  • The 2024 planting season has begun and it is finally time to plant! Today we are planting the field with the draft horses.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Honestly I think I would rather hear the horses working, the sound of the machinery going through the dirt and nature in the background 😊

The majesty of your horses, their steadiness and willingness to work and learn is a true reflection of your training, care, and affection for these “gentle giants.” I can’t believe how far along Baron, Duke, and Earl have come. And your stars in Ken and Bill to train and mentor. Drone shots were great!!!!!

I can only echo what @deb283028 has stated. Brenda's camera angles at times surely points out the majesty of your horses !! I learned today exactly what an "evener" does (I think ?).
It "evens" out the load, so to speak among the team !! So every horse is pulling the same (even) load !! I thought that was clever, and tip my hat to whoever "invented" it !! Some of our ancestors were a lot smarter than we give credit !! (If you know what I mean, Jim ?)

Ken is such a calm giant of a horse. He stood there like a statue (until he was alone then he figured he deserved a little hay 😂). But seeing you backing those three up at the end Ken looked like a pinball getting bumped left and right 😅 he stood his ground though and showed them how its done

What a great day to work out in the fields. I could watch Baron work all day. He's such a gorgeous horse! Earl certainly got a good workout. Love the drone work. You are so blessed to have William helping you. Very nice video today.

Jim - regarding not being able to use audio with the drone footage and difficulties with music: you can always use the audio from older videos where you are doing field work and not speaking. The viewers won't be able to tell the difference!

Jim, Brenda and William , Thank you all for bringing us along on the on the harrowing and planting today. The mixture of Timothy , Alfalfa and Oats should work great. Earl and Baron did really well being balanced off with Steady Ken . The Near and Far outside horses inside bit ring being strapped and snapped on to Ken's hame rings works well . The seed drill and culta-packer can be quite noisy and a heavy load to draw with the younger horses and could be bit spooky starting out . But Earl and Baron supported hy Steady Ken did really well. The ground filming and drone footage combination of You in the beginning and then William finishing up was great. Good Luck with acquiring the new planer motor from Wood Miser.

Skippy leading the way and supervising all of the work being done. Cultipackers are heavy I have assembled a few of them in my younger years. They are made out of cast iron for the weight to pack the seeds in the ground. The soil looks ready for planting not too wet or too dry. William did well driving the horses in the morning while you were trying to get the planer parts on the phone. Brenda please send me the energy pills that Skippy takes. I really don't know how you keep up with all of the running around to take these videos for us. MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU IN HIS HANDS,WILLIAM TOO. PLEASE STAY SAFE.

Congratulations on planting the first field of 2024. Your choice to use a 3-horse hitch seems to have paid off, Earl gets more time learning, Ken and Baron are steady workers. Brenda, you worked really hard to get some great shots from different angles, I applaud you. Jim, the drone footage is so good at showing how the farm is put together, thanks for that. Nice field planting! I could see the coltipactor pushing some good sized stones down, you'll get more stones picked next time but you are finding a good balance.. The last time I planted a mix seed like you use, I used a hand beater spreader, they are a large cotton canvas bag at your tummy (strap around your neck) and you spin a hand wheel, it spreads the seed amazingly well! I asked where Dad's coltipactor was so I could do that and my brother had borrowed it out and they never returned it! It was just like yours Jim, I remember it when I was a little kid. Now my nephew plants the field and he is doing well.
Nice field Jim! you got it in , in a perfect time, you'll have some cold nights but hopefully no frost on the tender shoots coming up. I wish you an abundance in your crop. Thank you for taking us/me along. Brings back great memories, nice work to All including the horses. Very nice.

Wish I could see the horses in person though. Ken is such a great horse to help "the young bucks😘" in their training! The drone views are beautiful, showing the pretty field you're planting as well as the gorgeous green pastures!!!!!❤ Would love for you to spend some time with Lady as she's in her last weeks of pregnancy so we can see how she's doing and how much weight she's gained! Jim, if you weld a "tab" on the cull-a-pactor (a top and bottom) the pin will pull evenly, be easier to install and remove. I would do it for you but I'm in Alabama. I really like your videos and my dad would have liked watching your horses. He grew up "working horses". A rock hound attachment on the skid steer would be a quick & easy way to remove rocks from your fields. I know, it's a horse video but you don't have to record the skid steer.

I never thought of a drone as a farm tool but it could really be quite useful for looking at fields and rooves and all kinds of stuff instead of having to walk out there and physically check, not to mention the birds eye view gives a different perspective. The videos are great. I do not understand how you have the time to do them and edit them.
Did you have to fill the bin of the drill more than once?

At 31:50, I've been watching 2 years and have yet to see a crooked row.

The music was fine. I really dislike it when people have music and talk at the same time. I really enjoy no talking and the natural noises. There is something meditative about it for me.

As others have said, the drone shots were wonderful.
Wanting straight drill rows is amazing. I thought you just did that for plowing and corn. Remember, when the oats are a foot high, you won’t be able to tell straight from crooked. 😊😊😊
Barron wanted to follow the wheel track much like following the furrow when plowing. Did he ever learn to stay just left of the wheel track?
