, yes I love that. I too have memories attached for each one 🤍 More chanel videos pls! Lol. Particularly timeless classic tote!!! I know you say it hasn’t held up but is it still worth if after all the use and functionality?!
As a doctor, I am sure you can appreciate my reason or some of the other viewers here. I'm wired to be paranoid of germs. I don't know how a used bag was treated and how it was cared for, especially the interior that you cannot clean. Was it set on the ground of the subway? Airplane? Public bathroom? Diaper changing station (sorry moms!). Thrown in a bin at the airport security with shoes? I've seen it enough to know I would not want to put my things into that bag. That's just me. I do wish I could buy used bags since there are great savings, but that and authenticity worries are a deterrent for me.
I appreciate and agree with your points. For me a lot comes down to whether the item I want to buy holds it’s value. A good example would be Chanel Reissue bags. I love them but dear lord I would never pay retail. Reissues simply don’t hold value well and while I rarely sell bags I won’t be ripped off and Reissues at retail feel like getting ripped off.
Another thing about preloved that no one talks about is that some people steal those bags and then sell them to consignment shops or online to make quick money. The resell market is a big reason why so many people are stealing bags these days. When you buy from the boutique, you know that you are buying a bag that was made at the workshop/factory and not stolen from somebody else.
I only purchased vintage bag or watch because they are old model/ discontinued and for these I only buy from japanese 2nd hand shop. For some reason, i only trust their QC and work ethic.
I'm one of those people who has memories associated with things, I can remember what I wore the day I met my husband (as well as what he wore), that's 18 years ago! Almost all of my more expensive bags have memories attached, as has a lot of my jewellery. I can also get on board with some of your other reasons - the fake/ genuine fear is real! As is liking things to be in box fresh condition. I have bought things pre-loved, but it's usually been things like scarves and costume jewellery, always in good condition, and for prices that I wouldn't mind paying for an item that is non branded and brand new.
This is why most of my bags are bought new, but I've made a couple exceptions at a local consignment store. I like the boutique experience and the guaranteed authenticity. Buying secondhand online would really stress me out.
Lovely video, Emma. I don’t and can’t buy pre-loved. Though I earn a very small income (being an Indian in India compared to my first world counterparts) I cannot imagine claiming something as mine that wasn’t mine from out of the box. I can’t use someone else’s perfectly useable clothes, gadgets etc. Same goes for luxury. That’s just me and I’m perfectly fine with it. Some people are just wired different and that’s ok too. TFS. ✌🏼
I have a couple preowned items and I'm ok with going the pre-owned route but I try not to make it a habit because fakes are everywhere.Just to add more paranoia, I wonder if people are successful returning fakes to the store. I returned one bag awhile ago and the manager didn't even look at it and refunded me right away.
I agree with all your points. Lately, I’ve heard that some SAs at luxury boutiques are substituting super-dupes for authentic bags. This is really disheartening. It’s the world we live in. Sigh… .
These are all good points and I have to say I'm not a fan of buying preowned either. I'd add odor to the list - I'm smell sensitive and just can't handle the faintest whiff of anything. I do have a Reissue that's preowned, purchased at a third of the retail in perfect condition - I'm happy with that one. You have a boy, I have only boys - who are we going to leave our nice things to??
Non of this is cringe, all very normal, I have bought pre-loved but I’m very ocd careful, I vet the seller or site and the item myself, then get it double authenticated. I much prefer buying new from store for so many of the reasons you say, and actually on the bags I like you don’t save much buying the pre-loved anyway, and if it’s nearly same price I want brand new from store. That said I do sell my bags, but with box, store bag, dust bag and receipt, plus sometimes a photo of me with it at the store it makes the sale easy, I’m always scared though someone keeps my bag but says it’s a fake.
I agree with your second point iv been so close to buying pre loved but then there's that little gremlin on my shoulder saying.... what if its fake you'll be gutted if its not real 🤯
@@Emmaanders yes same here but it worries me that some of the pre loved isn't much cheaper than buying new so if I spent that type of money then it wasn't real oh my days I would have a melt down plus I agree with you on the instore experience I just love going in store trying what ever I'm buy having a drink while I wait for them to wrap it and if I know I'm definitely buying on that day I make a whole day of it so I would go for drinks and food somewhere nice with my bags I love it x
The potential nagging doubt, that’s what’s gets me too. It’s okay for smaller ticket items but not for anything very expensive items (Chanel classic flaps, Hermes bags) for me. Too much money for me to have a single sliver of doubt.
The only Chanel I have is preowned. I think because I know of an authenticator I highly trust, and also because I don't really feel GREAT giving Chanel my direct money, considering Coco Chanel's icky Nazi-adjacent history. Also, my local Chanel was not very nice to me. *shrug* But I prefer to buy new LV!
Also a reason I buy more Lv than Chanel… never manage to go to a store to buy a Chanel… the only Chanel I have my sis in law bought for me on my behalf when she went to the store
I buy high-end contemporary brands as I can justify their price point based on quality and how long I will keep/use because I do get bored quickly and sell my bags once I am done with them. My collection is very small, I keep it under 10 bags at all times, I pay full price directly from the brand for peace of mind. I do like to receive a factory wrapped item and know I am the first person who is touching the bag after it left the factory. To me buying preloved is too much work and effort and you come to realize not all sellers are reliable or hold my standards because when I sell my bags and indicate pristine or excellent condition they truly are. I do not get into these "authentication" games, not worth my time.
I can’t buy prevloved bags/clothes too many germs 🦠, it gives me the 🤢. I only by preloved jewelry and sunglasses in excellent or NWT condition, and even then I clean it throughly with hot water and soap! 🧼
This video has summed up perfectly how I feel about pre-loved. I respect people who can happily buy and accept pre-loved. But I am also relived to know I am not the only who feels the way I do.

The only second hand bag I will consider buying is the kelly… only because I’m not up for the Hermes game
I'm exactly the same. I would rather buy new from store. Plus I feel pre-loved markets the bags are more expensive than in store.
It's so annoying isn't it- because the preloved market is amazing- and I'm always looking at it xx
Authenticate plus
Ps always honest Emma and that’s why your successful. Xx
Watching now. Thank you for sharing your video ♥️
xx hope you and your family are all doing well
The potential nagging doubt, that’s what’s gets me too. It’s okay for smaller ticket items but not for anything very expensive items (Chanel classic flaps, Hermes bags) for me. Too much money for me to have a single sliver of doubt.
I just be so scare to go pre loved and get screw of a lot money, I prefer play save, love you my dear
Thanks! Exactly the same x
The point no is the main thing for me. I just won’t believe anyone unless I buy it from boutique
No 2 I mean
Ha! I buy my LV online so don’t really care about the in store experience
There are things to buy pre-loved and there are things that you should not buy pre-loved. To each her own I suppose.
You are attached to my saddle 💕
Whenever I want original authentic bag, i only go to *authentic bags belgium* 🥰
Fakes are so good scary to buy preloved even boutique have been fooled
Hahah... Snob! 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
When I was filming I totally fore-saw this comment and pre-empted it in my intro...! xx
Not snobby. Super smart! 👏🏼👏🏼
Think preloved is awesome love that it might have belonged to a dead person
I can’t buy prevloved bags/clothes too many germs 🦠, it gives me the 🤢. I only by preloved jewelry and sunglasses in excellent or NWT condition, and even then I clean it throughly with hot water and soap! 🧼
