  • Today we have a special helper back at the farm- Olivia! Olivia is on break from college to become a vet tech and she has been working with the horses. Today Olivia is harnessing up the horses, then we are doing some training with Baron, our Suffolk Punch stallion. We are trying something new today, so be sure to watch until the end!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I ve found being shorter a great advantage with tendinng to hooves 17.2hh horse im barely bending down haha. And I can jump on any horse below 18hh from the ground without saddle . Short doesnt mean powerless

The size difference is even less, when you consider Lady is wearing shoes and Baron is barefoot!! A great video showing people what horsemanship is about!! Thank you so much Jim and the best of the New you for you, Brenda and family, and of course, the horses

Aye, with longer videos you can see the details better. Horsemanship is a lot about horse language - which you cannot catch when the video is too short.

Thats a good secure hold on the Lines. One that easy to make and relies if needed, Keeps Baron and Lady from pulling free and keeps you from having to Strip your Lines to keep presser where it's needed when its needed. Jim you a great teacher, this young lady will learn a lot from you, how to do it right and why!

Baron is pretty close to Lady's height now, plus she has her snow shoes on making her a little taller. Of course Lady is bigger in her rump as her pregnancy tends to cause extra weight there in addition to her belly. She and Baron did pretty good on their first time out together! Lady just trying to be Speedy Gonzalez to show off for Baron😘 Tell Andy we appreciate his help there at the end! And also we appreciate Olivia helping out during her Christmas break! She'll be a great vet tech! P.S. I like longer videos! I always watch them 2 or 3 times anyway in order to get more time watching the horses! I love all your horses.

Feeding Cows with a well-trained Team is a joy and a pleasure beyond masur. The Okes Brothers Ranch from Gunnison Colorado brought down 1300 Head and scattered thin on Bull Masa West of Cedaredge Colorado. I helped feed that 1300 head scattered in different pastures. We made a tool for cutting baling strings, it worked rely well. We took a 1,1/2" x 5/16" inch piece of flat strap Steel, drilled 2 Holes in one end and Riveted a Sickel Section to that end. Drilled a 3Rd Hole on the poised end, sawed a 5/16" x 2" inch Ring in half and mounted the ring to the other end and welded it back to gather so it wouldn't fall off. Made it a little harder to louse! Pocket knives settle to some spot and stop to be found sometimes. All we had to do was drag it Sickel Section across the bales we were feeding, it cut the strings really well, we were able to pull the strings off quickly as needed. We had a Trail full of Cows and Calves, at times we had to weave in, out and around them.

We had saddle horses, I always pushed out trotting and cantering, insisted they walked every step of the way home, training youngster ponies always with children in mind. Snowy River ponies in Australia. An old mountain man told me to do that, they all became big bold walkers, and I'd top the local auction every year with whatever I had chosen to work for a year. I could only do real justice to one at a time. The rest were sold handled as 2 yo.

Jim you do a great job with them, your voice is calming to the horses. I used to ride quarter and Tennessee walkers in horse shows when I was younger. Some of those had pretty bad tempers! Do you use Wintershoes for the horses with spikes like we do in scandinavia? the shoe is prepeared for threaded bolt spikes. A huge difference in safety for the horse, to avoy slippery falls that knock their theet out or worse. We got a lot of steap terrain here, so it feels nessesary . btw, thanks for all the entertainment and sharing of good work this year, wish you all a happy new year from a Norwegian follower!

Hi Jim, regarding your question about the length of your videos. I do prefer them shorter but when your driving I skip forward so still watch them to the end.

Good to see you, Olivia. You have a good "way" about you. Jim, I liked this longer video, too. Your explanations of and why you're doing things is especially interesting. Happy New Year and God bless.

We used to smear Vicks Vapo rub in the lower nostrils of our stud when we took him out to show or work in a setting where he might encounter mares. Taking away scent stimulus, seemed to really tone down any studishness.

Good Morning Jim and Brenda. I just wanted to thank you for the videos. Christine and I watch them together and something interesting has happened lately that I think you'd appreciate. When I say or do something as a husband that is perceived as being "out of line" Christine has started saying "cafel - Cafel step" knowing it's something I'll understand. It's been very effective I must say. Thanks again for sharing yourselves, It's making a positive difference. happy new year!!

Jim, you sure go through the spectrum of what horsemanship is and, shall we say, horsewomanship.
You make room to our own reflexion on all those issues. I like it a lot.
To conclude, when you showed us the hole in the wall, I'm happy no issue happened at 27:36.
    Gaëtan ...
