World War 1 was triggered by a complex web of factors. The immediate cause was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist. This event led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia. The situation escalated as alliances came into play: Russia, France, and the United Kingdom supported Serbia, while Germany backed Austria-Hungary.
The mobilization of military forces and a series of declarations of war ensued. The interconnected system of alliances, militarism, nationalism, and imperialistic ambitions among European powers contributed to the widening conflict. The war officially began on July 28, 1914, with a cascade of nations getting involved, forming the basis for what later became known as World War 1.
Now Guys there may be question in your mind that what is Archduke?
Well, Archduke was a royal title used by the Habsburg monarchy, particularly in the Austrian Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was a member of the Habsburg family and held the title of Archduke. It denoted a rank higher than a duke within the Habsburg nobility.
Austria-Hungary was not composed of separate countries in the way we understand them today. Instead, it was a dual monarchy comprising two main parts: the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. These entities had a shared monarch, military, and foreign policy but maintained separate governments and parliaments. The territory of Austria-Hungary included regions that are now part of several modern-day countries. Some of these include:
    Austria
    Hungary
    Czech Republic
    Slovakia
    Slovenia
    Croatia
    Bosnia and Herzegovina
    Montenegro
    Serbia
    Romania
Italy (specifically South Tyrol and parts of the Adriatic coast)
In the war The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire) faced the Allies (France, Russia, United Kingdom, later joined by others including the United States).
The United States entered World War 1 on April 6, 1917. Several factors contributed to this decision:
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare: Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare, targeting both military and civilian ships. The sinking of the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania in 1915, which had American passengers aboard, had already strained relations.
Zimmermann Telegram: Intercepted in 1917, this secret German message to Mexico proposed a military alliance against the U.S. in exchange for territories. This revelation fueled anti-German sentiments and contributed to the U.S. decision to enter the war.
Economic Interests: The U.S. had economic ties with the Allied powers, and loans to these nations increased. A victory for the Central Powers could jeopardize these financial interests.
Cultural and Ethnic Ties: Many Americans had cultural and familial ties to the Allied nations, especially the British. This influenced public opinion in favor of supporting the Allies.
Wilson's Idealism: President Woodrow Wilson, initially re-elected in 1916 with the slogan "He kept us out of war," shifted his stance. He sought to make the world "safe for democracy" and saw U.S. involvement as a means to shape the post-war world through his principles outlined in the Fourteen Points.
In his war message to Congress on April 2, 1917, Wilson requested a declaration of war, stating that the world must be made safe for democracy. Congress approved the declaration on April 6, 1917, marking the official entry of the United States into World War 1.
The Western Front in World War I was a key theater of conflict between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. Stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss border, it featured trench warfare and intense battles. Notable battles include the Battle of the Somme, Battle of Verdun, and the Battle of Ypres. Stalemates and heavy casualties characterized the front until 1918 when the Allies gained the upper hand, leading to the Armistice on November 11, 1918.
The Eastern Front in World War I was characterized by conflict between the Central Powers, mainly Germany and Austria-Hungary, and the Allies, primarily Russia. Battles such as Tannenberg and the Brusilov Offensive played significant roles, and the front witnessed large-scale troop movements and harsh winter conditions. The Eastern Front's dynamics differed from the Western Front, with more fluid and less fortified lines. The Russian Revolution in 1917 eventually led to Russia's withdrawal from the war, altering the Eastern Front's course.
The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, formally ended World War I.
