Have done this type of repair a view times for clients. You explain it so well and give people confidence to do this simple repair themselves! Good point about the instructions. It is worth reading them, but sometimes they are useless or even blatantly wrong.
Home RenoVision DIY Home RenoVision DIY Lucky neighbor. Thanks for the video. Great balance of easy to digest, step by step guidance blended with personality and humor. I especially enjoyed the "big box store" advice. Lol! Classic. Happy holidays!
The latch on my patio door no longer catches, spring mechanism inside seems to be broken. Did you buy this new handle/latch assembly at a local DIY store or a specialty door/window store? I am taking the assembly out of the door and will bring it with me. thanks (ps also in Ottawa)
Appreciate the vid,but what do you do when one of the main screws won’t come out? I keep trying to unscrew it but the flat part from the outside of the door just keeps spinning so I can’t remove it
I am having an issue with adding a key core to an existing patio door handle... There is only one keyway hole inside the mortise lock, however the spindle pin from the new key core needs to go in the same keyway hole as the old existing inside locking lever. And they both cannot fit in the same keyway hole at same time..... do these spindle pins need to get cut in length in order both be able to go in the same keyway ? (so that each end of spindle pin is inside the keyway).... Let me know if that makes sense! Thank you Mr DIY!
Has anyone tried to retrofit/install this type of mortise lock on an aluminum sliding glass door that originally had a non-mortise type lock? There appears to be room in the aluminum channel with some work.
I bought a $300 screen door from Lowes last year. Last week the latch stopped working. I took it apart and brought it to Lowes looking for a replacement latch but they didn't even have any replacements full handle sets for my door (they still sell the exact door model). The associate went rummaging through some plastic bins on the top shelf and came down with a full set and gave it to me no charge. I'm still kinda shocked.
If you ever need a replacement part these stores will even open a box and give it to you and send the rest of the contents back to the manufacturer. you need to be resolute for them to do this.
I have replaced the handle and lock at my house but when I try to lock it from outside it unlocks when I take the key out how can I fix this problem???
Very nicely presented, good camera angle and detail of advice too. The only thing missing was cutting the length of the breakaway 'tongue' from inside the lock. I'm not sure how to measure and once it's cut too short...
Old handle had an adjustable locking hook. New handle is not adjustable. So eventho the screw holes are 10cm apart on the old handle AND the new handle, it's the locking hook that is screwing everything up. Can I drill new holes in my vinyl door so that I can at least use the existing locking mechanism?
You should do a video on a complete sliding glass door replacement. I have a double door single in swing that I would like to replace with a slider. I love your videos and know I'd be able to do it with your help :)
I am changing mine right now, but it won't lock even if I put the lock system (on the doorframe) a little bit higher or lower. It just won't click in place. Please help me
could you provide me with the brand lock you used. It looks similar to what I'm looking for and cant seem to find anywhere in Canada. or provide me with the name of the store.
Great video My problem is that my door handles dont have visible screws only a slot at the back of the handle Cannot get this thing off......please give me some ideas
I know it's been awhile since this comment but just incase.. I thought I would mention having this similiar issue with a commercial door handle. I finally found that there is usually a release button inside of that slot (for mine you had to insert a skinny pin to release while twisting the outer body counterclockwise 🙄) Took me hours searching Google. If you can figure out manufacturer or a similar type brand then Google search the entire sentence, you should run across some link or video that should help.
Good video,my problem is with the damn spring inside the latch. I keep searching for a better quality latch.I live in rural Humboldt county,Calif.... one choice Ace ....;o/
Interesting, 1989 home and both have failed within the last month I would rather find a direct replacement but we will see. Pet Cat Max decided he was over due for a walk on his own (He's a smart cat and opened the door on his own) and I took (#F^&*) for it from the wife and daughter. All else fails I will go this method but I would like to see a direct replacement if possible. Great video on the subject and North eastern Illinois for your push pin map.
Helpful, yes, but this is yet another video where we watch someone guess at how to fix something. That’s why it’s so much better to get a direct replacement part, and not have to hope it works. It’s fixed, it went well, and that’s the important thing. Oh, and I learned from having many times replaced door hardware, you shouldn’t reassemble with a cordless bit driver, it’s very easy to cross thread.
Title is wrong, you replaced more than the handle, I replaced my BF Rich (belly-up) lock latch mechanism with a stick. I guess I will look for a lock-latch one more time.
First off, don't bash a person with a minimum wage job, FYI your first mistake was seeking advise from a "big box stores" associate, those are for DYIfers... If you want a professional help, hire one. 🤦♀️
Empowering you to fuck it up so bad you will have to replace the whole damn door...lol. @IvyVILOS for those of us born mechanically disadvantaged through tragic life experience stepping into this world knows better than to try and be handy. My attempt at being handy cost me $500 extra dollars and a near divorce. Beverly and I will stick with making the call. Now get over there and fix her damn door! 😛
Sir, my patio sliding door latch is locked in and my lever is broke and doesnt engage with the mortise lock to open the latch..what do i do? I cant open the door to replace it

Worked like a charm, thanks.
This guy's the neighbor we all wish we had.
Funny thing is I actually fixed the neighbors door the day we shot this video.

Hi Jeff, our door is locked shut and we can get it open. we can take the handle off but I wonder how we'll get the lock set off?
I have the same problem any solution?
THANK YOU!!!

Would it be wise to just replace the lock if my door is having issues locking or jut replace the whole thing, lock and handle?
Having same issue. I see this guy didn't reply. Did you figure it out?

I have this same question what did you do?
Thanks for the video. Where did you get that extension for your driver? I can’t find one anywhere.
Jeff, I have JW sliding glass doors. The interior handle fell off. Do I need a whole new handle set or is there a way to reattach it? Thank you!

Hey chief so you have a video about how to out a lock on a sliding metal frame glass door which does not have any lock assembly? Put*

Sorry we missed that for you. when in doubt follow the manufacturer's instructions.

My door around the handle is cracked. Can that be fixed or do I need a new door?
How much did you charge to do that. replace and buy the handle?
Free for my pal Max.
Where can you buy the hardware
could you provide me with the brand lock you used. It looks similar to what I'm looking for and cant seem to find anywhere in Canada. or provide me with the name of the store.

Geezz...replacing Handle looks like APAC (A Piece A Cake)😮
Lol I wasn't paying attention and the lock mechanism fell into the door....his was different lol
good video how about telling us the door lock brand and number
Not sure at this point but I found it at home depot. They were pretty good at working with me and opened a few boxes to compare the hardware sizes.

Should have checked the key. Thats the problem I'm having. Everything works but couldn't get the key out.

That's great until the manufacturer cuts the line and no longer has replacements. Or goes belly up.
I think I will call a handyman.
That would be a good idea.
Lucky. I can't find the fit I need to save my life. Been searching for months and the home builder is out of business
Have you contacted the door manufacturer?
Why not just get a clamp one so much easier and serve the same purpose

to make room for oxygen.
Lotta condescending in this...
could u come over and do mine?
